OPERA
Renee Fleming: Gifted
versatile and glamorous
BY ELIS KISS
Dressed in designer gowns when performing, she
has acted as a cover girl for a luxury timepiece
and has even had a dessert created in her honor.
Yet it is her vocal versatility and highly engaging
stage presence that make Renee Fleming the
international star that she is.
The American diva is expected in Athens for an
evening of opera at the Herod Atticus Theater on
Thursday, July 3. The concert is part of the Greek
Festival.
From bel canto to lieder, Fleming is a highly
accomplished soprano with a vast repertoire
which reflects her multifaceted artistic capacity
and skill.
In 1998, Fleming gave life to Blanche DeBois, in
Andre Previn’s opera adaptation of Tennessee
Williams’s “A Streetcar Named Desire.”
Meanwhile, her
interpretation
of Jules
Massenet’s
“Thais” is
considered a
landmark
rendering of the
piece.
A classical
soprano
interpreting
demanding
roles in
landmark opera
houses and
concert venues
around the
world, Fleming
Vast range
From bel canto to lieder,
Fleming is a highly
accomplished soprano
with a vast repertoire
which reflects her
multifaceted artistic
capacity and skill
also displays a
touch of the
unexpected: A
fan of Joni
Mitchell when
she was young,
she welcomes
new music and
Broadway
tunes, among
other genres.
In 2003 she lent her voice to “The Lord of the
Rings: The Return of the King” soundtrack. She
has also recorded “O Soave Fanciulla” from
Puccini’s “La Boheme” with soft rocker Michael
Bolton.
Born in Pennsylvania to a family of music
teachers, Fleming grew up in Rochester, New York.
She attended The Juilliard School and earned
degrees from the State University of New York at
Potsdam and the Eastman School of Music. She
was also a Fulbright Scholar in Germany.
The recipient of numerous awards, her most
recent distinction is the prestigious Swedish Polar
Music Prize.
At the Herod Atticus Theater, Fleming will
interpret a variety of arias stemming from
Georges Bizet’s “Carmen,” Jules Massenet’s
“Manon,” Giuseppe Verdi’s “Otello” and Giacomo
Puccini’s “Tosca,” among others. She will be
accompanied by the Athens State Orchestra under
the baton of Victor Pablo Perez.
