sons on whom that honor was usually conferred
were selected from the most learned
scholars of the colony, and no one had higher
claims to that distinction than the classic
pastor of Lynn, whose scholarship in Latin,
Greek, and especially in Hebrew, was thought
remarkable even before he left England. His
interest in popular education was strong. He
not only gave a college training to all his sons,
and classic instruction to his daughters, but
taught the catechism on Sundays at his house
to the youth of his parish, and gave gratuitous
tuition in the languages on week-days to all
the children of the town who desired to learn,
