Race 12 Selections by K.B.M. THE HORSEPLAYERS JOURNAL
2 MACHET ROCKET has thrown in back-to-back clunkers after coming up with a much-needed victory against easier foes in a road trip to Kawartha
Downs on Mar. 26. Trainer Murray Brethour watched the mare finish a non-factor seventh in her performance following up that victory, and things
got worse for her last time due to a break behind the starting gate. I’m going to give her one more chance to get her act together. Slight edge here.
4 HOLIDAY SHOPPER spotted the leaders too many lengths in her latest assignment and as a result she disappointed the backers that hammered
her down to the 5-2 favourite. The best she could do was rally for a small share for Team Brewer. She gets an improved post to work from tonight
as she returns to the same conditioned class. That factor alone should help her come up with an improved performance. Exactor factor in here.
6 SHADYS M THREE is a combined 1-for-29 over the last two seasons for trainer George Hunt, but I still think she has the ability to work her way
into the top three against this group. She rallied to finish fifth last week despite giving up a position in the late stages of the mile. She generally
doesn’t have much early speed, but she can often be counted on for a good late kick. She has the overall speed needed to be a factor tonight.
7 KEYSTONE JUBILEE used front-end tactics in each her last two outings, and in both instances the approach failed miserably. The Western
Hanover miss returns to the same level in her quest to find the winner’s circle for the second time this season and for the 24 th time in her career. I’d
be surprised to see her on the lead in here considering her lack of success in her last two attempts. She can play a minor role tonight.
THE FOLLOWING LISTED IN POST POSITION ORDER
(1) SAM SWIFTY turned in decent efforts in consecutive starts prior to last week’s disappointing ninth-place finish. The mare had a ground-saving
trip throughout that mile but she lacked any type of firepower in the late stages of the mile. She can bounce back and be a factor in here.
(3) BOAT HOUSE ROW makes her second start off the bench for trainer Rene Laarman, who watched the mare struggle to be a factor in last
week’s return race. She should benefit from that tightener, but I’m still not sold on the fact that she can be a major player in here.
(5) GRAND TOUR has really turned things around in her last two attempts for trainer Gary Kingshott. She erupted for a 47-1 upset two starts ago,
and she tagged along to be a solid runner-up at odds of 8-1 in her latest. She can’t be overlook in here based on her recent form.
(8) WHIPPEROSA has really gone through a rough patch for owner/trainer John Hooey. The mare has failed to bring home a cheque in her last six
attempts including last week’s sixth-place finish. She has another challenging post position to overcome. She’s hard to recommend in here.
(9) ABOVETHENORM finished a fast-closing third in her debut off-the-claim on Mar. 21, but she’s gone home empty handed in a trio of follow-up
attempts for trainer Paul Ruhl. The mare gets reclassified tonight, but she’s drawn an awkward post position. I’ll take a pass on her in here.
(10) XENIA HANOVER had some good fortune at Kawartha Downs back in the month of March, but she’s been overmatched in her last two local
outings. The mare has another terrible post position to deal with as she tries to regroup. I’ll take a pass on her in this spot.
