These mo<strong>de</strong>ls have probably contributed to improve the un<strong>de</strong>rstanding of the MSC and<br />

highlighted the complexity of this event. In<strong>de</strong>ed, various complex feedback processes were<br />

involved in this crisis and justify the use of a mo<strong>de</strong>lling approach. Furthermore, mo<strong>de</strong>lling<br />

approach allows to test quantified data. As a consequence, mo<strong>de</strong>lling results have led to<br />

generate new i<strong>de</strong>as.<br />

Such results are used to argue for and against synchronous or diachronous scenarios. It is<br />

often conclu<strong>de</strong>d from mo<strong>de</strong>lling that the evaporitic sedimentation in the central<br />

Mediterranean basins began before any drawdown of sea-level at 5.60 Ma (B<strong>la</strong>nc, 2006;<br />

Govers, 2009; Govers <strong>et</strong> al., 2009; Krijgsman and Meijer, 2008; Meijer and Krijgsman,<br />

2005). To support this hypothesis, the authors invoke a rise in salinity sufficient to precipitate<br />

evaporites before the sea-level drop (B<strong>la</strong>nc, 2006), either argue that a compl<strong>et</strong>e blocking of<br />
