A new northern frontier
Forest lands only about 30 percent utilized
By FRANK MICHELS
News Editor
GAYLORD — The forest — northern
Michigan's most valuable resource for
recreation and industry' — could hold the
key to a second lumber boom.
And Gaylord and Otsego County are
situated in the heart of the northern forest in
the Lower Peninsula and the home of US
Plywood, one of the state's major forest industries.
The state Dept. of Natural Resources
believes Michigan's 17.5 million acres of
forest land (about half the land area of the
state) are only about 30 percent utilized.
And Gov. James J. Blanchard has said the
forests have the potential for creating 50.000
jobs in the next 20 years.
Forest industry specialists say the
greatest potential for job development is in
the area of adding value to the raw wood
product.
Secondary manufacturing operations —
such as furniture plants, window and door
plants, and similar plants — create jobs.
And it makes sense to locate these secondary
manufacturing plants in the northern
forest where raw materials are nearby.
IN MICHIGAN 20 percent of the forest
land is state owned, 14 percent federally
owned. 11 percent owned by forest products
companies, and the remainder, about 55
percent, is owned by small land owners.
One of Gov. Blanchard's first acts as
governor was to take aim at forest products
as a "target industry."
One of Blanchard's goals is to attract new
forest products industry' as a means of
diversifying the state's economy and to
make it less dependent on the automotive industry.
And at the same time the needs of the
forest industry must be balanced against
the needs of the public for recreation. The
northern forest, with its lakes, streams,
valleys and abundance of wildlife is also
Michigan's most valuable tourism resource.
People flock to the northern Lower Peninsula
and the Upper Peninsula for vacations
primarily because of the forest and the
recreational opportunities it offers.
Otsego County boasts of having a large
portion of the Pigeon River Country State
Forest within its boundaries. The forest is
the largest undeveloped area in the Lower
Peninsula and is home of the state's wild elk
herd. A great variety of plant and wildlife
can also be found there.
PERSONS WHO want to experience the
solitude of a wilderness forest can still do
that in Otsego County.
Cross country' skiers and hikefs'can experience
nature undisturbed in the Pigeon.
Bear hunters like its swamps.
It may not be evident to the casual
observer, but the Pigeon River Country
Forest is a a second growth forest. It is a
new forest. During the first logging boom in
Michigan the Pigeon River area was totally
logged over.
The Pigeon River Country State Forest is
living evidence that our forest is a
renewable resource. And the forest is a
resource, that if carefully managed and
developed, will provide future jobs in the
forest products industry.
And because of its abundance of natural
resources the forest will also be an asset to
tourism and all residents of the state.
