The Blue Jays signed Ontario native Luke Willson following a tryout at the Rogers Centre, though he played only
football (tight end) at Rice, where he has two years of eligibility remaining. A 6-foot-6 lefty batter, Willson has raw
power, if not an abundance of baseball experience. He played for the Canadian national junior team in ’08 and
worked out with the Owls baseball team in ’09 before focusing on football.
Lefty Francisco Gracesqui became the first player from Sullivan County (N.Y.) CC to play pro ball. He signed for
$40,000. Gracesqui attended New York's Washington High, just like his older brother Frank, a 32-year-old lefty
who pitches in the Atlantic League (and appeared in seven games for the ’04 Marlins).
Signed by the Blue Jays as a non-drafted free agent on Oct. 11, 2004 out of the Dominican Republic, 24-yearold
Carreno holds a 3.41 ERA and 10.2 K/9 ratio in 24 games -- 23 starts -- for Double-A New Hampshire this
season, but he'll be used a relief role with the Jays.
Speedy outfielder Mastroianni, 25, is batting .266/.353/.382 with three homers, 35 RBI, 28 stolen bases and a
.735 OPS over 509 plate appearances between Double-A New Hampshire and Triple-A Las Vegas this season.
Washington Nationals
Released: OF Rashad Hatcher
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Trevor Holder, C Miguel Perez, 2B Khayyan Norfork, OF Bryce Harper
Reinstated from DL: LHP Sammy Solis, C Devin Ivany, OF Justin Bloxom
Bryce Harper strained his right hamstring in an Aug. 18 game for Double-A Harrisburg. The 18-year-old batted
.256 (33-for-129) with three homers and seven doubles (.395 slugging) in 37 games for the Senators. At a the
more age-appropriate level of low Class A, Harper batted .318/.423/.554 with 14 homers, 17 doubles and 44
walks in 72 games.
Aug. 10-16
A total of 145 draft picks signed minor league deals in this period, including 96 players at the Aug. 15 deadline
and another 11 the day before. That tally does not include the draft picks who signed major league deals,
including the Mariners' Danny Hultzen (No. 2 overall), the Orioles' Dylan Bundy (No. 4) and the Nationals' duo of
Anthony Rendon (No. 6) and Matt Purke (third round). Diamondbacks No. 3 overall pick Trevor Bauer signed a
big league deal in late July and already has reached Double-A.
Arizona Diamondbacks
Added to 40-man roster: LHP Wade Miley
Optioned to Triple-A: SS Tommy Manzella
