The legendary Philadelphia Magazine, which we have always respected and often sought to emulate, has come under fire recently following a controversial March cover story entitled “Being White in Philly”, which was blasted by Philly Mayor Michael Nutter and panned by critics alike. If this was a foul ball, Philly Mag definitely struck out in its April issue when an article about a marine sniper entitled “The War Within” was revealed to be a fabrication and the magazine took the step of “unpublishing” the story and issuing an apology, admitting that they “blew it” after being duped by the dubious subject of the story. For our money, they should also issue an apology for the thinly veiled hit piece they did on South Jersey magnate George Norcross, who has in the past and continues to perform wonders for the severely impoverished City of Camden and most recently has lent his support to its long forgotten school children. Atlantic City would be lucky if Mr. Norcross decided to land his helicopter in our neck of the woods… Atlantic City has long been a stomping ground for gangsters dating back to the historic summit of organized crime leaders who converged on The Boardwalk in 1929 for the now infamous Atlantic City Conference. At the time, it was cigar chomping mob elites like Al Capone, Lucky Luciano, Meyer Lansky and Frank Costello who came to town to work and play. Decades later, Atlantic City was home to notorious mob boss Nicodemo “Little Nicky” Scarfo and his nephew Philip “Crazy Phil” Leonetti who lived on Georgia Avenue in the city’s Ducktown section. In the early 90’s, Salvatore “Sammy The Bull” Gravano even used Atlantic City as a hide-out while ducking the FBI in New York who sought to arrest him in the case that ultimately brought down mob boss John Gotti. But when rumors began to circulate that Irish mob boss Whitey Bulger, who was #2 on the FBI’s Most Wanted List behind Osama Bin Laden, may have been lamming it in our area, many ears perked up as a hefty $2 million reward was out there for anyone who could bring Bulger to the FBI. Reported local sightings of Bulger began to circulate and reports were that the mob legend was spending his time on the golf course. Fast forward to April 2013 and the infamous Whitey Bulger was now behind bars in a Massachusetts lock-up after being captured in Santa Monica, California which by all accounts is a far cry from Atlantic City, but the rumors of Bulger being in our area persisted. How could this be? Did Whitey utilize a body double like Saddam Hussein? The Boardwalk Journal decided to hunt for this mysterious figure and low and behold, we found him at of all places, the Mays Landing Golf and Country Club wearing a black leather jacket and a head full of white hair neatly combed back. Sure enough, this imposing figure bore a striking resemblance to the infamous Bulger. It was none other than Doug Fraser, the Vice President of The Mays Landing Golf and Country Club. Stay tuned to this story, it is far from over …
