<strong>Smartphone</strong>s are having a fundamental impact in how we create and consumer digital<br />

information and have become <strong>the</strong> personal remote control for our lives.<br />

More and more UK consumers are using <strong>Smartphone</strong>s; between 58 percent 1 and 64<br />

percent 2 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> UK population now owns a <strong>Smartphone</strong> and most new mobile phone sales<br />

will be <strong>Smartphone</strong>s.<br />

Smart mobile devices (<strong>Smartphone</strong>s and tablet computers running mobile operating<br />

systems) have transformed <strong>the</strong> way in which we create and consume digital information and<br />

rarely leave our sides. They have, and are continuing to, replace o<strong>the</strong>r consumer digital<br />

equipment including personal computers, laptops and notebooks, televisions, gaming<br />

devices / consoles, satellite navigation devices and personal music players. Mobile is now<br />

<strong>the</strong> most popular way to send and receive emails with Apple iOS being <strong>the</strong> most popular<br />

email client 3 and according to figures from IDC PC sales are declining, with global sales<br />

falling 14 percent in <strong>the</strong> first three months <strong>of</strong> 2013. 4 An average UK <strong>Smartphone</strong> owner may<br />

have <strong>the</strong> following experience during a typical day.<br />
