on his voluminous correspondence, and in the
many nameless duties which fall to the lot of a
minister, a layman cannot easily imagine.
That he felt, at one period of his life, no lit-
tle anxiety for the future welfare of the colony,
is beyond a doubt; for in his biographical
sketch of Cotton, written in I653, after Crom-
well had fought through the battles of the Com-
monwealth, he says : " I end all with that of our
Saviour concerning John Baptist, 'He was a
burning and shining light;' and God grant the
