Hungary 14 JOHN RULE Spring 2013 Cézanne and the Past Tradition and Creativity Judith Gesko Cézanne and the Past presents an overview of Paul Cézanne’s oeuvre and his approach to the past through some eighty to one hundred paintings, drawings and water colours by the artist supplemented by thirty to forty works (paintings, sculptures, gypsum copies, prints and illuminated books) by sixteenth to nineteenth-century masters. The works include loans from major galleries in Paris, London, New York, Boston and Chicago. The researchers of the Museum of Fine Arts, along with leading scholars from Great Britain, France, Germany and Switzerland examine the twentieth-century manifestations of the art of the master from Aix-en-Provence in the context of Cézanne’s reception in Hungary and twentiethcentury Hungarian cultural and art history. In addition they explore how Cézanne integrated the culture of Provence into his art along with the classical education of the provincial young man that he was and the art he saw in museums. The catalogue shows how out of the cogitations and struggles of an artist emerged an oeuvre that triumphed over tradition and brought it under its control.

Hungary A Satirist, a Scoffer: Honoré Daumier (1808–1879) The Master of French Caricature Zsuzsa Gonda This is the catalogue of an exhibition running from October 2012 to March 2013 comprising the earliest Daumier prints in the museum’s collection, including political caricatures created in the 1830s which were published in various satirical magazines. The catalogue also features works by some of his contemporaries Eduardo de Beaumont, Cham (Amedee de Noe) , Paul Gavarni and August Canzi. Included in this series of works the artist targeted the “pear-head” Louis- Philippe, the Citizen King, but also parodied politicians and members of parliament who were in his service. His most well-known caricatures were conceived in defence of the freedom of the press and of speech. The essays consider his Early Career and Political Caricatures, Social Satire in Le Charivari (1835-1848), the Second Republic in the eyes of a Republican, and the Second Empire and his Final Years. New Ideal of Beauty in The Century of Pieter Bruegel Sixteenth-Century Netherlandish Drawings in The Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest Teréz Gerszi This catalogue, produced for an exhibition which ran from June to September 2012, analyses the most intriguing question of sixteenthcentury Netherlandish art: Italian Orientation, that is how Late Gothic art was transformed under the influence of Italian inspiration. The catalogue questions different ways artists chose to respond to new artistic requirements of their age while keeping with essential elements of their own national traditions. At a time of stormy historical events in the sixteenth-century the Netherlands underwent vast changes in its intellectual life and the arts. This century saw a deepening of the divide between medieval and modern cultures with Italian Humanism and Renaissance playing a major role in the formation of the new, humanistic system of values.
