26284. Small vase with ornamentation in relief. — Heiglit o m. oG cent.<br />

(pi. XXII ).<br />

Shape : See iliuslration; rude spout projecling from body (cf. n" 82880, pi. XXII);<br />

handie lias been round; moulb closed up inside a litlle below rlm and four holes<br />

pierced in the partition.<br />

CoLouR : Red day with whilish slip on which are remains of yellow paint and gold<br />

particles.<br />

Ornamentatiois : Divided liorizonlally by broad plain band from whicb spout projects<br />

and which passes through handie; sliglit fluting inside rim; narrow ridge round<br />

neck; below, raised band wilh stippled surface (wreath?); below, egg and dart<br />

moulding; round lower part of body a calyx of large broad-topped petals fiUed<br />

with scale pattern; space between each at top filled by sharp-pointed leaf; back<br />

of handie ribbed.<br />

Technique : Moulded in two parts, as indicated by the horizontal band round body; upper<br />

part of handie and spout made in one mould, lower part in the other.<br />

Préservation : Large<br />

crack on one side; end of handie broken off: worn and discoloured.<br />

26285. Fragment of vase with ornamentation in relief. — Lengtli along rim<br />

o m. o65 mill., heig-ht o m. o5 cent. — Bought, February 1889<br />

(pi. XXII).<br />

Shape : Upright neck with projecting rim , and spreading shoulder.<br />

GoLOUR : Light grey clay with traces of yellow on outside.<br />

Ornamentation : On<br />

neck a frieze of small figures of Harpokrates standing to front,<br />

naked, with right band loucbing mouth and holding in left band a globular object<br />

at the end of a straight stem; bands of plain moulding at top and foot of neck;<br />

below on shoulder, pattern like an Aeolic hymation.<br />

Technique : Made<br />

in mould; side of one Harpokrates rubbed flat in the making and<br />

head of another much eut about.<br />

Alabastron with ornamentation in relief. — Height m. i/i5 mill.<br />

(pi. XXIII).<br />

Shape :<br />

See pi. XXIII; round vertical suspension-handie below neck.<br />

GoLouR : Brown clay (surface light grey in places); on the outside a coat of glaze<br />

varying between rich brown and red; wherc the surface of the glaze bas worn ofT,<br />

the ground is very red.
