CHRIST THE REDEEMER CATHOLIC CHURCH
HOUSTON, TEXAS JULY 22, 2012
Dear friends in Christ,
It’s a great week for us at CtR as we welcome, beginning
tomorrow, July 23, two new members to our parish staff. I
am overjoyed. Fr. Orrin Halepeska and Ms. Rachel Poyo
will be ministering with us and to the people of our community.
A word or two on both:
First, our new parochial vicar, Fr. Orrin. We’ve been anxiously
awaiting a new priest to assist our big parish ever
since Fr. Reginald left on March 1 to become the pastor of
St. Hyacinth in Deer Park. It’s been a long five months but
they say that good things come to those who wait, so
please join me in welcoming Fr. Orrin to CtR. He was just
ordained a priest on June 2 along with three other men for
the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. We congratulate
him on his ordination and thank God for the gift of his vocation.
As he is a brand spanking new “baby priest” he has a
lot to learn, but he also brings with him a wealth of gifts and
talents to share with our community. I’m confident he will do
great work for our parish. He’s already moved in and I can
assure you he is excited to be with us.
Fr. Orrin, 30, is from Goliad, TX and completed his undergraduate
degree at the University of Houston before
moving to St. Mary’s Seminary and the University of St.
Thomas for his masters in theology. Next weekend will be
his first full weekend in the parish and he’ll speak at all the
masses to introduce himself. We will also plan to have coffee
and donuts in the Community Center after the Sunday
morning masses so you can meet him a bit more in person.
I’m sure we will hear much more from him in the coming
weeks, but for now please join me in welcoming him to CtR.
No one is more excited to have him join our parish than me!
Thank you all for your patience and support the past several
months as we have brought in a steady supply of visiting
priests to assist me on Sundays. I’m very happy that we
will once again have two full-time priests in the parish to
serve the needs of our community.
Also joining our staff tomorrow is Rachel Poyo as our
new Director of Youth Evangelization and Catechesis. Rachel
holds both undergraduate and graduate degrees from
Franciscan University in Steubenville, OH. This is a new
position for us at CtR and, after reviewing more than 40
applicants, she was the consensus choice of our search
committee. She has a great background in working with
young people, and an even greater desire to share a love of
Christ and His Church with our youth. She will work with
Stephanie Curtis, our Pastoral Associate for Youth Ministry,
to build up a comprehensive youth ministry program for our
junior and senior high school students.
As I mentioned a few weeks ago at all the masses, we
are committed to building on an solid foundation of youth
ministry at CtR and making it even better. I get more emails
and comments on youth ministry than any other aspect
in the parish, and I know both the students and parents
desire for us to have a program that serves the needs of all
our teens. With nearly 1,000 kids in grades 6-12 that is a
daunting task, but I’m confident that Rachel will be a great
asset to our parish and help us reach even greater heights.
Of course, it’s not about having the “biggest or best” program,
or having the most kids involved (though given our
parish size we are going to be a large number of kids any
way you look at it). It’s about giving our youth the opportunity
to meet Christ and connect with the Lord and His holy
Church on a personal level. It’s a critical age for our young
people in their walk with Jesus and we will need the assistance
and support of all parents and the entire community
to help us minister to our teens. I’m truly excited to see what
the future holds for our youth ministry department. We have
great new leadership and with the new Parish Life Center
coming on line early next year the sky is the limit. Please
join me in welcoming Rachel. We’ll introduce her at all the
masses and hear from her later in August closer to the beginning
of the school year.
Speaking of the upcoming school year remember we are
collecting school supplies for the annual Operation Backpack.
You can drop them off at mass in the narthex this
weekend and next. We’ll distribute them to students in need
through CAM and Our Mother of Mercy, our sister parish.
Last Saturday evening we held our annual Altar Server
Appreciation dinner and awards ceremony and I have to
say that this is quickly becoming one of my favorite events
at CtR. Did you know that we have 150 altar servers at
CtR? 150 — that’s pretty impressive! And each of them is a
real joy to work with and has a great desire to serve the
Lord by assisting at the liturgical services of our community.
It is only fitting that we have an evening where we can
come together to thank them (and their families) and recognize
a few of them for their outstanding work.
We had a wonderful evening program put together by
Anita Ellison, our altar server ministry coordinator. Anita has
been a blessing for our parish in helping to organize, train
and schedule our servers. In typical Anita fashion, she organized
it all and then went for surgery, so she couldn’t join
us as she was home recovering (get well soon, Anita!). Fortunately,
our former director of servers, Cori Nederpelt, who
still assists with the ministry when she can, stepped in and
kept us on track for the evening. We appreciate all that
these two great ladies do on behalf of our servers and for
all the people of CtR. My thanks as well to David Keating
and the Knights of Columbus who provided a wonderful
meal for all the servers and their families.
But it is the servers themselves who deserve our most
special thanks. They help us celebrate the sacred liturgies
of the Church with reverence and grace. They assist not
only the clergy, but all of the assembly to more fully enter
into the beauty and rhythm of our rites and rituals. They are
a well-trained and dedicated bunch, and all of them have a
great love for serving. I’ve never met a more dedicated
group. They are practicing Stewardship at a high level by
giving of their time and talent to the service of the Lord.
Please join me in thanking them for their great work.
(Fr. Sean continued on page 6)

Stewardship Corner
In today’s Gospel, Jesus had planned to slip away from the
crowds for a few moments of peace and a little rest. When
He saw the people gathered, however, He put His needs
aside to meet the needs of others. Sometimes, as good
stewards, we are called to do the same.
Ministry of Music
The Ministry of Music provides music leadership
SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
LITURGICAL MUSIC RESPECT LIFE
I Heard the Voice of Jesus
Word of Life
Today’s readings are very comforting. In the first
reading and the Psalm we have the image of the
Good Shepherd, who cares for us and keeps us safe.
In the Gospel from Mark, Jesus invites the apostles to
take a break: “Come by yourselves to an out-of-theway
place and rest a little.” (Mark 6:31) Of course,
their rest was short-lived, since people soon found
them and followed them to the place.
At the 9:00 mass, you will hear two different settings
of the same hymn, I Heard the Voice of Jesus
Say. We will all sing the familiar version of this hymn
to the tune SLANE at all masses. Then at 9:00 we have
a small group of singers and instruments to sing the
same text to another tune. It is interesting to discover
how different aspects of the text come to life within a
different melody.
Of course, the choice of this text becomes obvious
when you sing,
“I heard the voice of Jesus say come unto me and
rest, Lay down, o weary one, lay down your head
upon my breast. I came to Jesus as I was, so
weary, worn and sad, I found in him a resting
place and he has made me glad.
(Fun fact: hymn refers to the text, tune refers to, well,
the tune.)
This week many of our children will take part in
Elementary Day Camp. At the end of the week they
will celebrate Mass. Some of the music they sing will
be from the camp CD, but most will be music they will
sing again here on Sundays. I hope you are always
encouraging your children to sing during Mass and
that you will enjoy hearing them practice their music
from this week.
Peace and love,
In addition, it comes within the meaning of religious freedom
that religious communities should not be prohibited
from freely undertaking to show the special value of their
doctrine in what concerns the organization of society and
the inspiration of the whole of human activity. Finally, the
social nature of man and the very nature of religion afford
the foundation of the right of men freely to hold meetings
and to establish educational, cultural, charitable and social
organizations, under the impulse of their own religious
sense.
mentor the next generation of servers, often giving up her
Saturday mornings to “show the ropes” to our rookies.
She’s a great example of Stewardship in action and her
presence is a great blessing to our community.
