Searching far and wide for lefty relief, the Yankees claimed 33-year-old Raul Valdes on waivers from the
Cardinals. He'll have to learn a new pitch or a new delivery because lefthanded batters at the big league level
have hit .327/.377/.602 with four homers in 107 plate appearances versus Valdes.

Dominican bonus baby Michael Ynoa now has as many 60-day disabled list stints in his career as he does
professional appearances: three. He had Tommy John surgery last August, so with the health setbacks (all
related to his elbow) he'll be 20 years old next spring with all of nine innings in the Arizona League to his credit.
Here's a scary thought: Ynoa will be eligible for the ’12 Rule 5 draft if he's not a member of Oakland's 40-man
roster at that time. He has plenty of time to reclaim his faded prospect stock, but having signed for $4.25 million,
Ynoa offers just about the strongest cautionary tale possible of the risks associated with signing and projecting
16-year-old players.
In lighter news, Brandon Allen kept slugging for Triple-A Sacramento and earned his first callup to Oakland. He
belted three homers in 10 games with the River Cats after joining the organization in the Brad Ziegler trade. On
the year, Allen batted .299/.413/.578 with 21 homers in 344 at-bats in the Pacific Coast League. He'll be 26 next
spring.
