CHRIST THE REDEEMER CATHOLIC CHURCH
HOUSTON, TEXAS September 30, 2012
Dear friends in Christ,
My sincere thanks to all of you who turned in your Stewardship
Commitment cards last weekend at Mass. We had a
great response and more are coming into the office each day.
It is never too late for a response to Stewardship, so if you
still have your card, could I ask that you please return it
ASAP, either by dropping it in the collection or bringing it (or
mailing) it to the office? As always we’re asking every family
to participate in Stewardship. We’re off to a great start so do
your part in committing your time, talent and treasure. Thank
you everyone.
As I mentioned last week the Stewardship Commitment
cards will be processed in the next week. Recall that the Time
and Treasure portion is for you to track and I hope that you
are more committed to living Stewardship every day as a result
of it. As for the Talent portion we will tabulate who signed
up for various ministries and then the ministry heads will
begin contact those interested in the next few weeks. We are
able to track those have signed up through a software program,
so if you signed up for a particular ministry, we’ll get
your contact information to the ministry head and you can
expect a call or e-mail in the coming weeks. If you don’t hear
from someone by the end of October, please let us know. If
you have made a pledge of Stewardship it is incumbent upon
those who head the ministries to make sure we follow up with
you. I don’t want anyone to feel that your offer of Stewardship
is not honored, respected, and most of all, needed.
This weekend we are offering a sneak preview of the new
Parish Life Center after all the masses. We still have about
three more months of construction before it is completed
around Christmas, but this is an opportunity to come take a
brief tour and see what it looks like in the unfinished stage.
It’s like doing a walk-thru on a house under construction.
You’ll get to see the big empty space without any of the finishes
yet, but it will give you an idea about the scope of the
building. It’s looking terrific! We’re all excited about the progress
that’s been made and it is going to be a most welcomed
addition to our parish. We have needed a building like
this to be able to meet the current demands of the parish and
prepare us for even more growth in the future.
As you look around this weekend keep in mind that it a)
was all made possible by the generous stewardship of parishioners
like you to our Capital Campaign, and b) that it is far
from paid for! The total construction cost is right around $12
million. Our Capital Campaign has raised about $5.9 million in
pledges so far. Our goal is $6 million for this first phase, so
we still have a little more work to do in that area. The remaining
$6 million will be tackled through a future campaign and
from our general operating budget in coming years. And while
our debt service is low at two percent, we want to be able to
pay off our loan in a timely manner.
So remember as you tour the new PLC that your financial
contribution toward it is very much needed. We still have only
about 25 percent of our 5,300 families who have made a
pledge. If you have not yet joined us in contributing to the
construction of the PLC we ask that you join us in this historic
effort for our parish. Everyone will benefit from this new building
— it will be used by young and old alike — and we all
have a responsibility to make it come to fruition. We’ll have
Capital Campaign pledge cards available at the tour, and
we’ll also be conducting a parish-wide effort to get us to our
first goal later in November. Gifts of all sizes are most needed
and appreciated.
We began our new Religious Education school year last
week with more than 2,450 children registered in our classes.
That’s just a staggering number of children, and it will go up
by a few more when we hold last registration on Oct. 4 (space
is obviously limited, but we’ll try to accommodate as many as
we can). Our first week came and went without too many
problems and complications, and that’s thanks to the tireless
dedication of our RE staff on behalf of all of you. Please join
me in thanking Debbie Jones, our Director of Religious Education,
and her staff of Michelle Costa, Jill Dimiceli, Debbie
Hawkins and Joyce Truax. Parents I ask that you please help
these fine ladies by bringing your children each Sunday, and
by supporting your children’s teachers. It is not easy to manage
that many children and that many classes. Think of it —
it’s like we are running a very large school each week. Think
about how many aides and support staff work at the local Cy-
Fair schools, and here we are trying to offer the same educational
experience for the Catholic faith. We really need our
parents to support the staff and lend a hand when you can.
Please also try to work with the class assignment you have
received. We simply cannot switch children from one class to
the next without upsetting the entire system. We are all in this
together and I’d ask that you help us help your children by
being present and on-time for class. It’s also important that
parents remind your children of the importance of respectful
behavior in class. RE classes are not time to goof off and act
silly. We usually don’t have too many problems, but when we
do it can make for a trying day for our teachers, aides, staff
and volunteers. Let’s work together and cooperate with one
another so that we can have a faith-filled year and help our
children grow in their relationship with the Lord.
Remember that our annual CtR Golf Tournament is just a
few weeks away on Monday, October 15. All golfers are invited
out to Longwood Golf Club, which is conveniently located
just a few minutes from the parish. Entry fee is only $125 and
we have room for foursomes and single players. It includes
lunch, dinner and plenty of fun along the way. The Knights of
Columbus do a great job of hosting it each year and the proceeds
go to benefit CAM and youth scholarships from the
parish. Pass the word to your co-workers and friends who
might be golfers and come join us for a great day on the links.
See our CtR website for more info and registration form.
Finally, next Saturday, Oct. 6 at 10:30 am we will host our
annual Blessing of Animals in honor of St. Francis of Assisi,
who of course was friend to all of God’s creatures and is the
patron saint of animals. We always hold the blessing on the
closest Saturday to St. Francis’ feast day of Oct. 4, so join us
next Saturday in the back parking (nee, barking) lot near the
mailbox. All creatures, great and small, are welcome to attend.
We always have a lot of dogs, a few cats, some fish, a
hamster or two and a menagerie of other creatures. It’s always
a lot of fun to meet you and your pets so make plans to
join us.
Peace,
St. James warns in today’s second reading that those who
hoard their wealth and live only for themselves will be condemned.
But in the Gospel, Jesus assures us that all who
give of themselves for His sake will be rewarded.
Prayer Blanket Ministry
The Prayer Blanket Ministry involves sewing lap sized
blankets for members of our parish who are in
need of physical or emotional healing. This is
a solitary ministry. Seamstresses are needed
to sew and pray over the blankets during their
assembly. Blankets are also blessed at the
monthly healing Mass. There is also a need for nonsewers
in this group.
LITURGICAL MUSIC
Youth Singers of Christ the Redeemer
Today marks the first time this fall that the Youth Singers
will lead the music at the 11:00 mass. The Youth Singers
is a choir made up of students in grades 8-12, as well
as early college students. These young people love music
and want to contribute to the parish liturgy by sharing their
musical gifts.
The National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry, in
its document, From Age to Age: The Challenge of Worship
with Adolescents, states that, “Our aim is to encourage and
support youth involvement in the Christian lifestyle, in the
liturgical ministries, and in the assembly.” (no. 11) “They
give witness that in these new generations, Christ is still
proclaiming his gospel and the people are responding to
God by both song and prayer. The faith experiences of adolescents
enrich our own sense of the continuing presence
of Christ’s Spirit in the world and give us hope.”
Young people are not just the “future church”; they are
members of the church now. As such, they have the right
and duty by reason of their baptism to be involved in ministry.
The members of the Youth Singers understand this.
While they have fun at rehearsals and enjoy singing with
one another, they are also learning their role as leaders in
the music ministry. You will hear one of the singers give the
Responsorial Psalm today and most times that the group
sings. This is leadership in prayer for the entire community,
young and old alike.
The NFCYM states that the youth should experience
and participate in liturgy with the whole Body of Christ,
young and old and everyone in between.
I hope that you will find hope in the ministry of these
young people, and that you will encourage the youth of our
parish to participate in the liturgy to the fullest extent.
Peace and love,
Bridget Wenk
The Youth Singers meet on
Monday evenings, 5:45-7:15 in the church. We sing at
the 11:00 mass on Sundays about twice a month, sometimes
alone, sometimes combined with the Choristers.
Please join us! For more information contact me:
website.
TWENTY– SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
LITURGY
Receiving Communion
For ten months we have been saying and singing new responses
in Mass due to the new translation of the Roman
Missal. The new translation has caused many of us to listen
more attentively and to pay more attention to parts of the
Mass. Most of the ways we celebrate Mass did not change
and for those parts we do the same old, same old. Some
times when we do same old, same old, we get a little lax,
begin to take shortcuts or forget how we are supposed to do
things. The way we are to receive Holy Communion did not
change with the new translation and for this time I would like
to review and reflect a little on how we are to receive the Precious
Body and Blood of our Lord.
After we recite “Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter
under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be
healed,” we kneel and wait for the ministers to begin to distribute
communion. We come out of our pews and form a
procession to the ministers of Holy Communion to receive the
Body and Blood of Christ. In the United States, the normative
posture for receiving communion is standing. Because we
are “in procession” kneeling or genuflecting is discouraged
because of the possibility of the person behind tripping or
falling over the person in front of them. The General Instruction
of the Roman Missal also emphasizes uniformity of posture
among participants gathered at Mass. Kneeling or genuflecting
while everyone else receives standing conflicts with
the communal nature of Mass.
Each person is to bow their heads as a sign of reverence before
receiving the Blessed Sacrament. This may be done
immediately before receiving or as the person in front of you
is receiving. As you approach the minister they will say “The
Body or the Blood of Christ” to which you respond, “Amen.”
There are two ways of receiving Holy Communion: in the
hand or on the tongue. If you are receiving in the hand, as
St. John Chrysostom said, “place your right hand under your
left to make a throne for the King…. The Eucharist is a gift to
be received not something that is to be taken.” We are to
receive the Eucharist from the hand of the minister not to take
it for ourselves. After you have consumed the host proceed to
the Precious Blood. If you are receiving on the tongue, open
your mouth wide and extend your tongue so that the ministers
can easily place the host on the tongue without touching the
tongue or dropping the host. After receiving the host, proceed
to the Precious Blood. You should never come forward
to receive communion chewing gum.
No one is obliged to receive both the Sacred Host and the
Precious Blood. Christ is truly present under the form of
bread and under the form of wine by virtue of the words pronounced
by the priest during the consecration of the Mass.
The whole Christ, soul and divinity, is truly received whether
one take Sacred Host only or only receives the Precious
Blood. However receiving both reflects a fuller sign of the
Eucharistic banquet.
We come forward with empty hands and hearts to be nourished
by the Body and Blood of Christ and we return to our
pews empowered and strengthened to go out into the world
to witness to the power and presence of Christ in our lives.
See you at Mass
Respect Life
Word of Life
As a doctor, the freedom to practice based not only on scientific
knowledge but also on my faith and conscience allows
me and all physicians and healthcare providers to offer
the best quality of medicine possible. As a patient, I
want my doctors, nurses and other healthcare providers to
offer the same type of care. The moment we allow our conscience
to be replaced by a government “conscience,” we
begin to lose our freedom.
