(p i r At e d) e d i t i o n, light browning to margins of endpapers, original<br />

pictorial wrappers, light creasing to spines, vol.2 spine faded,<br />

lightly rubbed at extremities, still an excellent set overall, preserved<br />

in custom drop-back boxes, 8vo, New York, Ace Books, 1965.<br />

*** Following claims that Lord of the Rings was not protected in<br />

the United States under American copyright law, Ace books decided<br />

to press ahead with an unauthorised edition without paying any<br />

royalties to Tolkien. After a grass roots campaign from Lord of the<br />

Rings fans, Ace were forced to withdraw their edition and make a<br />

nominal payment to Tolkien.<br />

e d i t i o n, light browning to margins, spine very slightly yellowed,<br />

light vertical crease to lower panel, a little rubbed at extremities,<br />

otherwise excellent, 8vo, New York, Ballantine Books, 1965.<br />

*** Along with the Ballantine edition of Lord of the Rings, the<br />

cover art was executed by Barbara Remington who, as Tolkien later<br />

learned to his dismay, had never read any of the books. After the<br />

second printing Tolkien insisted on the removal of the lion.<br />
