CHRIST THE REDEEMER CATHOLIC CHURCH
HOUSTON, TEXAS April 21, 2013
Dear friends in Christ,
By this time next week our 28th annual CtR Spring Festival
will be in full-swing. Those of you who have been previously
know well what a great weekend it is – truly a community
event. And if you’ve never been before then you are in for a
real treat! Our chairpersons Mike and Camille Havelka and
their dedicated core committee of volunteers have been hard
at work planning and preparing for this great event. You definitely
want to make plans to attend at some point over the
weekend, so let’s review some important information that you
will want to keep handy.
The tents will begin to go up tomorrow, Mon., April 22, in the
front parking lot. It will be a great help if you would please use
the entrance near the traffic light when coming to the campus
this week. That will be easiest for you and safest for our crews.
The “old entrance” will be blocked and the front parking area
covered in tents, so go around to the back when you come to
the parish this week. It’s a good idea to remember our traffic
flow pattern that is in effect here: counter-clockwise. Come in
the entrance by the light and then circle around to the back
parking area (particularly if you are coming to the office), and
then exit out the driveway behind the Education building. At the
11 am Mass next Sunday we will have an extra officer directing
traffic, and we will use the normal exit as an entrance this one
day only to help the flow for that particular Mass. But don’t get
used to it! That is not an entrance. It’s an exit. That driveway
will be reduced to one lane this week to make room for the
BBQ pits, Dumpsters, and other support vehicles. Drive slowly
and obey the posted signs and you will be fine.
To make it even easier, please consider taking the shuttle to
Mass next weekend. Parking is going to be a challenge with
much of the area in front of the church blocked so why not park
and ride? We have a free shuttle service both Saturday
night and all day Sunday. The shuttle will run round-trip, from
Millsap Elementary School (about 1/4 mile north of the parish
on Huffmeister, just past Cypress-N. Houston Drive) on Saturday
from 4:30 pm to 12 midnight and again on Sunday from
8:30 am to 8 pm. Also on Sunday we’ll have an extra shuttle
running round-trip to Hunting Specialties, just off the corner of
Huffmeister and Cypress-N. Houston. You can take the shuttle
to Mass and stay for the festival. I highly encourage you to take
shuttle. It will save you time and aggravation. It basically will
save you from committing parking sin! The shuttle will drop you
off right in front and take you back in no time flat. Trust me on
this one – it’s the way to go.
You can begin dropping off donations this week beginning
tomorrow in the Community Center and continuing throughout
the week. This is most important for the flea market items that
you wish to donate. Clean out the garage and bring your unwanted
items to donate to the Church. The flea market has
become one of our biggest events of the festival the past few
years. There are quite a few good deals to be had there. Remember
it all goes to support the work of the Church so you
know it’s going to a good cause. And who doesn’t love a good
garage sale? And if you’d like to help during the week sort and
price items, we are happy to have your assistance.
You can also start bringing your items for the auction. We
definitely need your items for this most important part of the
Festival. As usual we will have both a live and silent auction,
and our crew will help you determine which is best for your
items. In general the live auction is for our bigger, higher dollar
items. People often ask what should be donated to the auction.
The answer is, “If it is something you would bid on yourself,
then it might very well make a good auction item!” Check our
webpage for more information on the Festival and the auction:
festival.ctrcc.com. Remember we also take cash donations
for the auction so that we might use it to buy items to
put up for auction. Auction chairpersons Beckie and Tony
Croes can answer more of your questions. Among the items
up for bid will be free use of our new Parish Life Center hall.
You can plan your wedding reception or anniversary celebration
right here at CtR. It’s a great gift that I expect will draw a
lot of interest, so come place your bid!
This weekend is the last chance for presale tickets. Stop
by the booth in the Parish Life Center to get your tickets for
all the rides, games, and booths. The T-shirts are mighty
fine, too. You can also get BBQ dinner tickets in advance
and that’s always a good idea. Remember the dinner is
served only on Sunday from 11 am – 2:30 pm. It’s one of the
oldest traditions at the Festival (thank you, Holub family!) and
everything is made from scratch with love. Don’t miss it! After
the dinner we convert the community center for bingo on
Sunday afternoon (you can also play Saturday night, too!).
Though Sunday is the big day we think about the Festival,
the weekend actually kicks off on Friday night with a high
school event. It involves a paint war, a concert from David’s
Heart (an excellent band), and who knows what else! It’s only
for high school students. The kids are in the know, but check
the youth webpage (www.ctryouth.com) for details.
Beginning on Saturday morning you can start to bring your
donations of flowers and greenery for the plant shop, as well
as cakes, cookies and goodies for the Sweet Shop bake
sale. A special note to all you bakers: we always end up
running short on cakes for the cakewalk booth. If you can
bake an extra sheet cake or two (nothing fancy, just tasty!)
please bring them for us to give away. Or make a batch of
cookies or treats for the Sweet Shop.
On Saturday evening the place starts hopping after the 5
pm Mass with some of the food court open, beer and wine
booths, flea market, and a few of the rides. We always have
a great band with a packed dance floor so come enjoy a
great night. Saturday night has become a very popular night
for the Festival. It’s a wonderful evening and sets the stage
nicely for all the family fun the next day. Sunday gets going
with the aforementioned BBQ dinner beginning at 11 am and
then everything – all the rides, games, food booths, flea market,
plant booth and everything else – is up and running by
12 noon and continues until 7 pm.
Of course the last event of the Festival is the grand drawing
for our Raffle. This is the biggest and best part of the
Festival every year. We’re giving away a new Toyota this
year, but you cannot win if you do not play. I’m often asked
how to support the Festival if you can’t attend. The easiest
and best way is to buy raffle tickets. This is really a big portion
of our whole event, so please do your part and buy a
book or two and encourage others to do the same. Finally,
please allot time after 7:05 pm to assist with the breakdown
of the game booths. There is much work to do, but we have a
good system in place. Just need some of your man (and
woman) power at that time.
Spread the word to your family and friends and pray for
good weather. I’ll see ya’ at the Festival!
Peace, Fr. Sean

Paul and Barnabas encountered both violent
rejection and joyful acceptance of the message
that they preached. We, too, may meet with mixed reactions
when we use our gifts in the service of God. But, the
Gospel assures us, the reward for those who follow
faithfully is eternal life.
Ministry of Music
The Ministry of Music provides music leadership for all parish
liturgies, including masses, weddings, funerals, prayer
and reconciliation services. Parishioners are invited to
share their musical talents with the rest of the community
through the music ministry.
LITURGICAL MUSIC
Good Shepherd Sunday
This Fourth Sunday of Easter falls at the center of our
fifty-day celebration of The Easter Season. We are being
prepared to take on Jesus’ mission during the next few
weeks leading up to the Ascension and Pentecost.
Today we hear Jesus’ assurance of his continued care
for us as well as his promise of eternal life as he calls his
church to ministry. We can’t resist singing our favorite
“shepherd” songs – there are so many to choose from!
Those involved in music here at CTR are very committed
to their ministry. Since we enjoy singing and playing for
mass so much, others often don’t realize the work that goes
into the end result. We are fortunate to have talented and
generous people in all of our groups. We will actually hear
most of them this weekend.
Saturday at 5:00 the handbells will play. This group,
directed by Julie Weinmann, rehearses weekly and plays at
various masses throughout the year. You might want to put
their upcoming year-end concert on your calendar: Monday,
May 20 at 7:00 in the chapel.
The Adult Choir sings every week at 9:00 as well as at
special liturgies. They rehearse every week, with some extra
rehearsals at busy times of the year, like Christmas,
Easter, Confirmation, etc.
The Choristers, our children’s choir, will sing at 11:00
mass this week. They are already learning about ministry –
even at their young age! They have a commitment to rehearsing
and singing at mass, as well as to learning the
prayers of the liturgy and behavior as leaders of the assembly’s
song. The Youth Singers, our high school group, has
the same commitment.
Every Sunday evening, we have the Contemporary
Choir leading us in spirited song. They rehearse every
week, too! In fact, you will find someone rehearsing music
here at CTR almost every night of the week – and sometimes
on weekends.
Of course, there are many ways to live out the ministerial
call. Music is that call for some. What is it for you?
Peace and love,
Bridget Wenk
All choirs rehearse at the usual times this week.
FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
Reception of Holy Communion
Our second graders are soon going to receive their first
Holy Communion. They have been studying and practicing
on how to receive the Precious Body and Precious Blood.
As the community we will also be helping them learn the
proper way to receive communion by our example. I would
like to review and reflect a little on how we are to receive the
Precious Body and Blood of our Lord.
After we recite “Lord, I am not worthy that you should
enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall
be healed,” we kneel and wait for the ministers to begin to
distribute communion. We come out of our pews and form a
procession to the ministers of Holy Communion to receive
the Body and Blood of Christ. In the United States, the normative
posture for receiving communion is standing. Because
we are “in procession” kneeling or genuflecting is discouraged
because of the possibility of the person behind
tripping or falling over the person in front of them. The General
Instruction of the Roman Missal also emphasizes uniformity
of posture among participants gathered at Mass.
Kneeling or genuflecting while everyone else receives
standing conflicts with the communal nature of Mass.
Each person is to bow their heads as a sign of reverence
before receiving the Blessed Sacrament. This may be
done immediately before receiving or as the person in front
of you is receiving. As you approach the minister they will
say “The Body or the Blood of Christ” to which you respond,
“Amen.”
There are two ways of receiving Holy Communion: in the
hand or on the tongue. If you are receiving in the hand, as
St. John Chrysostom said, “place your right hand under your
left to make a throne for the King…. The Eucharist is a gift
to be received not something that is to be taken.” We are
to receive the Eucharist from the hand of the minister
not to take it for ourselves. We should not be grabbing the
host from the minister. After you have consumed the host
proceed to the Precious Blood. If you are receiving on the
tongue, open your mouth wide and extend your tongue so
that the ministers can easily place the host on the tongue
without touching the tongue or dropping the host. After receiving
the host, proceed to the Precious Blood. You should
never come forward to receive communion chewing gum.
No one is obliged to receive both the Sacred Host and
the Precious Blood. Christ is truly present under the form of
bread and under the form of wine by virtue of the words pronounced
by the priest during the consecration of the Mass.
The whole Christ, soul and divinity, is truly received whether
one take Sacred Host only or only receives the Precious
Blood. However receiving both reflects a fuller sign of the
Eucharistic banquet.
We come forward with empty hands and hearts to be
nourished by the Body and Blood of Christ and we return to
our pews empowered and strengthened to go out into the
world to witness to the power and presence of Christ in our
lives.
See you at Mass
House in NW area needed
Do you know of a house in the greater Cypress or Spring area
that is available for use? Our parish, in conjunction with others
in the northwest area, is seeking to host a student from the
University of Notre Dame for a two-year apprentice program in
parish catechetic ministry. These college graduates live and
pray together, and will work in our parishes’ Religious Education
office while also continuing in their Master’s degree program
at Notre Dame. It’s a post-graduate work-study program
to train the future lay ministers of the Church. CtR is seeking
to host one student beginning this fall, but a house is needed
for four apprentices to live in during their time in Houston. Ideally
it would be a 4-bedroom, 2-bath house (or a 3-bedroom
with a large master suite for two people to share). If you are
interested in donating a house or renting a house at a reduced
rate for two years (Aug. 2013 through June 2015) please contact
Julie Blevins at the Archdiocesan Office of Evangelization
& Catechesis: 713-741-8796 or email: jblevins@archgh.org.
Catholic Home Missions Appeal
One way the Catholic Home Missions Appeal works to
support home mission dioceses in the U.S. is by supporting
seminarian formation in poor dioceses. Often home
mission priests and lay ministers require special training to
attend to the unique needs of their faith communities. Your
support is needed. Please help strengthen the Church at
home by making a generous gift to next week’s appeal.
The Classics
The Classics, a group of parishioners over the age of 50
Senior of the Year. Come and enjoy the pizza and good
companionship. Contact Ann Muench at 281/888-9964.
CHRIST THE REDEEMER CATHOLIC CHURCH
HOUSTON, TEXAS April 21, 2013
The purpose of the World Day of Prayer for Vocations is to publically fulfill
the Lord's instruction to, "Pray the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into
his harvest" (Mt 9:38; Lk 10:2). As a climax to a prayer that is continually
offered throughout the Church, it affirms the primacy of faith and grace in all
that concerns vocations to the priesthood and to the consecrated life. While
appreciating all vocations, the Church concentrates its attention this day on
vocations to the ordained ministries (priesthood and diaconate), to the Religious
life in all its forms (male and female, contemplative and apostolic), to
societies of apostolic life, to secular institutes in their diversity of services
and membership, and to the missionary life, in the particular sense of mission
"ad gentes".
O loving and gracious God, Father of all, you bless your people in every
time and season and provide for their needs through your providential care.
Your Church is continually in need of Priest, Sisters and Brothers to offer
themselves in the service of the Gospel by lives of dedicated love.
Open the hearts of your sons and daughters to listen to your call in their
lives. Give them the gift of understand to discern your invitation to serve you
and your Church. Give them the gift of courage to follow your call.
May they have the spirit of young Samuel who found fulfillment in his life
when he said:” Speak Lord, for your servant is listening”. (1 Sam3:9)
We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Redeemer. Amen
“Therefore, neither the one who
plants nor the one who waters is
anything, but only God, who causes
the growth”.
