i : V 20B HERALD TIMES Thursday, September 26, 19SS Arnold's Propane benefits from growth GAYLORD — Arnold's Propane, Inc., located at 529 Barnyard Boulevard, has had an excellent start-up, according to Lee Arnold, owner. "We have a lot of new business in the building areas," Arnold said. The business opened on July 27. The primary function of the operation, he said, is to set LP tanks or bulk tanks for people who are located off of tbe natural gas mains. Most of this work is in the rural areas, he noted. He gains leads from realtors, plumbing and beating contractors, as well as Gaylord area builders. "We are involved in cylinders for appliances, and from RV vehicles to major heating and wholesale gas loads/' he said "The areas cover commercial and residential, as well as farm home heating." He feels the year has been a good one. "The future looks bright in the Gaylord area, as the growth rate seems to be improving." Arnold employs four people, and hopes to add one or two people for next year due to the increase in business. In Other Woods plans to move GAYLORD — In Other Woods, located 5677 Old 27 South, is co-owned by Larry and Candi Edwards. Larry Edwards said business has been good this year. "We are probably five to 10 percent above normal in sign work, and about normal with regard to the stove business," Edwards remarked. "The sign business-is^the big part," he said. "We've also expanded into sand blasting of wood and etched glass." In Other Woods this fall will be moving to a larger area, a few doors away. The change will offer more room since the business has been doing so well, he said. Edwards feels the stove business should improve, too. "Currently, we have three stoves which are in the range of 90-94 efficient," Edwards emphasized. "They burn the same as a catalytic convertor, and certain standards have to be met." Two clean air stoves have been added to the business this year, he said. "We have added a Kent, which is a New Zealand stove, and a Kanopus stove from Canada. These are both wood burning stoves. "We feature an Italian tile stove which only gives out a small amount of radiation. It absorbs it and evens the heat out." Big D Electrical & Mechanical in 14th year GAYLORD — Big D Electrical & Mechanical Contractors, Inc. has been serving much of northern Michigan since 1972. Charles Dickinson, owner and manager, noted that the business handles commercial, industrial and residential electrical and mechanical work. Thursday, September 24, IMS HERALD TIMES 2IB Sylvan Resort construction boom GAYLORD — Sylvan Resort, east of Gaylord on Wilkinson Road, has greatly improved business over 1964. Bill Topham, general manager, stated, "We are very pleased the way things have been going. The restaurant has been very successful. The hotel is picking up customers and has been full almost every weekend." He also indicated the hotel has been coming on strong with many groups using the facility for conferences and small meetings. Topham said the big success of the 1985 year has been the building of an 18 hole golf course. "Construction should be completed by the end of September, and we are still hopeful for a late summer opening in 1986," he remarked. Building this year has expanded available occupancy at the year-round resort. "The restaurant business is also greatly improved over last year," stated Topham. "We are very happy with this year's activity," he exclaimed. "We have definitely shown a year of growth." Taking aim on 1986, he said, "We are looking for another 20 rooms on the hotel, as well as the addition of our planned pro shop for the golf course. "We also plan on paving the roads coming into Sylvan Resort by next spring or early summer." Dunn's adds Traverse City store GAYLORD — Dunn's Office Supply and Machines, 519 S. Otsego Ave., has had a good year. George Dunn and son Scott Dunn are the co-owners. Business is way up, compared to 1984, George Dunn said. Dunn looks for an even bigger increase in 1986. "All facets of the busines have increased, including the copy machines, cash registers Work continues on new accommodations- Treetops' adopted name for golf course GAYLORD — The new Robert Trent Jones golf course, being created at Sylvan Resort east of Gaylord, has been named "Treetops." William C. Topham, general manager at Sylvan, said, "Following a recent visit to supervise the finishing touches to the course, it was actually Robert Trent Jones that selected the name. He said that the idea came to him in the middle of the night and he called me the next day to suggest it." "Treetops," built into the magnificent, and typewriters," he commented. Dunn's is in the process of adding 1,300 square feet of space. They also recently opened up a branch in Traverse City, a Xerox store. Dunn said the Gaylord store also features Xerox equipment. He added that Xerox computers are expected this year. There is a complete line of office supplies available. Detzler mentioned the summer season this year was extremely good. However, in the First part of the year, Midway's business was down.
