in M-32 project
GAYLORD —M&M Excavating, 8035
Old State Road, has been quite busy in 1985.
Matt Nowicki, co-owner with his brother
Mark, stated the firm's primary job this
year has been a $2 million project on M-32 in
Montmorency County for the Michigan
Dept. of Transportation (MDOT), involving
3.8 miles of new road construction.
Nowicki also noted they have had a well
house project for the City of Gaylord, as well
as a clay capping project for Montmorency
and Oscoda counties.
"Our work load has been up a bit from last
year," he stated. "All the work is done by
competitive bidding. If there are funds
available from the MDOT, and if they are
spending money, there is more work to bid.
"A lot depends on the federal government,
because it usually foots 90 percent of the bill,
with the state kicking in 10 percent," he
mentioned.
Nowicki said other sources of work includes
sewer and water work, and infrastructure
work for local governmental
units.
Looking ahead to 1986, he mentioned it appears
there will be more money available
for highway improvement.
M&M employs approximately 25 people.
It has been in the greater Gaylord area
since 1972.
APS delivers bundles

GAYLORD — An estimated 18 million
pieces of advertising material will be
distributed by Advertiser's Postal Service
(APS) this year alone.
APS has seen the average number of
pieces per delivery double in the last 10
years, according to Ken Bradstreet, general
manager.
The service, founded by Gordon Everett,
Tony Tranquilla and Jim Coon, made its
first delivery in 1971.
"APS is strictly a delivery system to offer
customers an alternative to mail delivery,"
Bradstreet said.

Ascom filling void for
telecommunications
TRAVERSE CITY — Ascom, Inc. of Northern
Michigan is filling a void in northern
Michigan's market for telecommunications
and sound systems, according to Starr
Garter, office and customer service
manager.
Garter, who with her husband, I-arry, and
two downstate business partners own the
communication contracting company, said
that until their company came to Traverse
City, few companies were serving the area's
need for such services.
"It's an area that people don't cover much
in northern Michigan," she said. "We felt
the need and wanted to fill it and here we
are."

"Telephone has been the really big thing
we've become involved in up here," Garter
said.
Garter said Ascom also did sound reinforcement
work at St. Mary Cathedral in
Gaylord and a sound system for the football
field at Gaylord High School.
Other work done by Ascom of Northern
Michigan includes nurse calls for hospitals,
closed circuit television for monitoring in
hospitals, jails and for security systems, intercoms,
inside paging and school clock
systems.
