Wickes expands
affordable homes
GAYLORD — Expansion by Wickes Companies
will mean some added services at the
Wickes Lumber Center on Old 27 North.
Bob Gregor, manager of tbe local store,
said that the parent company has experienced
great growth.
"Recently, Wickes as a company has really
expanded," he said, noting the company's
acquisitions of the consumer products division
of Gulf and Western.
The four groups that make up that division
— apparel and hosiery, bedding and
home furnishings, automotive parts
distribution, and manufacturing, have combined
sales of $2.7 billion.
Gregor said that although this change will
have no direct impact on the Gaylord store,
an expansion of the "affordable homes program"
will benefit local customers.
With the expansion, Wickes Lumber
Center will provide more models of the
homes as well as custom computer designs.
Gregor said another plus will be the
availability of bank financing for the
package homes at the store.
He added that new construction for both
residential and commercial projects was up
during the last year and added that a large
increase in tourism was "a very big help to
our business."
"THE BUSINESS climate this year was
definitely on the upswing," Gregor said.
"This has probably been one of the finest
years we've experienced."
The Wickes Lumber Center opened in 1963
as the first Wickes in northern Michigan.
Thirty-five people are employed by the
business.
The Alpine-motif building is one of 240
stores nationwide. That is an increase of 20
stores since last year, with many of the new
stores aquisitions of lumber yards in the
South.
Gregor said the company is always changing
to add new product lines and new innovative
building materials.
"We're always looking at any aspect like
that to make our company more efficient,
serve our customers better and provide
more competitive prices."
Flap Jack Shack chain
grows to new areas
GAYLORD — The Flap Jack Shack is
more than just pancakes, according to
manager John Thomas.
"We have something for everyone," said
Thomas, echoing one of his restaurant's
slogans.
The Gaylord restaurant is one of nine Flap
Jack Shacks in northern and central
Michigan. The company will open new
stores in Lansing and Orlando, FL, early
next year.
Thomas, who has been with the company
since 1977 and at the Gaylord store since
June, also manages restaurants in
Kalkaska and Traverse City.
Thomas said it was a good year at all of
the Flap Jack Shacks
"All the stores did better than last year
he said. "It was a better year all the way
around for us. We are very pleased with it."
Among the selections offered at the
restaurant are a wide variety of pancakes,
including Alaskan sour dough pancakes using
original sour dough from Alaska, and
French pancakes topped with fruit or pecan
sauce, or stuffed with cheese sauce.
Thomas said his staff of 32 also makes cinnamon
rolls, blueberry muffins and pecan
rolls.
He emphasized that breakfast isn't the only
meal served. Their "Flap Burger" topped
with sauteed onions and swiss cheese on
rye bread is a favorite, according to
Thomas, and there are luncheon and dinner
specials including a Friday night all-youcan
eat fish fry.
140-room Holiday Inn busy
GAYLORD — The increase in traveling,
along with the leveling off of gas prices and
decreases in unemployment, has benefited
the Holiday Inn.
Night manager Jack Stutesman said 1984
was a good year for the motel and 1985 has
also been good.
Built by owner Lee Moorhead in 1969 as an
90-unit motel, the Holiday Inn is now a
14flt-room facility that features a Holidome
indoor recreation area.
The Holidome, which opened on
Christmas 1982, features a pool, whirlpool,
sauna, gameroom, shuffleboard and a
leisure area. It is one of 13 Holidomes
among the state's 42 Holiday Inns.
Stutesman, who has worked at the
Gaylord Holiday Inn for five years, said that
July and August are the heaviest months for
motel use.
"Traffic this summer was excellent," he
said. "1985 is as good or a touch better than
1984."
Graham Motors serves large,
small customers with repairs
GAYLORD — Graham Motors, located at
975 N. Center, just south of Wickes Lumber,
repairs large and small motors.
The owner of the business is Tom
Graham. His son, Steve, is the manager of
the Gaylord branch.
Steve Graham stated the business deals
both with motors and generators, up to a
1,000 horse, he said. „ •
"We also rewind and repair motors, including
single and three horse," Graham
added. .
The business opened up in Gaylord on
April 15. "Business has gone real well, and
has picked up considerably since we opened,
be mentioned. "A good portion of the
business has come from many companies in
the area, including our bigger accounts in
US Plywood and Shell Oil."
Next year looks bright. "We may have to
hire a couple of more employees if things go
the way they have," he commented.
East Jordan has the firm's main branch,
which has been in operation for about eight
y< H^stated Gaylord was chosen for the additonal
branch due to its central location.
"Customers had to travel quite a few
mil** from Gaytord to get their work done
before we arrived."
