*** ‘In 1832 the Hackney Coach Board was abolished and its<br />
licensing powers and management of the licence duties passed first<br />
to the Board of Stamps and then, in 1833, to the Board of Stamps<br />
and Taxes. Its regulatory powers passed entirely to a metropolitan<br />
magistrate nominated by the Secretary of State for Home Affairs.’<br />

7. Persian manuscript.- [hi s t o ry o f pe r s i A n ki n g s], manuscript<br />
in Farsi on paper, 160 ff.,written on versos only, 6 lines, a few<br />
pencil transcriptions, attractive 19th century red panelled morocco,<br />
gilt,little rubbed, presentation inscriptions and notes, inside covers,<br />
4to, ? Iran, mid to late 19th century. £350 - £450<br />
*** Apparently unpublished history of the kings of Persia, in a style<br />
of Farsi, consciously avoiding arabic influence, perhaps connected<br />
with court circles.<br />
Provenance: Inscribed inside front cover: ‘E.H. Minns from<br />
E.G.B., Christmas 1917’ E.G. Browne (1862-1926), eminent<br />
Persian scholar, author of a Literary History of Persia (1902-24)<br />
and Persia, aYear amongst the Persians (1893). Sir Ellis Hovell<br />
Minns (1874-1953), archaeologist and palaeographer, Sanders<br />
reader in bibliography, and first Disney Professor of Archaeology at<br />
Cambridge (inscription, and bookplate inside back cover). Inscribed<br />
to the eminent Orientalist Christopher Gandy on back free endpaper<br />
‘To Mr Gandy as a souvenir of our firm friendship. London May<br />
10th 1962 Ali Moshiri’, repeated in Farsi. Alis Moshiri, perhaps a<br />
member of the well-known family of singers from Iran.<br />
