Culture and the arts retain their treasured significance within
Ceredigion, as befits the area containing Wales’s two oldest
universities, the location of the first national eisteddfod (held at
Cardigan in 1176); and the National Library of Wales.
Cardigan, which recently celebrated its 900th anniversary, has a thriving
arts scene with regular exhibitions, films, live theatre and music in the
excellent facilities at Theatr Mwldan. The statue of Our Lady of Cardigan -
the national shrine of the Roman Catholic Church in Wales, blessed by
Pope Benedict XVI during his visit to the UK in 2010, can be seen at
Cardigan’s Catholic church. Benedictine monastery remains and a water
mill at St Dogmaels also deserve a visit.
Inland from Aberaeron, Theatr Felinfach is a community theatre also
welcoming touring productions.
Aberystwyth’s range of galleries include those at the Ceredigion Museum,
the University’s School of Art, the National Library of Wales and the
Aberystwyth Arts Centre - the largest in Wales - also offering a 1,000 seat
concert hall, theatres and a cinema. The programme features
internationally-renowned artistes, orchestras and production companies.
Less formal concerts and performances are a regular feature of village life
with pubs and other venues playing host to local artists. Aberystwyth’s
Commodore Cinema also shows the latest films.
The National Library of Wales is considered as one of the World’s greatest
Libraries. Its priceless collections including books, manuscripts,
photographs, maps, drawings and film, make it one of the nation’s most
important repositories. Its collections include The Black Book of
Carmarthen, the original manuscript of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and
paintings by Turner, Gainsborough, and Kyffin Williams. Free
exhibitions are staged throughout the year.
The Library holds free weekly tours of the building for the public,
providing an opportunity to glimpse some of Wales’s national
treasures. A series of films, live performances and lectures are
also offered in the Library’s 100 seater ‘Drwm’ auditorium.
The Ceredigion Museum, housed in the Coliseum at Aberystwyth, a
restored Edwardian music hall, once described as “probably the most
beautiful museum in Britain” offers displays and objects to entertain,
educate and amuse all ages. The National Wool Museum, south of
the county, is also well worth a visit.

Mae gan y sir dair theatr yn cynnig adloniant o safon - yn sioeau, dramâu,
cyngherddau ac arddangosfeydd - trwy gydol y flwyddyn. Yn Aberteifi, mae
Theatr Mwldan yn ganolfan i’r celfyddydau gweledol ac i berfformiadau
byw gan brif gwmnïau teithiol Prydain ynghyd â chwmnïau amatur lleol.
Prif nodwedd Theatr Felinfach ger Aberaeron yw’r perfformiadau gan y
gymuned leol tra bod Aberystwyth yn cynnig cyfleusterau o’r radd flaenaf
yng Nghanolfan y Celfyddydau, y mwyaf o’i bath yng Nghymru gyda
neuadd gyngerdd, theatr a sinema a rhaglen lawn gan artistiaid clasurol a
chyfoes ynghyd â digwyddiadau o bwys ar y calendr celfyddydol.
Hefyd, fe ddewch ar draws artistiaid lleol yn perfformio’n rheolaidd i
gynulleidfaoedd yn nhafarndai a neuaddau pentref ar hyd a lled Ceredigion.
Ystyrir Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru yn un o Lyfrgelloedd mawr y byd. Mae
ei chasgliadau amrhisiadwy yn cynnwys llyfrau, llawysgrifau, ffotograffau,
mapiau, lluniau a ffilmiau, yn ei gwneud yn drysorfa’r genedl. Ymysg ei
chasgliadau mae Llyfr Du Caerfyrddin a’r Canterbury Tales, a lluniau gan
Turner a Kyffin Williams. Cynhelir arddangosfeydd amrywiol gydol y
flwyddyn.
Yn ogystal, cynhelir teithiau tywys wythnosol o’r adeilad -
cyfle i weld a rhyfeddu at rai o’n trysorau cenedlaethol.
Cynhelir rhaglen o ffilmiau, sgyrsiau a pherfformiadau
yn y ‘Drwm’, awditoriwm y Llyfrgell.
Os am flas o hanes a thraddodiadau’r sir dylid
ymweld ag Amgueddfa Ceredigion yn
Aberystwyth. Yno, yn hen theatr y Coliseum,
portreadir hanes y sir yn wych mewn
arddangosfeydd. Yn ne’r sir mae’n werth ymweld
â Castell Cilgerran ac Amgueddfa Wlân Cymru.
Yn Eglwys Llanbdarn Fawr ar gyrion Aberystwyth, cewch
arddangosfa sy’n adrodd ei hir hanes llenyddol. Yno y bu
Rhigyfarch yn croniclo bywyd Dewi Sant ac yno
cyfansoddwyd rhan o Frut y Tywysogion cyn ei
drosglwyddo i Abaty Ystrad Fflur yn 1175.
