Later in the day the OVA was re-calibrated and background established at
1.6 ppm. The next activity was the pumping of the sump. The same level of
protection, previously noted, was utilized by the employees. The OVA
readings during this activity were as follows:

The next activity to be monitored involved the shoveling of the sludge in
the sump. Re-calibration of the OVA was not possible due to a low battery.
All activity was stopped and postponed until the next day.
On August 21, 1987, the work activity centered on the shoveling and steam
cleaning of the sump. The level of protection utilized was Level C. The
OVA was calibrated and the background level established at 2.5 ppm. All
employees noted an odor through their respirator at the beginning of the
shoveling activity. Re-adjustment of the respirator face piece alleviated
the problem. The OVA readings during the day were as follows:
