form until, some thirty or forty years more or
less afterwitrds, its lofty steeple was taken
down and the building modernized. Mr.
Whiting was pastor of the church in Concord
from _712 to I738 , about twenty-six years,
when his connection with the old society was
dissolved.
For some time previously, irreconcilable
differences of opinion on ecclesiastical matters
had arisen among the people, and involved the
members of this as well as of other communi-
ties. Several societies were formed, outside of
the church, of those who dissented from the
doctrines held by the majority; and they
employed as their preachers other clergymen
whose services they could from time to time
obtain. Among these preachers, one was the
Rev. Israel Loring of Sudbury, who preached a
sermon (which was printed) 29 December, i737,
"at the request of lwo religious societies of
young men there," who used to "meet for the
exercises of religion on the evenings of the
Lord's day and at other times." The doc-
