In ‘n globale wêreld met ‘n ongeëwenaarde bevolkingsgroei
en die gepaardgaande behoefte aan voedsel, is landbou bestem
om groot prominensie in ons toekoms te geniet. Maar in
Suid-Afrika, het landbou meer rolle om te vervul as net die
verskaffer van gesonde en bekostigbare voedsel.
Landbou en grondgebruik is onlosmaaklik verweef. Hierdie feit
plaas landbou in die middel van Suid-Afrika se ingewikkelde
sosio-politiese geskiedenis en maak dit ‘n omstrede saak in ons
moderne politieke landskap. Landbou het dus ‘n sentrale rol om
te vervul in die toekomsbeplanning van ons jong demokratiese
nasie.
Landbou het die potensiaal om in Suid-Afrika en in ons
provinsie brûe te bou. Maar om brûe te kan bou en saam te
kan werk, is kommunikasie van die grootste belang. Die
Departement Landbou moedig dus werknemers aan om te
probeer om met hul kliënte in ‘n taal waarmee hulle gemaklik
is, te kommunikeer.
Ek sien hierdie drietalige woordeboek as ‘n allernoodsaaklike werkstuig in die hande van enige landboupraktisyn
in die Wes-Kaap. Ons moet taal, en die gepaardgaande kultuur, ook gebruik om nuwe verhoudinge te smee en
om bestaande verhoudinge te verstewig. Met taal kom daar begrip, en dan ook respek vir mekaar.
Ek glo hierdie woordeboek sal bydra tot die Provinsiale Regering se doelwit van ‘n oopgeleentheidsamelewing
vir almal. Ek bedank almal wat betrokke was met die saamstel van hierdie woordeboek, en vir die insig wat deur
die Wes-Kaapse Departement van Landbou getoon is om dit te publiseer.

In a global world faced with unprecedented population growth and the accompanying demand for food,
agriculture is set to become very prominent in our future. But in South Africa, agriculture has more roles to play
than only being the provider of healthy and affordable food.
Agriculture, and land usage is inextricable intertwined. This fact places agriculture in the middle of South
Africa’s complex socio-political history and makes it a controversial issue in our modern political landscape.
Agriculture therefore has a central role to play in shaping the future of our new democratic nation.
Agriculture has the potential to be a bridge building force in South Africa, but also in our Province. But in order
to build bridges and forge alliances, communication is of vital importance. The Department of Agriculture
therefore encourages employees to try and communicate with clients in a language they are comfortable with.
I see this trilingual agricultural dictionary as a fundamental tool in the hands of any agricultural practitioner
in the Western Cape. We must also use language, and the culture that comes with it, to forge new relationships
and strengthen existing ones. Together with language comes understanding, and then respect, for one another.
I belief this dictionary will contribute to the Provincial Government’s goal of creating an open opportunity
society for all. I want to thank everyone that has been involved with the compilation of this dictionary, and for
the insight shown by the Western Cape Department of Agriculture to let it see the light.
