Major shoulder surgery wiped out Luis Jimenez's ’09 campaign before he had even tasted full-season ball, but
he's hit his way to Double-A in two years since, and his journey culminated in a place on the Angels' 40-man
roster. He could have departed as a minor league free agent otherwise, as he was signed in August 2005 out of
the Dominican Rep. The 23-year-old Jimenez swings aggressively at the first fastball he believes he can handle,
but he puts a lot of them in play with authority. He batted .290/.335/.486 with 18 homers in 490 at-bats for
Arkansas this season, and he led the Texas League with 40 doubles, placed second with 94 RBIs and third with
59 extra-base hits. Jimenez might have even more power in store—he slugged 13 of 18 homers on the road—
because Arkansas' home park suppresses power.
Los Angeles Dodgers
Added to 40-man roster: OF Alfredo Silverio, OF Scott Van Slyke
Signed: RHP Will Savage (re-signed)
First baseman/left fielder Scott Van Slyke (a 14th round pick in 2005) led the Southern League in hitting (.348)
and doubles (45) and finished runner-up to Paul Goldschmidt in on-base (.427) and slugging (.595).
Chattanooga teammate Alfredo Silverio, who was signed by the Dodgers as an international free agent, on Nov.
13, 2003 out of the Dominican Rep., led the way with 76 extra-base hits (16 homers, 42 doubles and a minor
league-leading 18 triples) and 289 total bases while batting .306/.340/.532 in 533 at-bats. Scouts like Silverio's
chances to become a reliable center-field option with a chance for all five tools to play at the big league level.
Adding him and Van Slyke to the 40-man roster ensured that they can't depart via minor league free agency.
