CHRIST THE REDEEMER CATHOLIC CHURCH
HOUSTON, TEXAS May 26, 2013
Dear friends in Christ,
On this Memorial Day weekend we remember all those who
have given their life in service to our country. May God keep
them always in the palm of his hand and comfort those who
mourn their passing. Our office is closed on Monday in observance
and will reopen on Tuesday. We have several short announcements
today, none of which are really related but all of
which are important so let’s get right to them:
Construction update: You may have noticed the old storage
building in the southwest corner of our property has been dismantled
and removed and soon the smaller Scout Hut next to it
will be, too. Those two structures were the oldest and most dilapidated
buildings on our campus. They were literally falling
apart and were quickly becoming dangerous and unusable.
We’re replacing them with a new metal frame building similar to
the other one in the back parking lot. This will give us expanded
storage space for our many ministries, particularly our Spring
Festival which has an increasing need for more storage space.
It will clean up our property too, and will give our maintenance
staff a proper place to house its tools and equipment.
The new storage building will be constructed beginning in
June and should be ready for use in July. We’re paying for it
from the savings we realized from construction of the new PLC
which came in well under budget and from our operating capital.
We are also replacing several of the wooden posts near the
east entrance to the church. These were unsightly and were
rotting badly after only being installed a few years ago. The
company that built the church is doing this for us at no charge.
Staff additions: We welcome Bryan Smyth to CtR as our
new Coordinator of High School Ministry under the direction of
Rachel Poyo, our Director of Youth Evangelization and Catechesis.
Bryan comes to us from the Archdiocese of Denver
where he has been a Youth Minister at Light of the World
Church in Littleton, CO for the past two years. He’s a graduate
of Franciscan University of Steubenville, OH with a BA in Catechetics
and a Concentration in Youth Ministry. He brings great
experience and even more enthusiasm for youth ministry and I
know he and Rachel will team well together to help us bring the
heart of Jesus ever closer to our high school students. I’m
hopeful of adding a Coordinator of Junior High Ministry to our
Youth Ministry staff soon to further minister to our teens.
A reminder that we have two current openings on our staff at
the moment, one for an assistant in our Front Office and one for
an assistant in our Liturgy Department. The Front Office position
is a part-time (15-20 hours a week) to help with various
duties in the office, including data entry, record keeping and
occasional work on the parish bulletin. Great communication
skills and experience with computers are a must. Submit resumes
and an application (available in the office) to Charlotte
Conner at cconner@ctrcc.com, 281-469-5533, ext. 109. The
Liturgy Assistant position is also a part-time position of roughly
28 hours a week (sometimes more) to help in all aspects of
liturgical preparation and celebration. For more information contact
Carol Moses at cmoses@ctrcc.com or ext. 120.
First Communions: In addition to all those kids who made
First Communion on Mother’s Day weekend we have 62 children
who made their First Communion at 5 pm Mass this Saturday.
Most of these children are part of what we call our “Update
Classes.” For the most part they are children in grades 3-8 who
did not make their First Communion at the normative time of
2nd grade. Perhaps they were not enrolled, or their families
moved, or they came from another parish or country where First
Communion wasn’t celebrated on a regular basis as it is here.
Regardless we welcome these children to the table of the Lord,
and we thank our RE staff and catechists who prepared them.
Speaking of First Communions, next weekend we celebrate
Corpus Christi Sunday, the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of
Christ. I encourage all of our children who recently made their
First Communion this past month to wear their First Communion
dress or suit to Mass again next Sunday. Why wear it only
once and then hang it in the closet? Let’s highlight the significance
of the Eucharist to our lives. In fact, why don’t we ALL
wear our “Sunday best” next week (and every Sunday, too?).
Explore for High School Boys: The annual Explore retreat
for young men in high school is June 11-13 at St. Mary’s Seminary.
It is an opportunity to explore seminary life and learn
about the call to holiness and priesthood. The retreat will consist
of music, games, faith sharing, fellowship, outdoor activities,
prayer and much more. Explore is facilitated by seminarians
studying for the Archdiocese. Cost is $80, but we have a
parish fund to assist those in need. Registration materials are in
the front office or in the Youth Ministry offices.
Disaster relief: We continue to pray for our neighbors in
Oklahoma recovering from the recent tornados. For those wishing
to make a donation, please do so through Catholic Charities
of Oklahoma City at www.catholiccharitiesok.org. Some have
also asked about ongoing support for the people of West,
Texas after the explosion earlier this month. The Diocese of
Austin has requested donation through Catholic Charities of
Central Texas at www.ccctx.org/programs/disaster.
Parish Pilgrimages: We are considering two parish pilgrimages
in the future. The first would be later this year to Italy to
mark the end of the Year of Faith and a chance to attend a Papal
audience with Pope Francis. It’s a 9-day trip and includes
day trips to Venice, Padua, Florence and Assisi, plus several
days in Rome itself. Cost would be approximately $2,890 and
includes airfare, taxes, fuel surcharges, and tips. Includes hotels
(double occupancy), transportation, two meals a day
(breakfast and dinner), local guides, daily masses, etc. We are
looking at early to mid November, likely around Nov. 6-14.
The second trip is for 2014 in June (dates to be determined,
but after school is out) for the Marian Shrines in Spain and
France. Highlights will include visits Lourdes and Fatima. Also
stops along the way at Santiago de Compostela, Salamanca,
Burgos, Zaragoza, Monteserrat, and Bacerlona, with an option
of including Paris if there is interest. This would be a longer trip
(13 days), but include the usual flights, hotels, guides, masses,
etc. Price not yet determined. Let Stacie McKay know
(smckay@ctrcc.com or at ext. 105) as we need to book soon if
there is enough interest, especially for the Italy trip in November.
As always these trips are open to everyone, not just CtR
members. Spread the word to friends and neighbors.
RE registration: Finally, this Friday, May 31 is the final day
for early registration for Religious Education for this coming fall.
If you’ve put it off now is the time to register your child for RE
classes. It only takes a minute so don’t delay!
Peace, Fr. Sean

LITURGICAL MUSIC
Te Deum
Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy
Trinity. As the title indicates, this is an especially solemn
feast in the church year. We celebrate the love of God that
continually surrounds us.
In our hymns and Psalms today we sing in praise of
God in three persons. Our closing hymn is no exception,
and it is well known and especially loved by Catholics: Holy
God, We Praise Thy Name. This hymn and its tune have
been around for a couple of hundred years, first sung in
German and then translated into English in the 19 th century.
Those of us who are a “certain age” remember this as one
of the few hymns we could sing in English before Vatican II.
It was used in devotional services, mostly at the end of
benediction.
Holy God, We Praise Thy Name is a free translation of
the Te Deum, a great hymn of praise written in the 4 th century.
The Te Deum is sung during the Liturgy of the Hours
and is such a magnificent text that many composers have
set it to music throughout the centuries. You have very
likely heard one or more settings of the Te Deum, and you
will sing one today at the close of our liturgy.
Since it is an important part of our Catholic heritage, I
try to include Holy God in our hymn schedule a couple of
times a year, usually on Christ the King Sunday and on
Trinity Sunday. The last verse is fitting to send us forth as
we celebrate the Most Holy Trinity:
Holy Father, Holy Son,
Holy Spirit, three we name thee;
While in essence only One,
Undivided God we claim thee;
And adoring, bend the knee,
While we own the mystery.
Another reason I love this hymn is that everyone seems to
really sing it – enjoy!
Peace and love,
Bridget Wenk
The Adult Choir will have its final rehearsal for the season
this coming Thursday. We sing Sunday at 9:00 for the
Feast of Corpus Christi before taking a couple of summer
months off. Rehearsals for the fall begin on August 15.
TRINITY SUNDAY
The Solemnity of LITURGY the Most Holy Trinity celebrates
the mystery of the three persons in one God, Father, Son
and Holy Spirit. It is one of the greatest mysteries in the
Church. The Trinity though three persons, remains one
God.
The Trinity is celebrated in all we do as Christians
especially in the Church which is Trinitarian in origin, form
and destiny. That means the Church originated from the
Trinity, is formed in the image of the Trinity and is destined
to return to the Trinity. Today, we are all baptized in
the name of the Blessed Trinity and we use the Trinitarian
formula in our prayers and liturgy (see Matt 28:19).
In the fourth century AD, there was a controversy
in the Church regarding the real nature of Christ. This
controversy was generated by a man named Arius, what
is now known as Arianism, denying the full divinity of
Christ. The Church convoked the Council of Nicea in 325
where they condemned the Arian heresy and proclaimed
Christ equal with the Father by proclaiming the dogma of
the Blessed Trinity. To stress the doctrine of the Trinity,
the Council Fathers composed prayers and hymns that
were recited on Sundays as part of the Divine Office. This
council also created the original version of the Nicene
Creed that we recite each Sunday (more formally known
as the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed). These prayers
and hymn began to be celebrated on the Sunday after
Pentecost. In 1334 AD, Pope John XXII made the solemnity
of the Holy Trinity a universal celebration as we have
it today.
Today’s solemnity, calls us to imitate the unity
that exists among the three persons of the Trinity. The
Trinity is sustained by love and we must learn to sustain
our relationships with that same love. Despite our individual
differences and backgrounds, we should be united in
all we do. As the psalmist says, “blessed be the people
the Lord has chosen to be His own”. Let us remember
with confidence in God the Father who created us to enjoy
His wonderful love. In the Son, the Word, through
whom all things were created, who later became flesh
and redeemed us and in the Holy Spirit the sanctifier and
teacher who enables us to cry “Abba Father” with hope to
the God who created us in His image. God loves you.
Grace and peace be with you,
Right to Life
The right to life is the first among human rights. To abort a
child is to kill someone who cannot defend himself.
~ Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, former Archbishop of
Buenos Aires (now Pope Francis), Sobre el cielo y la
tierra (On heaven and earth), 2011
We must never tire of clarifying misunderstanding and shedding
light where there is myth and confusion, demonstrating
empathy and compassion and a deeper vision. Our task is to
present the truth with civility, empathy and clarity. Being champions
of the Gospel of Life is about building a civilization of
love. ~ Cardinal Seán Patrick O'Malley, O.F.M. Cap.,
