REPORT OF THE DIRECTOR OF THE LABORATORY OF<br />
HYGIENE.<br />
The Laboratory <strong>of</strong> Hygiene was formally opened on February 22,<br />
18<strong>92</strong>, <strong>and</strong> a course in Elementary Bacteriology, covering three<br />
months, five days each week, from 9 to 12 A.M., was given, <strong>and</strong><br />
attended by five students, three <strong>of</strong> whom were graduates in medicine.<br />
A course <strong>of</strong> Lectures upon General Hygiene was given to the first<br />
class in the Medical Department, including one lecture a week throughout<br />
the academic year, a course <strong>of</strong> Lectures on Ventilation, House<br />
Drainage, etc., was given to the Class <strong>of</strong> Architects <strong>and</strong> Engineers,<br />
<strong>and</strong> a course <strong>of</strong> Six Lectures upon the Hygiene <strong>of</strong> Apartments occupied<br />
by the Sick was given to the Training School for Nurses in the<br />
<strong>University</strong> Hospital.<br />
Bacteriological examinations were made in seven cases in the <strong>University</strong><br />
Hospital, in several cases in the Church House for Children<br />
<strong>and</strong> in the Children's Hospital, <strong>and</strong> in a number <strong>of</strong> cases presented<br />
by physicians for positive diagnosis in suspected diphtheria, anthrax<br />
<strong>and</strong> hydrophobia.<br />
Inspection <strong>of</strong> premises, examination <strong>of</strong> water supply, plumbing,<br />
etc., were made in several cases, including an outbreak <strong>of</strong> typhoid in<br />
a large boarding sclool, <strong>and</strong> in a village, <strong>and</strong> advice given in each<br />
case.<br />
Examinations <strong>of</strong>, <strong>and</strong> experimental work upon, the milk <strong>and</strong> tissues<br />
from milch cows suspected <strong>of</strong> being infected with tuberculosis,<br />
experiments upon the value <strong>of</strong> certain disinfectants, bacteriological
