We are already at the end of a successful first term 

for 2012. We thank all our teachers for their initiative 

and hard work during the Interschools, Parent-child 

evenings and Fun Fanatics. It was a huge success 

and the feedback from our parents and children was 

very positive. We also would like to thank all the 

parents for their support. 

We are proud of our many sport achievements this 

term. Congratulations to all our learners receiving 

their WP Colours. 

On the 21 st on March our school will be participating 

in a seven a side tournament for netball and rugby in 

Langebaan. We are all extremely excited about this 

historical Curro Holdings sporting event.

Kinders geneig is om oorgewig te wees, wat kan 

bydra tot bewegingsagterstande. 

Ons personeel het onlangs ‘n volledige opleidingsessie 

gehad in hierdie Kinetika program, KDA, wat nou 

in Curro in graad 1 – 3 tydens Lewensvaardigheid 

(LO) geïmplimenteer word. Ons is baie opgewonde 

oor hierdie fantastiese program wat voorsiening maak 

vir onder andere: 

Fisiese ontwikkeling 

Motoriese ontwikkeling 

Sensoriese ontwikkeling 

Perseptuele ontwikkeling 

Alle lesse is noukeurig uitgewerk met bogenoemde 

aspekte wat in elke les aangeraak word. Ons glo dat 

ons die vrugte gaan pluk van hierdie KDA-program 

wat Curro aangekoop het. Die lesse is van so ‘n aard 

dat ons dit gedurende die wintermaande in die 

konferensiesentrum ook kan aanbied. 

We would also like to wish Miss Chantelle 

Terblanche all the best for her wedding day, on the 

31 st of March. 

On a sad note, we would like to give our condolences 

to the Lotz family who lost a father, and to the family of 

Nadine Wessels. Nadine was one of our High School 

colleagues, whom we sadly lost. 

Thanks once again for your support and for always

The importance of play in early childhood 

development: Grade RR and R 

With the introduction of a formal programme and 

assessment for Grade R, came a tendency to reduce 

playtime and to increase organised academic learning. 

What at first glance, appears to be a positive step, is in 

fact detrimental to healthy child development. 

Parents must be careful not to raise children in an 

increasingly hurried and pressured lifestyle with not 

enough play. Play is a building block of a child’s 

intellectual and social skills and helps get a child ready 

for more formalised learning. 

We encourage parents not to overload children with 

activities especially in Grade RR to 1. Children at this 

age should still get enough playtime. A Grade 1 

learner should not do more than 3 extra activities per 

week. A Grade R learner not more than 2 - 3 and a 

Grade RR learner not more than 2. This includes 

playball, karate, ballet, tennis, cricket, rugby, hockey, 

other private sport, Jui-Juitsu, audioblox, Music 

Appreciation and ‘soetlief’. One sport and one other 

activity is more than enough at this young age. The 

daily programme is already very stimulating and 

could be tiring as well.

Oueraande 

Ek doen ‘n vriendelike beroep op al ons 

ouers om hierdie belangrike oueraande by te 

woon om u kind se vordering met die 

opvoeder te kom bespreek. Daar is net 3 

oueraande in die jaar vir vorderingsverslag- 

bespreking. 

Afwesighede 

Leerders wat op gereelde basis afwesig is, is 

‘n bekommernis. Dit is belangrik om te besef 

dat daar deurentyd voorbereide en 

onvoorbereide assesseringstake in die klas 

gedoen word. Indien ‘n leerder dit mis weens 

afwesigheid, kan dit die leerders se punte, 

sleg beïnvloed. Ouers moet asseblief vir ons 

hiermee ondersteun. 

Opedag, 25 Februarie 

March 2012 

Op Saterdag, 25 Februarie het ons ‘n opedag 

gehad vir 2013 se inskrywings. Dit is die 

eerste keer dat ons dit op die wyse gedoen 

het. Die hoofrede daarvoor is dat onderhoude 

tydens die skooldag baie tydrowend is en dus 

baie tyd van opvoeders in beslag neem wat 

vele nasienwerk en voorbereiding het om te 

doen. Ons glo by Curro daaraan om met elke 

nuwe inskrywing ‘n individuele onderhoud te 

voer, en kon dit suksesvol by die Opedag 

doen. 

We were overwhelmed by the interest of more 

than a hundred prospective parents as they 

were taken on a tour through the school, 

followed by an interview. 

After many enquiries it was decided to open a 

second Play School class at the start of the 

second term in the “Koopmans” building. 

There are still a few places open. Anyone 

interested can contact the primary school 

secretary.

Wêreldbiddag vir Vroue 

Elke jaar, op die eerste Vrydag van Maart, bid vroue van oor die wêreld saam. Jaarliks kry 

‘n ander land se vroue die geleentheid om die program op te stel. Hierdie jaar was dit die 

vroue van Maleisië. Ons Curro-vroue, onder die bekwame leiding van juf. Rochelle, was 

deel van hierdie biddende wêreld. Dankie aan tannie Therené wat vir ons ‘n inspirerende 

boodskap kom gee het oor REGVERDIGHEID. Van die graad 6-dogters het ‘n toneeltjie 

opgevoer om die begrip regverdigheid te verduidelik. Die dogters en die juffrouens het 

kruise gemaak en dit uitgeruil as simbool dat ons Jesus se liefde moet versprei. 

Ons wil graag dankie sê 

aan Juffrou Jeanette wat 

on so mooi uitgehelp het in 

die graad R Afrikaanse 

klas.

Curro se Kunsskool kry ‘n Hupstoot 

Toe die graad 3’s ook belangstel in 

kunslesse, het die Curro Kunsklub uit sy 

nate gebars. Daar word toe vinnig en 

indringend gekyk na die geskikste persoon 

om die kreatiwiteit en standaard van 

Juffrou Ant verder uit te bou ... en wie nou 

beter as Juffrou Zee, die tweelingsus 

van Jufrou Ant. 

Hul het tog immers saam grootgeword, 

gestudeer en ander dinge saam gedoen, 

maar nog nooit saam as kollegas by 

dieselfde skool Kuns gegee nie. 

“This is a first,” says Teacher Ant excitedly. 

“I am not the only ‘right brainer’ here 

anymore and together, we shall make 

Curro proud.” 

Die monde het behoorlik oopgehang toe 

leerder en kollega die twee identiese 

kunsjuffies bymekaar sien. Hulle lyk nie net 

soos twee eenderse druppels water nie, 

maar klink dieselfde, dra soortgelyke klere, 

en is bowenal die een net so skeppend 

soos die ander. “Seer sekerlik ‘ge-clone’,” 

het ‘n leerder opgemerk. 

Teacher Zee (Zaresa Poultney) has recently

Valentynsdag = LIEFDE en by Curro het 

ons weereens liefde uitgestraal. Almal 

was getooi in hulle mooiste rooi, pienk en 

wit uitrustings. Die leerders kon nie wag om 

hulle briefies in die “LOVE BOXES” te pos 

nie en baie geheime bewonderaars het 

hulle liefdesver-klarings op skrif gestel.... 

Op hierdie dag het ons ook baie gefokus 

op hoe ons vir mekaar kan omgee en liefde 

teenoor mekaar kan betoon – dit vorm deel 

van ons karakterbouprogram.

Van Riebeeck Primary School and was 

contemplating an art leap year (pardon the 

pun) when she was requested by Curro to 

rather join forces at the fast growing Curro 

Art Club. 

“Grade 3 art learners are really my forte,” 

she said. “It is the right age for learners to 

explore their own creativity without actually 

realising it. They have little, or no inhibitions, 

and portray their images as they see, feel or 

experience it. It is fun and certainly very 

interesting at the Art Club.” 

The art classrooms at Curro Durbanville 

Primary have now become ‘destination 

stops’ for visitors as here they can 

experience the happy creative atmosphere 

amidst colourful projects and smiling faces.

What teachers really want to tell parents

Ron Clark is an award-winning teacher who started his 

own academy in Atlanta. He wants parents to trust 

teachers and their advice about their students. Clark 

says some teachers hand out A grades so parents won’t 

bother them. It’s OK for kids to get in trouble sometimes; 

it teaches life lessons, Clark says.

Extraordinary Solutions for Parents and Teachers,’ has 

been named “American Teacher of the Year” by Disney 

and was Oprah Winfrey’s pick as her “Phenomenal 

Man”. He founded The Ron Clark Academy, which 

educators from around the world have visited to learn. 

(CNN) – This summer, I met a principal who was 

recently named as the administrator of the year in her 

state. She was loved and adored by all, but she told me 

she was leaving the profession. I screamed, “You can’t 

leave us” and she quite bluntly replied’ “Look, if I get an 

offer to lead a school system of orphans, I will be all over 

it, but I just can’t deal with parents anymore; they are 

killing us.” 

Unfortunately, this sentiment seems to be becoming 

more and more prevalent. Today, new teachers remain 

in our profession an average of just 4.5 years, and many 

of them list “issues with parents” as one of their reasons 

for throwing in the towel. Word is spreading, and the 

more negativity the teachers receive from parents, the 

harder it becomes to recruit the best and the brightest 

out of colleges. So what can we do to stem the tide? 

What do teachers really need parents to understand? 

For starters, we are educators, not nannies. We are 

educated professionals who work with kids everyday and 

often see your child in a different light than you do. If we 

give you advice, don’t fight it. Take it, and digest it in the 

same way you would consider advice from a doctor or 

lawyer. I have become used to some parents who just 

don’t want to hear anything negative about their child, 

but sometimes if you’re willing to take early warning 

advice to heart, it can help you head off an issue that 

could become much greater in the future. Trust us. At 

times when I tell parents that their child has been a 

behavior problem, I can almost see the hairs raise on 

their backs. They are ready to fight and defend their 

child, and it is exhausting. One of my biggest pet 

peeves is when I tell a mom something her son did and 

she turns, looks at him and asks, “Is that true?” Well of 

course it’s true. I just told you. And please don’t ask 

whether a classmate can confirm what happened or 

whether another teacher might have been present. It 

only demeans teachers and weakens the partnership 

between teacher and parent. 

Please quit with all the excuses. 

Some parents will make excuses regardless of the 

situation, and they are raising children who will grow into 

adults who turn toward excuses and do not create a 

strong work ethic. If you don’t want your child to end up 

25 and jobless, sitting on your couch eating potato chips, 

then stop making excuses for why they aren’t 

succeeding. Instead, focus on finding solutions. 

Parents, be a partner instead of a prosecutor. 

And parents, you know, it’s OK for your child to get in

trouble sometimes. It builds character and teachers life 

lessons. As teachers, we are vexed by those parents 

who stand in the way of those lessons; we call them 

helicopter parents because they want to swoop in and 

save their child every time something goes wrong. If we 

give a child 79% on a project, then that is what the child 

deserves. Don’t set up a time to meet with me to 

negotiate extra credit for an 80%. It is 79%, regardless of 

whether you think is should be a B+. 

This may be hard to accept, but you shouldn’t assume 

that because your child makes straight A’s that he/she is 

getting good education. 

Please, take a step back and get a good look at the 

landscape. Before you challenge those low grades you 

feel this teacher has “given” your child, you might need to 

realize your child “earned” those grades and that the 

teacher you are complaining about is actually the one 

that is providing the best education. And please, be a 

partner instead of a prosecutor.

I feel so sorry for administrators and teachers these days 

whose hands are completely tied. In many ways, we live 

in fear of what will happen next. We walk on eggshells in 

a watered-down education system where teachers lack 

the courage to be honest and speak their minds. If they 

make a slight mistake, it can become a major disaster. 

My mom just told me a child at a local school wrote on 

his face with a permanent marker. The teacher tried to 

get it off with a wash cloth, and it left a red mark on the 

side of his face. The parent called the media, and the 

teacher lost her job. My mom, my very own mother, said, 

“Can you believe that woman did that?” I felt hit in the 

gut. I honestly would have probably tried to get the mark 

off as well. To think that we might lose our jobs over 

something so minor is scary. Why would anyone want to 

enter our profession? If our teachers continue to feel 

threatened and scared, you will rob our schools of our 

best and handcuff our efforts to recruit tomorrow’s 

outstanding educators. 

Finally, deal with negative situations in a professional 

manner. If your child said something happened in the 

classroom that concerns you, ask to meet with the 

teacher and approach the situation by saying, “I wanted 

to let you know something my child said took place in 

your class, because I know children can exaggerate and 

that there are always two sides to every story. I was 

hoping you could shed some light for me.” If you aren’t 

happy with the result, then take your concerns to the 

principal, but above all else, never talk negatively about a 

teacher in front of your child. If he knows you don’t 

respect her, he won’t either, and that will lead to a whole 

host of new problems. 

We know you love your children. We love them, too. We 

just ask – and beg of you – to trust us, support us and 

work with the system, not against it. We need you to 

have our backs, and we need you to give us the respect 

we deserve. Lift us up and make us feel appreciated, 

and we will work even harder to give your child the best 

education possible. 

That’s a teacher’s promise, from me to you.

Koekverkoping 

Baie dankie aan ons musiekouers vir julle wonderlike ondersteuning met ons 

Valentynskoekverkoping. Dankie vir die spesiale moeite met die verpakking en 

versiering van die gebakte koekies – die musiekouers is beslis bobaas bakkers en 

nog baie kunstig ook! ‘n Rekordbedrag van R12 140 is ingesamel. Die fondse word 

aangewend tot voordeel van die Musiekdepartement en die musiekleerders. Verlede 

jaar het ons o.a. ‘n baie goeie CD-speler aangekoop wat opnames kan maak en 

CD’s kan sny. Ons het ook tafeldoeke laat maak vir ons musiekkonserte. 

UNISA ererol 

UNISA het pas hul lys bekend gemaak van 

leerders wat vanjaar op die ererol verskyn. Curro 

het 7 leerders op die ererol! Baie geluk aan die 

volgende laerskool musiekleerders:

Musiekpersoneel 

Mnr Pieter van Zyl het op Sondag, 4 Maart ‘n uitvoering saam met die tjellis, JP 

Malan gegee in die St Andrews-kerk. Hulle het ‘n staande ovasie ontvang vir hulle 

ongelooflike spel. Die musiekpersoneel, en van die musiekleerders, was bevoorreg 

om die konsert by te woon. Ons was so trots op Mnr Pieter! Hy vertolk ook op die 

oomblik die rol van Henry in die radiovervolgverhaal, Seisoene. 

Juffrou Jeanne Maritz het weereens ‘n Merietesertifikaat van UNISA ontvang vir uitstaande 

onderrig in musiekteorie. Die gemiddeld van haar Top 10 leerders was 

89%! Ons is trots op ons haar! 

Juffrou Myrtle Visser het verlede naweek ‘n sangkursus aangebied vir sangers wat 

agtergrondstemme vir kunstenaars doen. 

Juffrou Marelize Zeeman (vioolonderwyseres), is lid van JAM Inc., wat 2e gekom het 

in die Battle of the Bands kompetisie. Hulle gaan ook by die Olyffees en KKNK 

optree en die voorprogram vir Prime Circle se konsert later vanjaar doen. 

Choirs 

The choirs are still working hard preparing for the Eisteddfod in May. Parents must 

please make sure that choir members have the correct choir uniform. Remember to 

keep the 4th of May (Senior Choir) and the 5th of May (Junior Choir) open for the 

last choir camp before the Eisteddfod! 



Graad 5 uitstappie na Spier 

Woensdag 22 Februarie was daar groot 

opgewondenheid onder die graad 5-leerders. Dit was 

tyd om Spier toe te gaan!

Ons het eerste na die swart arend gekyk. Een van sy 

kloue is so sterk soos die kake van 'n jagluiperd. Ons 

het geleer dat donkerte voëls kalmeer en dat die 

vinnigste dier op aarde 'n swerfvalk is. 

Ons kon aan uiltjies vat en oor hul ruggies streel. Die 

meisies het musiek gespeel op hul Blackberry selfone 

sodat die uiltjies kon dans. 

Ons het ook meer geleer van die jagluiperd en kon na hulle kyk. Ongelukkig was hulle te 

onrustig en ons kon hulle nie vryf nie. 

Dit was 'n dag vol interessante feite en groot pret!

Fun Fanatics Grade RR en R 

Op Vrydag 9 Maart 2012 was menige leerdertjies , ouers en opvoeders in rep en roer om 

alles in gereedheid te kry vir hierdie lekker dag op die rugbyveld. 

Die 10 klasse was in 5 lande ingedeel wat almal aan `n pragtige optog deelgeneem het. 

Heel voor was dit die graad RR maatjies wat Amerika en Engeland voorgestel het. 

Die graad R leerders het onderskeidelik Japan, Hawaii, en Suid-Afrika voorgestel en almal 

was pragtig met baniere , vlae en toepaslike T- hempies getooi. 

Elke groepie het die geleentheid gekry om hulself voor te stel d.m.v. sang, dans en versies 

sê. Dit was so oulik en die leerders het werklik gewys waartoe hul instaat was. 

Daarna was dit ernstige sake toe die 50m naellope begin. Hierdie “olimpiese” atlete was 

oorgehaal en het soos die wind gehardloop. Die ouers het ook beïndruk en `n paar rekords 

is opgestel !!! Jammer vir die paar wat gestruikel het.

Ons ouer-kindaande op 1 en 7 Maart was nog ‘n daadwerklike poging om families 

saam te snoer en van Curro se kant of die essensie van gesonde familiebande te 

onderstreep. 

Ons Gr 1-3 leerders en hulle ouers het groot pret gehad toe hulle, tydens ‘n 

inter-aktiewe tromsessie, die top 10 lewenslesse vir kinders prakties kon ontdek en 

ervaar. Hierdie tromsessie is aangebied deur DRUMKIDZ en die baie entoesiastiese 

en energieke Andy Byskup. 

Andy Byskup, the owner of Drumkidz, sent this message afterwards: 

“I had an absolutely awesome time drumming at your school last night and I hope 

you all had as much fun as I did. I was touched by the incredible amount of time, 

effort and work you and your school put into making this the most memorable 

experience for everyone there. I am very proud and privileged to be a part of it.” 

The Gr 4- 6 learners and parents had a wonderful evening too, with the well-known 

motivational speaker, Elsabé Aldrich. Her topic, “to be cool, is to be SPOT ON” 

was absolutely ‘spot on’ and relevant for the audience. She had the audience in the 

palm of her hands with her subtle and humorous way of reaching everyone.

Ons atlete het ‘n bedrywige seisoen agter die rug! Na die Mikro Atletiekbyeenkoms 

(2 Februarie) en die Fanie Theron Atletiekbyeenkoms (9 Februarie), het ons junior-atlete 

gaan deelneem aan die Aristea Grondslagfase byeenkoms. Hulle het hulle egter baie goed 

van hul taak gekwyt en die volgende pragtige prestasies is behaal:

Daniel Adekayode came first in the 80m and 100m (boys u/11) and Dean Rautenbach 

came 2 nd in the Long Jump (boys u/10.) What an outstanding achievement!!! 

At the Western Province Athletics Meeting (3 March), Dean Rautenbach came 4 th in the 

Long Jump and Daniel Adekayode again came first in the 80m and 100m. 

We are extremely proud of these athletes. Well done for holding Curro’s name so high! 

Daniel Adekayode made it through to the Western Cape Championships that was held in 

Oudshoorn on the 10 th of March. He came 1st in the 80m and received a gold medal. In 

the 100m, he came 3rd and received a bronze medal.

ATLETIEKNUUS: INTERSKOLE 

March 2012 

29 Februarie was ‘n onvergeetlike ervaring vir elke graad 4 tot 6 leerder en ons graad 3 

atlete. Dit is die eerste keer wat ons deelgeneem het aan die Interskole byeenkoms wat 

deur Melkbos Private Skool gereël was. Dit is ‘n dag wat ons nie gou sal vergeet nie. 

Na ure se harde oefening, wat ‘n spanpoging tussen personeel en leerders was, het ons 

uiteindelik die vrugte daarvan gepluk. Curro Durbies het hulle nie net skitterend van hul 

taak gekwyt op die atletiekbaan nie, maar op die pawiljoen het die gees behoorlik gekook! 

Juffrou Hilda en Juffrou Myrtle het seker gemaak daarvan dat die leerders absoluut 

uitgeblink het op die pawiljoen met die “flashes” en oorspronklike liedjies. 

In dieselfde asem ‘n groot dankie aan juffrou Deswin, juffrou Sheree en juffrou Nicole wat 

gehelp het met die afrigting van die dirigente! Baie dankie vir die dirigente wat pragtig 

gelyk het en gesorg het vir goeie gees op die pawiljoen. Hierdie aansporing vanaf die 

pawiljoen het elke Curro-atleet aangemoedig. 

Die atlete het uitstekend gevaar in die baan- en velditems – om nie eens te praat van al die 

rekords wat al vroegoggend gespat het nie. Baie geluk aan elke atleet wat Curro se naam 

hoog gehou het! Baie dankie aan Juffrou Chantelle en haar afrigterspan wat gehelp het 

met die voorbereiding van die atlete – ons atlete het verseker uitgestaan bo die res en ons 

is baie trots op hulle prestasies

SUN CITY TENNIS TOERNOOI 

March 2012 

Curro Durbanville se O/11- en 0/13-seuns tennisspanne het in Februarie deelgeneem aan 

die Skole Uitdaag Toernooi in Sun City. 

Die kompetisie was baie sterk. Uit die top privaatskole wat genooi was, het die O/11 seuns 

3de geëindig. Curro se spelers was Janco Bekker, Niel van der Wetshuizen, Rian 

Lombard, Nico Louw en Daniel Kilian. Ons het ‘n baie jong, onervare spannetjie gehad, 

maar hulle het hulle goed van hulle taak gekwyt. Almal het 

dit verskriklik geniet en baie geleer. Ons hoop om volgende 

jaar die beker te wen! 

Die 0/13-span het ook deelgeneem in Sun City. Ongeag 

baie beserings en siekte kon ons nog steeds kompiteer 

met van die land se top skole. Die spanne wat 

deelgeneem het was Laerskool Eikestad (Stellenbosch) 

Laerskool Stellenbosch, Beaumont, De Hoop, King David 

Primary, St Benedicts, Fairlands, Boys High en Menlo 

Park Laerskool. Ons het 4de geindig in ons groep en 

moes teen Beaumont uitspeel vir 7de of 8ste plek. 

Curro eindig 7de na ‘n goeie oorwinning teen dié 

Somerset-Wes skool. Ons hoop om volgende jaar met 

‘n gesonde span deel te neem en om in die top 3 te eindig!

Curro registered 26 learners, of which 3 received medals. 

U/8 – Natasha Joubert – Gold and first girl 

U/10 – Nadine Visser – First girl 

U14 – Dantelle Joubert – Silver and first girl 

Dantelle Joubert also entered the following tournaments and achieved 

the following: 

Won top lady, a silver medal and received R1000 at the Parel Valley Tournament 

Won a silver medal and R100 cash as well as a gold medal for top girl at the 

Welgemoed Chess Challenge. 

Congratulations to all these outstanding results!!!
