Most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> translated works conta<strong>in</strong>ed undesirable omissions,<br />

reductions, ideological adaptations and/or discourses.<br />

The presence <strong>of</strong> obscene words and phrases <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> books conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

riddles, idioms, and phrases for children.<br />

It was alleged that <strong>the</strong> M<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>of</strong> Education coerced <strong>the</strong> committee<br />

which was appo<strong>in</strong>ted for <strong>the</strong> compilation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> titles <strong>in</strong>to <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

certa<strong>in</strong> titles while <strong>the</strong> list was be<strong>in</strong>g drawn up.<br />

2.2.4.1. Voices <strong>of</strong> Dissent aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> Selection <strong>of</strong> Titles<br />

As <strong>the</strong> M<strong>in</strong>istry chose not to <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong> works <strong>of</strong> liv<strong>in</strong>g authors to <strong>the</strong> lists<br />

compiled under <strong>the</strong> title ‘Turkish Literature’ so as not to arouse any k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong><br />

controversy, many people from various fields have expressed <strong>the</strong>ir discontent about<br />

<strong>the</strong> selection <strong>of</strong> works <strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g that it is completely wrong not to <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong> works<br />

<strong>of</strong> such dist<strong>in</strong>guished authors as Fazıl Hüsnü Dağlarca, Yaşar Kemal, Nurullah Ataç,<br />

Sabahadd<strong>in</strong> Eyüboğlu, etc. There are also some people who have claimed that some<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> recommended titles are not worth read<strong>in</strong>g and/or some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m are not suitable<br />

for children.<br />

Writers <strong>of</strong> children’s literature, <strong>in</strong> particular, have <strong>in</strong>dicated that <strong>the</strong>y cannot<br />

comprehend <strong>the</strong> rationale beh<strong>in</strong>d ‘100 Essential Read<strong>in</strong>gs,’ which-<strong>the</strong>y th<strong>in</strong>k-will<br />

lead to <strong>the</strong> impoverishment <strong>of</strong> children’s literature, which is a relatively new genre,<br />

and <strong>the</strong>y all agree that <strong>the</strong> selected titles are not capable <strong>of</strong> address<strong>in</strong>g contemporary<br />

children. For <strong>in</strong>stance, Aytül Akal, a writer <strong>of</strong> children’s books, th<strong>in</strong>ks that such<br />

authors as Pertev Naili Boratav, Tahir Alangu, Kemalett<strong>in</strong> Tuğcu, whose names<br />

appear on <strong>the</strong> lists <strong>of</strong> ‘100 Essential Read<strong>in</strong>gs,’ would discourage children from<br />

read<strong>in</strong>g and blunt <strong>the</strong>ir fantasy worlds. She says that “only contemporary authors<br />

can address today’s children, and <strong>the</strong> expectations <strong>of</strong> children fifty or three hundred<br />

years ago were completely different from those <strong>of</strong> children today. People who<br />
