Despite of the rain, our annual Athletics Day was 

once again a highlight and the experience at the 

Bellville Velodrome was a huge success! Well 

done to all our first time participants in grade one. 

Thank you to all our parents for their support and 

the learners for their great enthusiasm and good 

behaviour. 

A special thanks to Ms Chantelle and the staff for 

making it such a successful event.

Curriculum 

At Curro, more and more stress is being 

placed on the subjects Science and 

Mathematics. Last year, one of our 

educators, Samantha Rottaro, managed to 

let our learners take part in the annual 

Science Expo. The learners also became 

more involved with experiments via the 

annual Mighty Minds days. We are proud to 

say that after our first participation, the 

following two learners received these 

results: 

Joanie Thom – received a silver medal 

Ewald Diedericks – received a bronze 

medal 

This is definitely something we will continue 

to encourage at Curro. 

In a previous CC we announced that we 

would give our Intermediate Phase parents 

more information about CAPS. 

We have since decided to give this 

information about the new curriculum at the 

information evenings which take place in the 

second week of 2013 as many new learners 

will be joining us next year and we would like 

to share the information with their parents as 

well. Our Intermediate Phase educators are 

still attending CAPS workshops and we are 

sure they will be up and ready for next year.

Primary School sports girl of the year 

We would like to congratulate Dantelle 

Joubert who has been nominated by the 

WP school sport organization for an 

outstanding individual chess player in 2012. 

Dantelle shows absolute dedication and 

commitment to this particular code of sport. 

Her ambition is to become a Woman Grand 

Master in this game. (You will read more 

about this further in the CC). We hold 

thumbs for you Dantelle. You make us 

proud. 

Coffee @ Curro 

The owners of our new coffee shop that 

opened this year (behind the rugby poles) is 

a place for parents to grab a quick bite to 

eat, coffee or hot chocolate on the go while 

they wait for their children to come out of 

school. 

The owners of the coffee shop plan to 

expand their business in the future by putting 

up the brand name of the shop, Coffee @ 

Curro. 

There are also a few convenient tables for 

parents to sit at. This was done by the PAC 

and we thank them.

Planx: “A world of creative fun.” 

Besides the obvious benefits like improving eye hand co-ordination 

and dexterity, planx also stimulates logical thinking and reasoning 

skills. On Tuesday 23 October the Grade Three Learners in 3E3 

rediscovered planx and had fun creating and inventing various 

structures from scratch. Amongst the favourites were a skeleton 

and a giant tower built with team 

work and co-operation. The tower 

almost reached the ceiling! We will 

definitely spend more time 

exploring and discovering the 

wonderful world of planx in the 

future. 

MIDDAGETES VIR ONS WERKERS 


Curro Durbanville se werkerskorps met Mnr Victor Lucas as terreinbestuurder, werk 

daagliks baie hard en toegewyd daaraan om die skoolgebou en terrein netjies en in stand 

te hou. Ons is voorwaar baie trots op elkeen van ons werkers. Die skool het onlangs ‘n 

nuwe projek geloods om waardering vir hulle op ‘n sigbare wyse te toon. Daar is begin 

om vir alle werkers smiddae tydens hulle etensuur, behoorlike en gebalanseerde maaltye 

te verskaf. Me Wilna van Niekerk, die nasorgspysenier hanteer ook die spyseniering 

van hierdie projek. Om die hele span van 17 werkers middae rondom ‘n behoorlik gedekte 

tafel saam te sien bid vir hul heerlike bord gekookte kos, bring voorwaar ‘n warm gevoel 

om die hart. 



Graad 4- uitstappie 

Die graad 4- leerders, het die laaste week 

net voor die langverwagte September 

vakansie, ’n interessante uitstappie na 

Woolworths en Spur gehad. 

Woensdagoggend is almal in rep en roer, 

reg vir die wonderlike dag wat voorlê. ’n 

Paar baie vriendelike mammas het 

aangebied om die leerders te help vervoer 

na Cape Gate inkopiesentrum. Ons het 

voor Woolworths se ingang ontmoet, ’n 

paar foto’s geneem en toe die oggend 

saam met Ryan en André, twee van 

Woolies se bestuurders, afgeskop. 

During the third term, we learnt about the 

different types of farming in our Geography 

lessons. We had an engaging morning at 

Woolworths, learning about food produce, 

food packaging and food storage. We 

watched an interesting video about rhinos, 

poultry farmers and caring for our 

environment. Woolworths has a very eco 

-friendly approach towards their products. 

We started the tour outside Woolworths, 

where the trucks drop-off fresh produce at 

two o’clock in the morning. The food is then 

stored in huge refrigerators before it is 

packed in the store. All Woolies food is 

kept at an ambient temperature to ensure 

maximum freshness and excellent quality. 

We also had a tour through the food 

market. Afterwards, the learners were 

divided into groups of three and given a 

budget of R200. They had to shop for 

healthy food, which means, no biscuits and 

chocolates.... some learners were mortified 

at this command! 

Nadat ons almal deur die kosafdeling 

is, het Ryan ons op ’n toer geneem 

deur die klere-, huis- en skoonheidsafdelings. 

Ons is gewys hoe die 

poppe aangetrek en verfraai word. 

Party kinders was heel geskok om te 

sien dat die lywe en arms van die 

poppe kan afdraai! Ons het die 

winkel van die een kant na die ander 

kant deurgedraf terwyl Ryan ’n paar 

interessanthede uitgewys het. By- 


voorbeeld, elke kledingstuk het ’n spesiale 

nommer sodat hulle altyd weet hoeveel 

items daar in die winkel is. (Sommige kere 

kan daar tot oor eenhonderdduisend items 

wees!) Ook, daar is ’n nuwe manspak, spesiaal 

vervaardig deur Woolies, wat in die 

wasmasjien gewas kan word en laastens, 

sommige van die swemklere vir klein kindertjies 

word gemaak van ’n unieke materiaal 

wat beskerming, teen die skadelike 

UV-strale van die son, bied. Ons het vinnig 

’n draai gemaak by die kliëntediensafdeling 

en daarna is ons na een van die groot 

stoorkamers, wat reg agter in die winkel is, 

geneem. Almal se monde het oopgehang 

omdat dié stoorkamer byna so groot soos 

ons skoolsaal is! Ryan het ons ook na die 

sekuriteitskamer vergesel waar ons vir 

onsself op die kameras kon loer. Net voor 

ons Spur toe is, is daar ’n verrassingspakkie 

aan elke leerder uitgedeel. Die sappie 

en die lekkertjie het goed afgegaan, want 

almal was doodhonger en baie dors. 

At about 12h00, we arrived at the Spur. 

What an incredible feeling to sit down and 

have some lunch! The learners were each 

given a burger and a drink. Afterwards, they 

were divided into groups of ten and taken 

through the kitchen. Here, the learners could 

see how food is prepared in a restaurant 

environment. They were also informed about 

the importance of hygiene. Everyone had to 

wear a hair net. We finished at about 13h30 

and were then taken back to school. This 

was an eventful and worthwhile morning for 

all. 




Grade 5 & 6 Eastern Cape Tour 

The introduction of an educational tour for 

our Grade 6 learners was met with great 

excitement and enthusiasm at the beginning 

of the year, as the learners of Curro had not 

had that opportunity before. As there’s a 

smaller group of Grade 6’s this year, a 

decision was made to invite the Grade 5’s 

along. 

On the 20 th of September 2012, a group of 

57 very excited learners, accompanied by 5 

dedicated educators left the school at 7am 

to set off on the first leg of the trip. The long 

bus drive went by quickly as everybody 

looked forward to a week of fun and 

learning. 

In Albertina we visited the Aloe Factory and 

continued the trip to Hartenbos, where they 

spent the afternoon at the Waterpark. The 

next morning started off with a wonderful 

experience of walking on the beach with a 

very knowledgeable sea-fairer, who 

introduced sea-life to the children in a very 

different way. After lunch we departed to 

Oudtshoorn, where we stayed at the Cango 

Mountain Resort for the next three nights. 

In Oudtshoorn the learners visited the 

famous Cango Caves, Wilgewandel, an 

adventure farm, the Wildlife Ranch, an 

ostridge farm, where they saw tigers, 

cheetah’s and crocodiles and they attended 

a show about the origin of Oudtshoorn. 

On day 5 we departed for Knysna where we 

enjoyed a trip on a ferry and visited the 

Elephant farm. The children enjoyed feeding 

the elephants and touching them. The next 

morning we returned to Hartenbos after 

visiting the Gardenroute Mall. The Diaz- and 

Shell museum was again a new experience 

and we ended a wonderful week with an 

enjoyable supper at a restaurant on the 

beach.

fantastic tops and t-shirts, respectively, 

made it easy to identify the group. We also 

wish to thank all parents who entrusted their 

children in our care. 

This tour would not have been possible 

without our fantastic teachers. A big 

shout-out to our teachers, Hilda, Beryl, 

Sonja, Rochelle and Jan who were 

teachers, doctors and parents for the week. 

To sum it up, this tour had been an amazing 

experience and a wonderful opportunity for 

every learner. This is what makes school 

special and another new tradition that had 

been started at Curro. 

Thank you teacher Rochelle for this wonderful 

initiative. 



Geletterdheidsdag 2012 

Omdat Taal so ‘n groot deel van ons leerders 

se opvoeding uitmaak, fokus Curro elke jaar 

op ‘n ander aspek daarvan. 


Hierdie jaar het ons die skrywer Fanie Viljoen 

(wat baie bekend vir sy kinderboeke is) genooi 

om van sy verhale met die leerders te kom 

deel. 

Dit was ‘n baie leersame en genotvolle 

oggend, waar die leerders dan ook vrae aan 

hom kon stel. Die leerders was so geїnspireer 

deur sy vertellings dat hulle baie van sy boeke by die uitstalling van Lapa Uitgewers, gekoop 

het. 

Curro het 10% van die verkope gekry en daarmee kon ons weer wonderlike nuwe boeke vir 

ons biblioteek aankoop. 

Die Gr. 1 – 3 leerders het in hul klasse elkeen ‘n eie klein storieboekie geskryf en geïlustreer en 

dit dan aan hulle maats voorgelees. 

In Gr.4 – 6 het die leerders in elke klas ‘n idioom gekry wat hulle dan as basis vir hulle stories 

kon gebruik. 

Op hierdie wyse wil ons dan ons leerders taalvaardigheid leer wat hulle kan bemagtig vir die 

toekoms. 

The Stage Performing Arts School & Theatre 

The Stage Performing Arts School & Theatre held their annual Feather Boa talent search 

competition in September. 

The Feather Boa Talent Search started in 2009 where their main goal was to uplift young and 

upcoming talent. This year The Stage was hosting its 4th annual Feather Boa Talent Search! 

The different categories are Drama, Vocals, Dance & Musical Theatre.

Atletieknuus 


Na twee weke se volstoom atletiekoefening en voorbereiding met die sang, het die atlete al 

die vrugte van hulle harde werk gepluk! 

Op Donderdag, 25 Oktober en Vrydag, 26 Oktober, het ons jaarlikse kleureatletiekbyeenkoms 

plaasgevind. Ons was baie trots op ons leerders se puik deelname, 

mooi gedrag en deursettingsvermoë, veral toe daar ‘n reënbui Vrydagoggend uitsak! Ons 

kranige atlete het hulle ook nie deur die weer laat afsit nie, want daar het selfs in die reën 

rekords gespat! 

Vrydagoggend het vreeslik opwindend begin met die dirigente se aankoms. Die Witspan 

se tema was “Grease Lightning” en die Bloues, “Surf Up”. Die Witspan is aangery in 

motorfietse met die gewilde liedjie, “Grease Lightning”, in die agtergrond. Die meisies het 

pragtig gelyk met hul pienk baadjies en opgemaakte hare. Die Blouspan het ons almal lus 

gemaak vir die strand met hulle temaliedjie, “Surfing USA”. Baie dankie aan al die 

dirigente wat so oulik gedans het en hul onderskeie spanne aangespoor het.

Ons het hierdie jaar besluit om ‘n trofee aan die beste o/12 baanatleet te oorhandig. Baie 

geluk aan Kelly Zeng wat skitterende resultate in haar baanitems behaal het en dan ook 

die bogenoemde trofee verower het. Geluk ook aan Corné Mocke met sy 2de plek behaal 

in die 70m hekkies vir seuns o/11. 

Aan die einde van die byeenkoms het die Witspan die atletiekbeker gewen, terwyl die 

Blouspan met die sangbeker weggestap het! Hulle het uitstekende gees op die pawiljoen 

getoon. Baie geluk aan al die Blouspan-leerders! 

We would like to thank all our parents for their support on this day and for the great fun in 

all the relay events. This was definitely a highlight of the day! Thank you to all the parents 

who assisted us as officials on both days. We sincerely appreciate your hard work and 

dedication! Also thank you to our parents who helped at the refreshment stalls. Your contribution 

was greatly appreciated. Without your help the athletics day would not have been 

such a success. We would also like to thank Mr. Bennit for his time and effort for taking our 

snap shots at the finish line, it is much appreciated.

MUSIEKNUUS… MUSIC NEWS…MUSIEKNUUS…MUSIC NEWS… 

Konserte 

Die afgelope 3 weke het al die musiekleerders ‘n beurt gekry om by ‘n konsert op te 

tree. Op 25 Oktober het ons ‘n baie suksesvolle Prestige Musiekkonsert gehou waar 

al ons Eisteddfod en UNISA presteerders deelgeneem het. Die Junior en Senior Kore 

het ook opgetree. Ons het hierdie jaar ‘n aantal klaskonserte gehou om aan almal die 

geleentheid te bied om op te tree. Op 17 en 18 Oktober het die Ligte Musiekafdeling 

by Jam Rock konsert gehou en op 2 November het die Klassieke Afdeling twee 

konserte in die skoolsaal gehou. 

Choirs 

The Senior Choir achieved an A++ (87% - 89%) at the Kaapse Afrikaanse Eisteddfod. 

Congratulations to every choir member! The Junior Choir is working hard preparing 

for the Christmas Concert on 1 December at the Willowbridge Shopping Centre. 

Cleo Worship was chosen for the Tygerberg Children’s Choir. Congratulations on this 

excellent achievement, Cleo!

Mr Pieter van Zyl is on leave for 4 weeks. He was selected to play in the musical, The

This year has flown by and I can’t believe that it is the Fourth Term already. 

Thank you to all our learners for attending the practices and we encourage them 

to continue to do so. As the weather is becoming warmer, we encourage all 

learners to use sunblock and wear a cap for sport practices and matches. 

We would like to congratulate the following teams and learners for their

School Organisation Awards 

Ceremony, which was held at the 

Ritz Hotel on Saturday the 27 

October. Dantelle Joubert, (right) 

was named Sports Girl of the year. 

She is selected as a member of the 

S.A team who will be competing in 

the Commonwealth Games in 

November. She has also been 

given the title of Woman’s 

Candidate Master after only playing 

chess for two years. 

Marno Stander (left) was named Sports Boy of the Year. He was chosen to be 

part of the S.A. tennis team who competed in Malaysia. He also has the top 

SATA ranking position in S.A. and participated in the tournament in Italy and 

Europe. We are extremely proud of these two learners.

Tennis 

Horse Riding 

From 9 – 11 August 2012 the Regional 

Championships for SANESA (South African National 

Equestrian Schools Association) was held at a wet, 

cold and very muddy George Riding Club. 42 riders 

from schools across the Western Province took part 

against riders from Boland and SWD. 


Corné Mocke and Hannah Gardiner were chosen to 

represent Curro Durbanville Primary. Hannah 

unfortunately couldn’t go because her horse was not 

injected in time. Corné took part in 50cm 

showjumping. He was placed 1 st and 2 nd in the two classes he participated in. At the end of 

the weekend Corné was chosen to represent the Western Cape at the National 

Championships. 

From 21 – 24 September 2012 the National Championships was held at Kyalami 

Equestrian Park. 20 riders from Western Province were in the of Western Cape team. 

Corné took part in 50cm showjumping. In the 1 st class he came 9 th out of 54 riders and in 

the 2 nd class 9 th out of 52 riders. In the 1 st class the WP A-team came 3 rd out of 14 

provincial teams. In the 2 nd class the WP A-team came 1 st out of 14 provincial teams!!! 

It was a proud moment as every time Corné was introduced as Corné Mocke from Curro 

Durbanville Primary.

walking in on “The wish” and receiving their diplomas. What an emotional event for mums, 

dads and the reception phase educators.

and Christmas lights! Our grade R’s were the stars of the night! Hippy hippy shake shake, 

under the sea we go. The graduating grade R’s are going with the flow.
