14B HERALD TIMES Thursday, September 26, 1*B5 Health care poised for old Alpine GAYLORD — After years of vacancy, the three-story Alpine Center main building may have a new occupant in 1988. An unnamed private Michigan firm has signed a purchase offer to buy the building for $500,000 and convert it into a care facility for the elderly. The sale hinges on the firm's acquisition of a certificate of need within 120 days from the Michigan Dept. of Public Health. While the identity of the health care firm has not been disclosed, the firm has "the track record, the expertise and the money" to start the facility, according to Ken Lashuay, director of the Northeast Michigan Council of Governments (NEM- COG). NEMCOG has conducted a marketing plan to sell the county-owned center. The health care firm obtain an option to buy the building in July. The property would include 17 acres immediately around the main building and directly out to Old 27. Three buildings currently used by Otsego County adjacent to the four-level main building will remain for the county's use, I^ashuay said. The county will operate the main heating plant and supply utility services to the health care firm, which could provide about 150 beds for patient care in the main building. If the sale falls through, Lashuay isn't worried. About three other health care firms are interested in the building. "IT'S AMAZING how valuable that building has become all of a sudden," he commented. Because the building is 40 years old, he explained, it is eligible for a wide range of energy credits. "It's a great investment opportunity for developers," he added. "We've had close to 50 people or firms tour the facility." NEM- COG began (he national marketing search last fall. Besides looking at the main building, which formerly housed a center for the developmentally handicapped, visitors from across the country have examined the community. "We just know there's going to be a lot of spin-off from this," he said. "Everyone has been impressed with the area, and they may be back." Walker Brothers enters 15th year GAYLORD - Walker Brothers Truck & Trailer Sales & Service, Inc. is entering its 15th year of service to truckers in northern Michigan. Gaylord Industrial Park's oldest continuing business offers one-stop shopping for anyone in the trucking business. Full repair service is also offered. "We have spent the past 15 years making the statement 'Trucks R' Us' a reality," said Dave Walker, co-owner of the firm with his brother Mickey. "We offer a complete repair shop service consisting of both tractor and trailer repair." Walker's shop mechanics perform everything from major overhauls of Detroit Diesel, Cummins and Perkins Diesel engines to Bee line Laser Beam alignment of tractors and trailers. The parts department features genuine Fruehauf replacement parts and Western Snowplows. The rental department includes Atlas Truck Rental. Rounding out the complete truck service. Walker Brothers ship truck loads from northern Michigan to all parts of the US for Pre- Fab Transit Co. Kitchens & Interiors grows GAYLORD — Kitchen cabinetry and items for the interior of the home are the specialties of Kitchens & Interiors, located at 1622 Dickerson Road. Ed Burke and family began the firm in 1978 as Burke Ceramic and Tile on Illinois Street in Gaylord. It currently employs a staff of 10. Seven different lines of kitchen cabinetry are available at Kitchens & Interiors, along with appliances, ceramic tile, vinyl, carpet and spas. Business is up 50 percent over 1984, and customer and builder referral has been tremendous, the company reports. Kitchens & Interiors is a direct factory outlet, and the Burkes eventually hope to expand its role by distributing to retail dealers of kitchen and interior products throughout— northern Michigan. Construction boosts J&P Heating GAYLORD —J&P Heating & Cooling on Dickerson Road reports business is even better than it was 1984. "This is the best year we have ever had," stated Jerry Phillips, owner. He indicated interest rates and the overall economy have been favorable. Phillips said residential construction was up this year, and he noted a big increase in the demand for Amana efficienty furnaces. "We have been installing these for two years, but this year has gone real well," he added. J&P Heating employs nine people, excluding the office help. In reference to 1986, Phillips concluded, "If we keep going the way we are, there is going to have to be some thought regarding a new building. Many people have indicated they are waiting for 1986 to build their homes."
