The number <strong>of</strong> graduates in 1889 was 128, in <strong>1890</strong>, 115, in 1891,<br />

135, <strong>and</strong> in 18<strong>92</strong>, 154. The total number <strong>of</strong> graduates up to the<br />

present time is 10,612. »<br />

The fourth year continues insignificant, as must be the case as long<br />

as it is voluntary. Fortunately this state <strong>of</strong> affairs can only last for a<br />

short time longer, since the compulsory four-year course goes into<br />

operation with the session 1893-94.<br />

Of the Freshman class for the session 1889-90, numbering 177, 55,<br />

or 31 per cent., were admitted on degrees in Arts or Science, in on<br />

certificates, <strong>and</strong> 11 on examination in Physics <strong>and</strong> English. Of the first<br />

year class <strong>of</strong> 1889-90, numbering 177 men, 55, or 31 percent., were<br />

admitted on degrees, 98 on certificates, <strong>and</strong> 24 after examination.<br />

Of the Freshman class for <strong>1890</strong>-91, numbering 211, 73, or 34^<br />

per cent., were admitted cm degrees, 91 on certificates <strong>and</strong> 40 after<br />

examination. Of the Freshman class <strong>of</strong> the session 18-91-<strong>92</strong>, numbering<br />

241, 46, or 11 percent., were.admitted on degrees, 164 on certificates,<br />

<strong>and</strong> 31 after examination.' Of the Freshmen class <strong>of</strong> the session<br />

18<strong>92</strong>-93, numbering 3n, 78, or 25.2 per cent., were admitted on<br />

degrees.<br />

I append a table showing how many <strong>of</strong> the first-year class held<br />

degrees in Arts or Science at date <strong>of</strong> admission in each <strong>of</strong> the last<br />

thirteen years, since the compulsory three-year course was established:<br />
