One minute furniture, now it’s art. Florian Slotawa had already initiated a series of studio photographs in 2009 in which he brought together a total of thirty-two motifs. The series is now presented for the first time in its entirety in this lavishly produced book, which rigidly adheres to the artist’s overall design. Florian Slotawa’s photographs emphasise an absence of things in their strictly documentary delivery and thus enhance the objectness of the building, as well as the details with doorplate, electric socket or pipe work to become sculptural elements.

Die Zeit recognized him as a literarily minded contemporary some twenty years ago, and called him a poet of the subtle nuances, of delicate lines and tones. This impression is confirmed when you look at his graphic work, and even when he switches medium, be it oils, shellac, or graphite on canvas or the sculptures in bronze, wood or wire, he always follows the line. This is because the trademark of Jürgen Partenheimer’s work is the fragility that derives from the line and represents the symbolic essence of his work. This is where the CFA exhibition in Berlin takes up the story. For example, with Paula Modersohn-Becker’s portraits of children, which not only play a prominent role in this artist’s brief oeuvre (from 1898 to 1907), but are also considered a turning point in the genre. The title of the exhibition, based on the epochal youth film Kids by Larry Clark, states that it is no longer about a celebration of childhood innocence and joyous playfulness.
