a century, has been established by the Constitu-
tion of the United States. Though his works
are less conspicuous upon the pages of history
than those of the leading magistrates of his
times, they were not less important to the
welfare of posterity. Of all the Christian
ministers who forsook their native country that
they might preserve freedom of conscience,
of all who devoted their lives to the service of
their heavenly Master, no one was more worthy
of our love and reverence than the venerable
pastor of Lynn. He was, in truth, as his contemporaries
said of him, " A man of God, and
an honorable man,"
