Introducing John’s Steaks. Located in Margate at the
corner of Adams and Ventnor Avenues—formerly the
location of Rita’s Water Ice—John’s Steaks is a walk-up
steak shop, reminiscent of the legendary Geno’s Steaks
(or, if you’re so inclined, Pat’s Steaks) in Philadelphia.
With a great location and an already loyal clientele, the
Liccios are bound to be busy this summer. Add to that
the fact that John’s Steaks will be open late (closing will
be at 3am seasonally) and offer beach deliveries, and I
can’t imagine that the Liccios will have a moment free
this summer.
With two walk-up counters—one for fries and soda and
the other for steaks and sandwiches, including fish
cakes, hot dogs and pulled pork—John’s Steaks boasts
outdoor seating under a canopy as well as good prices—
steaks average $7, hotdogs $2.
If you’re a Johnny’s Café & Martini Bar fan and you’re
worried that any of this will be affecting the Liccio’s
other restaurant, don’t be. Not only have the Liccios
branched out with John’s Steaks, but they’ve also
extended Johnny’s Café & Martini Bar by 1000 square
feet while overhauling much of their interior, including
the floors, bar, colors and light fixtures.
With all of this going on, it’s hard to imagine that
the Liccios never intended to open one of the most
successful restaurants in Margate, which they did in
2007 with the opening of the original Johnny’s Café &

The Liccios Are At It Again...
An Expanded Johnny’s Café & Martini
Bar and The Opening of John’s Steaks

In fact, when the Liccios originally went into business
here in South Jersey, they weren’t planning on a full
scale dining establishment at all. John Liccio, who had
spent years in the pastry business, from Litto’s Bakery
and Isgro’s Bakery in the Italian Market section of
Philadelphia, to his own bakery, Lucia’s, in Washington
Township, planned to build upon that experience.
Cookie’s and Cream, which opened in 2005, was the
result.
As an ice cream and pastry shop at 7303 Ventnor
Avenue in Ventnor, Cookie’s and Cream was a big hit.
Yet the seasonal ebb and flow of customers inspired
John Liccio, in 2006, to try his hand at something new…
breakfast. Dinner followed shortly afterwards, and by
the end of 2006,
the Liccios closed
down for a month
to renovate.
Re-opened in
February 2007 as
Johnny’s Café &
Martini Bar, the
Liccios quickly
built up such a
loyal following
