BUSINESS PROJECTEDFUTURE Futurists predict that travel in the next century may be as simple as a download away. Meet Jork. He’s a thirtysomething undergrad at the University of General Electric, Class of 2112, and he’s desperate to use his spring break to fl ee the frigid 112-below temperatures of New York. Problem is, he doesn’t have enough dough (literally, in the future unbaked bread will be currency) to aff ord a trip to the tropics. So, what does he do? In <strong>2012</strong>, he would have had to stay home and angrily click through vacation photos on his friend’s Facebook pages. But now, there are better options. “Today, travel means actually going some place. In the future travel will be about getting those sensations wired into your brain,” says Rohit Talwar, CEO of Fast Future, a professional travel industry futurist. Talwar says a common scenario in 100 years may involve a group of people choosing a single representative to travel for them. “That person will be wired to relay the experience to everyone who wants to live it,” he says. “Once you’ve downloaded an experience, you won’t be able to tell if you lived it or not.” It’s easy to be skeptical of claims made by people who call themselves futurists. After all, 100 years ago people as smart as Thomas Edison thought we’d have the technology today to turn iron into gold. They’re more scientist than psychic, even if their predictions sound like the ramblings of a deranged Jetsons writer. Take the seemingly outlandish claims of futurist Ken Harris, chairman of Marylandbased consultancy The Consilience Group, APRIL <strong>2012</strong> GO MAGAZINE PAGE 62 who says business travel in the future will involve fewer carry-ons and more holograms. “I think it’s less likely people will meet in person trip because of advances in electronic communication,” he says. “A virtual image of the person you’re meeting could be in the room with you.” Sounds spectacular, but will people really choose a fl oating hologram over a real-life interaction? Probably not. Advanced video conferencing technology exists today and suitand-tie-types still insist on getting together so they can look each other in the eye and physically shake hands. There’s something authentic about face-to-face interaction that virtual reality just can’t replicate. Talwar agrees, “Pressing the fl esh is the prime reason for business travel today. You just can’t have the same engagement without it.” The future can’t make a hologram that feels like a tropical sunbeam or a gentle Caribbean wave.
