On Wednesday afternoon a garden party was given by the Lord<br />
Lieutenant <strong>and</strong> Countess <strong>of</strong> Zetl<strong>and</strong> at the Vice-Regal Lodge, -at which<br />
more than a thous<strong>and</strong> guests were present. On Wednesday evening<br />
the Tercentenary Banquet was given in the Leinster Hall. The<br />
chair was occupied by the Earl <strong>of</strong> Rosse, Chancellor <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>.<br />
At his right were His Excellency the Lord Lieutenant, the Lord<br />
Chancellor <strong>of</strong> Irel<strong>and</strong>, the Lord Primate, the Marquis <strong>of</strong> Londonderry,<br />
Lord Kelvin, Sir Frederick Leighton, the Rt. Hon. David<br />
Plunkett, <strong>and</strong> Dr. Ingram, F.T.D.C. On the left <strong>of</strong> the^Chairman were<br />
the Provost <strong>of</strong> Trinity College, Dublin; General Viscount Wolseley,<br />
the Lord Mayor <strong>of</strong> Dublin, the Lord Archbishop <strong>of</strong> Dublin, the Marquis<br />
<strong>of</strong> Dufferin <strong>and</strong> Ava, Pr<strong>of</strong>. Lannelongue, <strong>of</strong> Paris, the Bishop <strong>of</strong><br />
Derry, the Master <strong>of</strong> Trinity College, Cambridge, <strong>and</strong> Mr. Lecky.<br />
Among the toasts <strong>of</strong> the evening were : " The Universities," proposed<br />
by Dr. Ingram, to which the Bishop <strong>of</strong> Oxford <strong>and</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>. Lannelongue<br />
responded; "Trinity College, Dublin," proposed by the<br />
Master <strong>of</strong> Trinity College, to which the Provost <strong>and</strong> the Hon. David<br />
Plunkett <strong>and</strong> Mr. Lecky responded ; " Science, Literature <strong>and</strong> Art,"<br />
proposed by Lord Dufferin, to which Lord Kelvin responded on<br />
behalf <strong>of</strong> Science, the Bishop <strong>of</strong> Derry on that <strong>of</strong> Literature, <strong>and</strong> Sir<br />
Frederick Leighton on that <strong>of</strong> Art.<br />
•On Thursday, July 7, the guests <strong>and</strong> delegates, Faculty, Fellows<br />
<strong>and</strong> Caput <strong>of</strong> the. <strong>University</strong>, formed in the quadrangle <strong>and</strong> proceeded<br />
to the Leinster Hall, where the addresses <strong>of</strong> congratulation<br />
were presented to Trinity College, Dublin, by the visiting delegates<br />
on behalf <strong>of</strong> the universities <strong>and</strong> other learned bodies there represented.<br />
One representative <strong>of</strong> each country made a short speech,<br />
<strong>and</strong> in this capacity President Gilman, <strong>of</strong> the Johns Hopkins <strong>University</strong>,<br />
gracefully <strong>and</strong> suitably voiced the sentiments <strong>of</strong> America.<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Edmund J. James being unfortunately unable to appear, the<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania was represented by Pr<strong>of</strong>essor John Shaw<br />
Billings <strong>and</strong> Dr. Wm. Romaine Newbold. The congratulatory
