CHRIST THE REDEEMER CATHOLIC CHURCH
HOUSTON, TEXAS June 2, 2013
Dear friends in Christ,
Today is the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Jesus
Christ, or as we more commonly call it Corpus Christi Sunday.
The Eucharist is the life of the Church and today we call to
mind the great gift of Christ’s own body. When Christ surrendered
his spirit on the cross, water and blood flowed from his
side and the great outpouring of the Body and Blood was made
complete. We celebrate that gift every time we gather at the
table of the Lord.
A few years ago I printed in this space an August 2004 article
from the Texas Catholic Herald from then-Bishop Joseph A.
Fiorenza. I saved it in my files because I thought Bishop Fiorenza’s
words were so powerful and true. Please indulge me
again as it seems appropriate to revisit them today as we celebrate
the Body and Blood of our Lord. The bishop wrote:
“When I was ordained a priest 50 years ago, the frequent
reception of Holy Communion was not a universal practice.
Many people who attended Mass every Sunday received Communion
only at Christmas and Easter and a few other special
occasions during the year. The teaching of the Second Vatican
Council emphasized the reception of Communion as central to
the conscious, active and fruitful participation in the celebration
of the Eucharist. As this teaching of the Council became better
known and understood, more and more people began the reception
of Communion at the Sunday Eucharist.
The large number of Catholics who receive Holy Communion
is one of the great benefits of the Second Vatican Council.
As with many important benefits in life, we can become too
casual about receiving the Body and Blood of Christ and not be
properly disposed to receive this invaluable gift of the Redeemer
into our lives. We are often so casual that almost automatically
we process to receive Communion without thought or
realization of this magnificent moment by which we enter into
the holiest of union with Jesus. Sometimes, our all too casual
approach is evident in the inappropriate clothes we wear. (I am
astonished each time I see adults wearing shorts to Mass and
to Communion).
The instruction which directs that we bow reverently before
receiving the Host and partaking of the cup, is a very helpful
reminder that we are about to enter into a most sacred moment
in which we eat and drink the Body and Blood of Jesus. We
must not do this perfunctorily but in a deliberate manner to acknowledge
the true presence of Jesus in the Eucharistic Food
we are about to receive. Our genuflection before the tabernacle
is a gesture of faith which proclaims what we believe about
the Eucharistic Jesus. These bodily signs help us to be aware
that we must not be casual with the greatest gift Jesus has
given as a living memorial of His death and resurrection
Before the distribution of Holy Communion, as the priest
presents the Sacred Host to the congregation, we say, “Lord, I
am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall
be healed.” [Note: With the revision to the Roman Missal 18
months ago these words have been changed to reflect the
words of the centurion in Matthew 8:8, “Lord, I am not worthy
to have you enter under my roof, but only say the words and
my soul shall be healed.” The meaning remains the same.]
This is a public acknowledgement that we sinners are not worthy
to receive the Body and Blood of Jesus, and we plead that
the powerful graces of Holy Communion will heal the weakness
of our frail and weak human nature. Holy Communion is
so sacred, however, that the Church reminds us of the warning
of St. Paul that we must not receive the Body and Blood of the
Lord “in an unworthy manner” and be “guilty of profaning” the
Eucharist. “Let a man examine himself and so eat of the bread
and drink of the cup”. (1 Cor. 11, 27-29). Anyone conscious of
a grave sin must receive the sacrament of penance before receiving
Holy Communion. Perhaps, in our all too casual approach
to receiving Holy Communion we have not given appropriate
and sufficient consideration to whether or not we are
guilty of grave sin.
We can never be completely worthy to receive Jesus in Holy
Communion. With God’s grace we can become less unworthy.
We have daily sins, but these venial sins should not keep us
from receiving the Eucharist. In fact, the devout reception of
Communion can cleanse us from past sins and preserve us
from future sins. “As bodily nourishment restores lost strength,
so the Eucharist wipes away venial sins. By giving himself
to us Christ revives our love and enables us to break our disordered
attachments to creatures and root ourselves in
Him” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 1393-94).”
Let’s take Bishop Fiorenza’s words to heart and examine
ourselves as we come to the table of the Lord. Does the manner
of our dress reflect the worthiness of what we are receiving?
Yes, even in summertime when it is hot outside we still
need to take care that the clothes we wear to Mass are appropriate
for coming to the feast of the Lord. Am I participating
fully and joyfully, or just going through the motions? Have I
reflected on my need of God’s mercy and forgiveness, and
have I forgiven others who have trespassed against me? Do I
acknowledge the presence of the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament
by word, gesture and action? All of these questions are
good “food for thought” as we come forward to receive the
“food of everlasting life.”
Recall as well that our celebration of the Eucharist does not
simply end when Mass ends. We carry that Body and Blood in
our life throughout the week. When we live as a Eucharistic
people it makes a difference in our lives. We are to live as one
who has been redeemed. We carry Christ within us so that we
can go and be Christ for others. “Become what you receive,”
as St. Augustine says. We also have the great blessing at CtR
to be in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament of Jesus 24
hours a day in our Adoration Chapel so that we might continue
to cherish the gift of the Mass throughout the week. In addition,
today at 1pm in the church we’ll celebrate the beautiful practice
of Adoration and Benediction. Come join us in prayer for this
ancient yet ever-new way to honor the Real Presence of Jesus
in the most holy sacrament of the altar.
Finally, it is a long standing practice of our archdiocese that
the entire weekly offertory collection of Corpus Christi Sunday
from every parish is given to St. Mary’s Seminary to support
the training of seminarians. Just yesterday a new priest, Fr.
Sebastine Okoye was ordained for the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston,
and Fr. Iván Ascensio, who served at CtR, was
ordained a priest for the Diocese of Dallas. We give thanks to
God for the training they received at St. Mary’s Seminary
through your support and prayers.
Peace, Fr. Sean

LITURGICAL MUSIC
Corpus Christi Sunday:
Singing during Communion
As we celebrate the Most Holy Body and Blood of
Christ today, it is fitting that we focus on the Communion
Rite. This part of the mass begins with the Lord’s Prayer
and includes the Rite of Peace and the Fraction Rite (the
Eucharistic Bread is broken as the Agnus Dei is sung).
Then, of course, is the reception of Communion.
When I made my First Communion (before Vatican II) I
was taught that Communion was a very personal, introspective
time. I was to receive the Body of Christ (no one
except the priest received from the cup back then) and then
return to my pew in silent prayer giving thanks for Jesus’ gift
of himself in the Eucharist. The choir would be singing
something lovely during this time. At my first communion it
was Jesus, Jesus, Come to Me.
Then came Vatican II. The liturgy was to express more
deeply the many layers of meaning in the Communion Rite.
And so we read in the General Instruction of the Roman
Missal (GIRM): “While the priest is receiving the Sacrament,
the Communion chant [or song] is begun. Its purpose is to
express the communicants’ union in spirit by means of the
unity of their voices, to show joy of heart, and to highlight
more clearly the ‘communitarian’ nature of the procession to
receive Communion.” (no. 86) While some singing may be
done by the choir alone, “the singing of the people should
be preeminent.” (Sing to the Lord, no. 189)
The GIRM goes on to state that the priest and faithful
should spend some time praying privately after the distribution
of Communion is finished.
“As a processional piece, the Communion chant or
song presents particular challenges.” (Sing to the Lord, no.
192) You may notice that we almost always use songs with
refrains at Communion. This way, people can continue to
join in on the refrain of the song while moving in procession
to receive the Body and Blood of Christ. When returning to
your seat, our worship aids make it easy to continue singing
on both the refrain as well as the verses of the song until
everyone has received. Then we pray quietly together.
Peace and love,
Bridget Wenk
All of our choirs will take some time off during the summer,
so there are no choir rehearsals scheduled for the coming
weeks.
THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST
LITURGY
Pope Benedict aptly summed up the meaning of this feast
day in a discourse in 2008 using three key words:
"gathering, walking and kneeling... we gather around the
altar of the Lord, we walk with the Lord and we kneel before
the Lord in adoration."
The Feast of Corpus Christi, or the Feast of the Body
and Blood of Christ, goes back to the 13th century, but it
celebrates something far older: the institution of the
Eucharist at the Last Supper. While Holy Thursday is also
a celebration of this mystery, the solemn nature of Holy
Week, and the focus on Christ's Passion on Good Friday,
overshadows this aspect of Holy Thursday.
In 1246, Bishop Robert de Thoreteof Belgium, at the suggestion
of St. Juliana of Mont Cornillon, convened a
synod and instituted the celebration of the feast. From
Belgium, the celebration began to spread, and, on September
8, 1264, Pope Urban IV issued the papal bull
"Transiturus," which established the Feast of Corpus
Christi as a universal feast of the Church. At the request
of Pope Urban IV, St. Thomas Aquinas composed the
office (the official prayers of the Church) for the feast.
This office is widely considered one of the most beautiful
in the traditional Roman Breviary (the official prayer book
of the Divine Office or Liturgy of the Hours), and it is the
source of the famous Eucharistic hymns "Pange Lingua
Gloriosi" and "Tantum Ergo Sacramentum."
Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI declared that the Year of
Faith would provide the opportunity “to intensify the celebration
of the faith in the liturgy, especially in the Eucharist,
which is the summit towards which the activity of the
Church is directed and also the source from which all its
power flows.” Recognizing this link between faith and the
Eucharist, the Solemnity of Corpus Christi today has been
designated as a “2013 Great Event of the Year of Faith.”
This observance calls for a worldwide Solemn Eucharistic
Adoration.
On this day, Pope Francis will preside over a special
Eucharistic procession and adoration that will extend to
the whole world. This is an opportunity to shift attention
back to the deeper Christian and Eucharistic significance
of Corpus Christi.Christ the Redeemer will gather, walk
and kneel in adoration to our Risen Lord where we cannot
help but experience the total surrender of Jesus’ life and
His love for all of us. (see bulletin for Adoration hour time
in the chapel)
Tantem Ergo;
Down in adoration falling, Lo! the sacred Host we hail,
Lo! o'er ancient forms departing
Newer rites of grace prevail; Faith for all defects supplying,
Where the feeble senses fail.
To the everlasting Father,And the Son Who reigns on high
With the Holy Ghost proceeding
Forth from Each eternally,
Be salvation, honor, blessing, Might and endless majesty.
Amen.
Grace and peace be with you,
Respect Life
The right to life is the first among human rights. To abort a
child is to kill someone who cannot defend himself.
~ Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, former Archbishop of
Buenos Aires (now Pope Francis), Sobre el cielo y
la tierra (On heaven and earth), 2011
We must never tire of clarifying misunderstanding and
shedding light where there is myth and confusion, demonstrating
empathy and compassion and a deeper vision.
Our task is to present the truth with civility, empathy and
clarity. Being champions of the Gospel of Life is about
building a civilization of love.
~ Cardinal Seán Patrick O'Malley, O.F.M. Cap.,
Archbishop of Boston, homily at the Opening Mass
for the 2013
National Prayer Vigil for Life, January 24, 2013
Prayer Intention
That strengthened and nourished by the Eucharist, all
Catholics will pray and work to defend life.
