By Ken Calemmo and Kristine Kodytek By Ken Calemmo and Kristine Kodytek The Miss America organization, the world’s largest provider of scholarships to women, has its roots in Atlantic City. The first “pageant” was held on the beach in 1921. The first hint of what would become of the Miss America competition took place in 1920 when The Businessmen’s League of Atlantic City created a “Fall Frolic” event in late September. The most popular event at the frolic was a parade of young, female beauties who were pushed along The Boardwalk in rolling chairs. Between 1920 and 1921 newspapers along the East Coast were sponsoring local beauty contests in which winners were chosen by photograph submissions. Fittingly, The Businessmen’s League invited all the winners of the contests to the 1921 Fall Frolic to participate in Atlantic City’s very own “Inter-City Beauty” Contest. The Inter-City Beauty competition was comprised of a popularity contest and a beauty contest. Eight finalists from cities in the Northeast competed including: Miss Newark, Miss Camden, Miss Washington, D.C., Miss Ocean City, Miss New York City, Miss Pittsburgh, Miss Philadelphia and Miss Harrisburg. Miss Atlantic City, Ethel Charles, was the hostess of the beauty contest, which began the tradition of Miss Atlantic City participating annually as the hostess of the Miss America Pageant. In 1921, one hundred thousand people came to The Boardwalk to watch the competition! Margaret Gorman of Washington, D.C., was named the winner of both the popularity and beauty contests and was awarded $100. Rumor has it, when Gorman, the “Most Beautiful Bathing Girl in America,” returned to Atlantic City in 1922 to defend her title, she showed up draped in the American flag and was affectionately called “Miss America.” The Miss America Pageant has come a long way since its simple, sandy beginnings. But, it continues to be one of the most beloved and recognized traditions in America. Contestants now represent their respective states (and Puerto Rico) and compete for scholarship prizes to fund their educational endeavors. The beautiful, charming and talented young ladies are judged in six categories: Personal Interview, Talent, Lifestyle & Fitness in Swimsuit, Evening Wear and Onstage Question. The woman crowned Miss America Atlantic City.... A Place We Call Home travels approximately 20,000 miles a month, changing location every 24 to 48 hours. She tours the nation to support her ideals, committed to public service. For the last eight years, the Miss America Pageant has been held in January in Las Vegas at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. Finally, in 2014, the Miss America competition will be returning home to Atlantic City, NJ! The Miss America competition will be a 13-day event following Labor Day weekend. There will be three nights of Preliminary Competitions on September 10, 11 and 12. The ever popular, “Show Us Your Shoes Parade,” will be held on The Boardwalk on September 14.
