pictorial wrappers, light creasing to spines, vol.2 spine faded,
lightly rubbed at extremities, still an excellent set overall, preserved
in custom drop-back boxes, 8vo, New York, Ace Books, 1965.

*** Following claims that Lord of the Rings was not protected in
the United States under American copyright law, Ace books decided
to press ahead with an unauthorised edition without paying any
royalties to Tolkien. After a grass roots campaign from Lord of the
Rings fans, Ace were forced to withdraw their edition and make a
nominal payment to Tolkien.

e d i t i o n, light browning to margins, spine very slightly yellowed,
light vertical crease to lower panel, a little rubbed at extremities,
otherwise excellent, 8vo, New York, Ballantine Books, 1965.

*** Along with the Ballantine edition of Lord of the Rings, the
cover art was executed by Barbara Remington who, as Tolkien later
learned to his dismay, had never read any of the books. After the
second printing Tolkien insisted on the removal of the lion.
