CHRIST THE REDEEMER CATHOLIC CHURCH
HOUSTON, TEXAS AUGUST 26, 2012
Dear Friends in Christ,
Welcome back!
Wait a minute, you might be saying. “Welcome back” from what?
Well a great many of parishioners today are back with us for the
first time in a several months. The local public schools are back in
session beginning tomorrow (our Catholic school children returned
last week), and with the start of a new academic year we always
see a spike in our attendance at Mass. We are happy to see you
again and I pray that this coming school year will be a blessing to
all of our children, and a time of relative calm and peace for all of
our teachers and administrators. May they all be filled with gifts of
wisdom and understanding. And remember to keep an eye out for
them as you drive through the school zones.
I’m never quite sure why we lose so many people during the
summer time, but regardless I am happy to have all of our families
with us. I understand the need and importance for a vacation and
time away during the summer, but let’s remember not to take a
“vacation from our vocation,” as we used to say in the seminary.
All of us are called to be disciples of the Lord and that is a 12month-a-year
undertaking. Let’s make Sunday Mass attendance
our highest priority for the coming school year. Parents, there is no
greater gift you can give your child then teaching them to love Jesus
and serve Him with grateful hearts.
When we are in communion with the Body of Christ (the
Church) and when we receive holy communion from the table of
the Lord we are thus strengthened to live as disciples. We need
that strength and sense of community that can only come from
being part of something bigger than ourselves. I guarantee you —
and this is an absolute, money-back guarantee — that if you put
the Lord Jesus Christ and his holy Church as the first and foremost
“obligation” in your life you will see a change unlike any other.
He will give us all we need to face the coming school year and
everything else in this crazy world!
Thank you to all parents who registered their children for the
upcoming Religious Education school year which begins the week
of Sept. 23. We are still tallying the numbers, but I fully suspect us
to again approach 2,500 children in RE. We have closed registration
for the time being so that we might balance the classes, order
books and supplies, and properly train for the catechists. We will
re-open registration one final time later in September and we’ll be
sure to let you know those dates and times when they are set.
With that many students we are also still in need of RE class
teachers and catechists as well as volunteers in a variety of roles.
Please consider volunteering your time and talent to pass on the
faith to the next generation. We will give you training and support
throughout the year. Don’t worry that you are not “holy enough” or
“smart enough” about the faith. If you have a willing heart and an
open mind, we can help you do great things for our children. Talk
to any of the members of our RE department for how you can be
part of this dynamic ministry at CtR.
I also want to introduce our new Director of Religious Education
at CtR, Debbie Jones. We are overjoyed to welcome Debbie to our
staff beginning tomorrow, Aug. 27. Debbie comes to us with more
than 30 years experience as a catechist, trainer and director of
Religious Education. She has served as a DRE at two other parishes
in the archdiocese and worked with all age groups, from the
youngest of children to adults. She is finishing her Master’s in Theology
at the University of St. Thomas School of Theology at St.
Mary’s Seminary, and serves as a consultant and catechetical
trainer for RE teachers through the archdiocese. We are blessed
to have her talents at CtR, and she is excited to join our excellent
Religious Education department. She’ll get right to work with our
staff in meeting and training our teachers and catechists for this
coming year.
I want to thank our dedicated staff in RE who have done great
work over the summer in getting us ready for the upcoming year
while we searched for the new director (Debbie replaces Mary
Phillips, who retired at the end of June). Michelle Costa, Jill Dimiceli,
Debbie Hawkins, and Joyce Truax are to be commended for
their work on behalf of the students and parents, and they too are
excited to welcome Debbie Jones as the new DRE. I think they are
going to form a wonderful team to serve our many needs in RE for
years to come. It takes dedicated people who love the Church to
work in such a big and complex department like Religious Education
at CtR. Thank you all, and please join me in welcoming Debbie
Jones as our new DRE.
This weekend at CtR we are hosting an Engaged Encounter
weekend for 50 couples who are preparing for the Sacrament of
Marriage. Engaged Encounter (EE) is a national program conducted
in nearly every diocese in the country to assist couples who
wish to be married in the Church. It consists of a weekend retreat
led by a priest and two married couples plus an additional support
couple. It’s more often than not held at a local retreat house, but
because the demand is so great in the Archdiocese of Galveston-
Houston it is also held “in parish” a few times a year and this is our
sixth time to host it at CtR. While the EE weekend is open to couples
from throughout the archdiocese, many of those in attendance
will be married here over the course of the next year.
We average roughly 50 weddings a year at CtR but we also
prepare many more couples who marry elsewhere. As we do for
every sacrament, however, we require that those who are seeking
to be married be well-trained and properly prepared (just as we do
for 2nd graders making their First Communion or high school students
preparing for Confirmation). As such our marriage preparation
program, overseen by Margaret Carnicle our Director of Family
Life, is constantly at work. Margaret does a great job for our
community in keeping the couples on track for marriage. As you
might imagine couples going through marriage preparation require
a lot of attention, instruction and reassurance. Thanks as well to
Adrian and Cherrie Cavestany, Scott and Arlene Hawkins, and
Gregory and Candice Hall for being on the team with me this
weekend. We are blessed to have several EE instructor couples in
our parish.
We stress to couples that the wedding is just a day but the marriage
is forever. While the details of the ceremony (the social aspect,
which our wedding coordinator Dianna Perham helps with)
are important, we try to focus the couple’s attention on the big
picture of what it means to be married in the Church. That’s where
a program like Engaged Encounter is so important. We also operate
an active Sponsor Couple program where veteran couples
from the parish work hand-in-hand with an engaged couple in
preparation for marriage. We are always on the lookout for married
couples who would like to assist by being a Sponsor Couple. You
need not have the so-called “perfect marriage” (I’ve never met
one, by the way) to be a Sponsor Couple. You just have to be willing
to work as husband and wife to journey with a young couple on
their way to the altar. Contact Margaret in the office for more information
on who you can assist with marriage preparation at CtR.
The authentic witness of experienced couples just like you is very
much needed. Please also keep our engaged couples in your
prayers and if you are at the 5 pm Mass this Sunday you’ll see our
EE couples in attendance as it is our wrap-up for the weekend.
Peace,
Fr. Sean

In today’s first reading, Joshua challenges the people to
decide whom they will serve. Recalling God’s faithfulness
to them and to their ancestors, the people declare, “We
also will serve the Lord, for He is our God.” May we, too,
be mindful of God’s gifts to us and renew our commitment
to serve Him with grateful hearts.
Dismissal
Today’s readings challenge us to decide: can we accept
Jesus’ hard teachings and follow him, or will we leave?
In fact, each Sunday we are confronted with this choice.
Sometimes the brief dismissal rites might seem like an
afterthought. But the dismissal isn’t just a sending forth; it is
a sending forth to live what we have just heard and celebrated.
In the new Roman Missal, Pope Benedict XVI added
some new choices for the words of dismissal: Go and announce
the Gospel of the Lord; and Go in peace, glorifying
the Lord by your life. These offer a clear explanation why
we are being dismissed. A Maryknoll priest I used to work
with would always remind us that we are all missionaries.
We are called to mission at the end of each and every liturgy.
A few weeks ago I wrote about the closing hymn in this
space. Today we sing The Summons, which asks the question
of the day:
Will you come and follow me if I but call your name?
Will you go where you don’t know and never be the
same?
Will you let my love be shown, will you let my name be
known,
Will you let my life be grown in you and you in me?
Peace and love,
TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
LITURGY
Receiving from the Cup
I want to take a slight detour from looking at postures and gestures
this week to talk about something that was brought to our
attention in the gospel readings from this past Sunday. We continue
to hear the Bread of Life discourse from the Gospel of
John. This past week there were three references to drinking the
blood of Christ: “unless you eat the flesh of the son of Man and
drink his blood, you do not have life within you.” Whoever eats
my flesh and drinks my blood, has eternal life. Whoever eats my
flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.”
For the first eleven centuries of the church, the norm was to receive
the Body and the Blood of Christ at the Eucharist. Communion
was given under the form of wine to infants and in the
form of bread to those who could not be present. Beginning in
the 12 th century, the Western churches gradually abandon communion
in the form of wine for all except the presiding priest.
Various factors led to this change. The eucharistic piety of the
period centered on adoration and not on reception of communion.
In an age of intense sacramental realism, the fear of spillage
was widespread. The Council of Constance in 1415 declared
communion in the form of bread alone to be the law of the
church. The Council of Trent in the 16 th century attempted to
reintroduce the chalice in response to Protestant Reformers who
had reintroduced the chalice to their congregations. No consensus
was achieved and it was left up to the pope. Pope Pius IV
granted an indult permitting communion under both kinds in several
states and dioceses in central Europe. However these idults
were withdrawn by subsequent popes and from 1621 to 1965
communion under both kinds was restricted to the presiding
priest.
The restoration of communion under the form of bread and wine
was an important objective of the 20 th century liturgical movement
and sparked lively debate during Vatican II. The result was
that communion under both kinds could be distributed to the
faithful at limited occasions. The discussion continued and
in1978 the National Conference of Catholic Bishops approved
the practice extending reception of communion under both kinds
to Sundays and holy days. In 2001 the US Conference of Catholic
Bishops issued a document Norms for Distribution and Reception
of Holy Communion Under Both Kinds in the Diocese of the
United States of America. This document again made normative
distribution and reception of the Body and Blood of the Lord to
the faithful.
Not everyone receives the Blood of Christ at Eucharist. One of
the reasons most often stated is “I am afraid of getting diseases
from the germs of others.” Each of the Extraordinary Ministers of
Holy Communion is instructed to wipe the inside and outside of
the rim of the cup containing the precious blood after each person
receives. They are also instructed to turn the cup before
presenting it to the next communicant. There have been several
studies done by the Center for Disease Control and there has
never been an outbreak of disease associated with drinking from
the common communion cup.
At the Last Supper, Jesus told his disciples, “Take and eat, take
and drink.”. By sharing in both Eucharistic species we share
more fully in the sacred realities as we share in the saving bread
and the chalice of salvation. If you have not been receiving from
the cup, I invite you to begin to experience the fullness of the gift
given to us by Christ himself, the Body of Christ and the Blood of
Christ.
God bless,
Deacon Jack

Respect Life
Word of Life
It should also be noted that in a society that respects natural
law’s right of religious liberty, a conscience clause
should be redundant. That is: with or without a stated
“conscience clause,” the government cannot force religious
institutions and churches to act against their beliefs. It
should be understood, and has been understood that it is
the natural right of man to follow his faith… until now.
Coins for CAM
EDC’s Coins for CAM was a huge success. Through the
generosity of our children’s donations, Christ the Redeemer
is pleased to announce that we collected $404.62 along
with all the many food donations for CAM. “Blessed is the
