Grandma walking for others
By GERALD GREEN
Three years ago the
family of little Jada Bascom
searched the world
over before finding a
single donor in Germany
for bone marrow that
matched hers.
On Nov. 28, 2007, when
she was seven months old,
Jada underwent a transplant
using bone marrow
from that donor – a 30year-old
man – in hopes
it would cure the leukemia
with which she was born.
It worked.
“Today she’s 3, in remission,
off medications
and doing wonderful,”
her grandmother, Jeana
Moore of Spokane, Wash.,
said Monday.
It’s hard to tell whose
story is more amazing,
Jada’s or her 57-yearold
grandmother’s. Not
that they’re similar, just
equally inspiring.
So thankful is the
grandmother that a lifesaving
donor was found
for her only grandchild,
she’s making a solitary
cross-country walk to call
attention to the need for
people willing to donate
bone marrow and/or blood
cells that will produce
marrow.
“Out of gratitude for
our blessings, we wanted
to help others,” Ms. Moore
said during a stop at the
Clinton fire station. “Today
two out of ten (leukemia
victims) will find a
donor. Eight will die.”
Ms. Moore is trying
very hard to change those
odds.
“It took two months
to find Jada’s match,”
she said. “We were really
lucky. Other families
have waited a year. Others
have waited until their
loved one was too weak
to receive the donation.
Others have waited until
their loved
one died.
“If we can
increase the
pool of eligible
donors,
we can help
people find
a match for
their loved
ones. So I
decided to do
the walk.”
Ms. Moore
started Oct.
19, 2009, in
Seattle.
“I walked
to Los Angeles,
turned
east and now
I’m in Clinton,”
she said.
“I’m on my
way to New York City.”
So far she’s walked over
2,600 miles.
“We’ve recruited over
2,000 donors, and we’re
working on more than
100 bone marrow donor
drives,” she said. “We
work in conjunction with
the recruiter for the National
Marrow Donor
program in each region I
walk through.”
The recruitment effort
is a family affair, but it’s
the gray-haired grandmother
who’s doing the
hard work.
“I walk alone,” she said.
“No car follows me. I rely
on people’s generosity for
my food and my housing,
and the American people
have been wonderful. I
haven’t gotten hungry,
and I usually find places
to sleep.”
When it’s too far between
towns to find a motel,
she sleeps along the
way in a tent and sleeping
bag that she carries in a
backpack as she walks.
The backpack weighs 35
pounds.
But she’d rather talk
about the
need for donors
– and
how easy
the process
really is
– than herself.
“It’s so
s i m p l e , ”
she said. “It
just takes a
cheek swab
to become a
donor.”
Prospective
donors
can even do
the swab
themselves
in the privacy
of their
homes, using
a kit
the national Be-the-Match
Registry will send them.
The easiest way to contact
the registry is through
the Bascom-Moore family
Web site.
It’s www.stepstomarrow.com.
When people
enter that on their computer,
they need to click
on “Make a Difference.”
That should take them
to a form which will take
about 10 minutes to complete.
Once that’s done, the
registry will send them a
swab kit.
Ms. Moore said there
are other ways to contact
the registry but this is the
easiest because the kit is
free, thanks to donations
her family has been able
to obtain through its Jada
Bascom Foundation, a
501(c3) tax-exempt organization.
“I would encourage
people not to wait,” she
said. “The recipient who’s
an indicator that her
blood was not clotting.
They did tests and determined
her platelets
were low; that was the
with leukemia.
“By the time she was
five months old, she
already had had four
needed a bone marrow
Everybody in the family
Next, Jada’s name
was entered on the
national Be-the-Match
Registry.
“No one in the U.S.
matched, so they put her
on the international registry,”
said Ms. Moore.
“We found her match
– one person in the
world, the 30-year-old
man from Germany.”
Once a match is found
for a person’s marrow or
blood cells, Ms. Moore
said the donor is given
five shots of a drug
which helps produce
more of the marrowproducing
For 75 percent of the
donors, the actual donation
process is much
like donating plasma at
a regular blood drive,
The other 25 percent
that’s a slightly more
“You’re asleep,” explained
Ms. Moore.
Blood in urine not always bad sign
Few health symptoms
are as unsettling as blood
in the urine.
Should a person freak
out? Not necessarily. The
technical term for the
condition is “hematuria,”
and experts at the University
of Wisconsin School
of Medicine and Public
Health say it’s likely the
result of one of several
health conditions, only
one of them serious.
“The first thing I’d say
to a patient is, ‘Don’t panic,’”
said Dr. Jeremy Smith,
an internist and assistant
professor of medicine at
UW. “The majority of the
time, blood in the urine is
It could, however, be an
indication of several annoying
health conditions,
including a urinary tract
infection, a kidney stone,
an enlarged prostate
gland or some kind of minor
injury to the bladder
or kidney — maybe even
caused by something as
innocuous as vigorous
exercise.
A handful of simple
tests can usually shed
light on the situation.
the hematuria work-up is
that it’s pretty standard,”
said Dr. Tracy Downs, a
bladder-cancer surgeon
with the UW Carbone
Comprehensive Cancer
Center and an associate
professor of urology at
UW.
The process can involve
simple urinalysis, a CT
scan, or a cystoscopy, a
procedure in which physicians
insert a small camera
into the bladder.
If the hematuria is
caused by an infection
— this is more commonly
found in women than in
men — antibiotics can
usually resolve it.
In a handful of cases,
the cystoscopy may reveal
the one medically
concerning condition for
which hematuria is also a
symptom: bladder cancer.
Only about 10 percent
of hematuria cases are
linked to cancer, and it’s
more common in patients
over age 50.
“Blood in the urine can
definitely be a red flag for
cancer,” said Downs. “For
some patients it’s one flag,
while for others it’s one of
two or three flags.”
Unfortunately, the recurrence
Downs calls “the dandelion
In the small number of
it with an internal
an external pouch.
Afghan conflict not winnable war?
By BYRON YORK
Gen. David Petraeus
sailed through Senate
confirmation so quickly
in late June few people
noticed what he had to
say about his new job as
commander of U.S. forces
in Afghanistan.
Petraeus told the Senate
Armed Services Committee
American forces
face many more battles
against a determined and
resilient Taliban. “My
sense is that the tough
fighting will continue,”
Petraeus said. “Indeed, it
may get more intense in
the next few months.”
But Petraeus said that
as the fighting increases
— and American casualties
rise — the public
should remember that
“progress is possible” in
Afghanistan. Petraeus
knows that’s true, he explained,
because he has
seen it.
“For example, nearly 7
million Afghan children
are now in school as opposed
to less than 1 million
a decade ago under
Taliban control,” Petraeus
said. “Immunization rates
for children have gone up
substantially and are now
in the 70 to 90 percent
range nationwide. Cell
phones are ubiquitous in
a country that had virtually
none during the Taliban
days.”
It was an extraordinary
moment. Americans overwhelmingly
supported the
invasion of Afghanistan
after the Sept. 11 terrorist
attacks.
In eight and a half
years of war there, 1,190
American service members
have died. And after
all that sacrifice, the top
American commander is
measuring the war’s progress
by school attendance,
child immunization and
cell-phone use.
That sort of nation
building, especially in
a place as primitive as
Afghanistan, has never
been popular with American
voters.
It’s especially unpopular
when combined with
highly restrictive rules of
engagement that have tied
the hands of the nearly
100,000 U.S. troops in
Afghanistan, exposing
them to danger from an
enemy they’re not allowed
to strike.
Petraeus has promised
to review those rules in
light of evidence they have
caused needless American
deaths.
The latest example
came in the Rolling Stone
article that led to the firing
of Petraeus’ predecessor,
Gen. Stanley McChrys-
tal. The article told how
U.S. commanders wanted
to destroy an abandoned
house used by the Taliban
to launch attacks, but were
denied permission. Then, a
23-year-old Army corporal
was killed there.
“Does that make any
sense?” a fellow soldier
asked. “You sit and ask
yourself: What are we doing
here?”
In another scene detailed
by author Michael
Hastings, a soldier confronted
McChrystal about
the rules. “We aren’t putting
fear into the Taliban,”
he told the general.
“Winning hearts
and minds in (counterinsurgency
operations)
is a coldblooded thing,”
McChrystal responded.
“The Russians killed 1
million Afghans, and that
didn’t work.”
“I’m not saying go out
and kill everybody, sir,”
the soldier responded. “You
say we’ve stopped the momentum
of the insurgency.
I don’t believe that’s true
in this area. The more
Put aside the fact that
American leaders in Afghanistan
are unironically
using the phrase “hearts
and minds” — the very
words used to describe
the folly of U.S. policy in
the Vietnam era.
Does the American
public want to continue
a war in which Americans
die because they’re
not allowed to fight back
when attacked, all for
the purpose of increasing
school attendance, child
immunization and cellphone
use?
President Obama’s
deadline to begin withdrawing
U.S. troops in
July 2011 was a topic of
much discussion at the
Petraeus hearing. There’s
disagreement in the Senate
over the timeline, but
the public’s opinion is
clear.
A recent Gallup survey
found 58 percent of
those questioned support
Obama’s timetable, versus
38 percent who oppose.
7 percent say they’re
against the timetable because
withdrawal starts
too late. Add them to the
58 percent who support
withdrawal as scheduled,
and you have 65 percent
of Americans who want
a withdrawal that begins
no later than July of next
year.
Given the dreary assessments
we’ve heard
from Petraeus and
McChrystal, it’s unlikely
any great victories in
Afghanistan will change
those opinions.
This is not a blame-
Obama issue. The first
seven years of the war
were not his doing. But
the decision to leave or
stay in Afghanistan is his
to make.
Near the end of the
Rolling Stone article, one
of McChrystal’s top aides,
Maj. Gen. Bill Mayville,
gave a bleak forecast of
the war’s end.
“It’s not going to look
like a win, smell like a win
or taste like a win,” Mayville
said. “This is going to
end in an argument.”
Pre-teens
need shots
The Oklahoma State
Department of Health
(OSDH) said one measure
parents can take to protect
their children for years to
come is to make sure they
are vaccinated against
life-threatening diseases
such as meningitis, tetanus,
diphtheria, whooping
cough and cervical cancer.
The Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention,
Indian Health Service,
and American Academy of
Pediatrics, along with the
OSDH recommend preteens
and teens get several
vaccines at their 11- or 12year-old
check-up.
If they miss these vaccines
at 11 to 12 years of
age, they should receive
them at their next visit.
The preteen vaccines are:
• MCV4, which protects
against meningitis
and its complications.
• Tdap, which is a
booster against tetanus,
diphtheria, and pertussis
or “whooping cough.”
• HPV vaccine,
which protects against the
types of human papillomavirus
that most commonly
cause cervical cancer and
genital warts.
“Many parents do not
realize that immunity
from some childhood vaccines,
such as those for
tetanus and whooping
cough, declines over time,
so adolescents and teens
need a booster to provide
continued protection,” said
Dr. Lynn Mitchell, chief
medical officer and deputy
commissioner for Prevention
and Preparedness
Services at the OSDH.
Research shows preteens
generally visit the
doctor only when they are
sick. However, depending
on their health and medical
history, some preteens
may require additional
vaccines.
“The preteen check-up
is a great time to talk with
your child’s healthcare
provider about your child’s
development, nutrition,
safety and vaccination status.
It is also an important
time to make sure children
are caught up on childhood
immunizations such as
chickenpox, hepatitis B,
and measles-mumps-rubella
(MMR),” said OSDH
Chief of Immunizations
Don Blose.
Some facts about the
preventable diseases of
pertussis, meningitis and
HPV/cervical cancer include
the following:
• Pertussis, or
whooping cough, is one of
the most common respiratory
diseases in American
teens. It causes a
prolonged cough that can
last weeks or months and
can result in pneumonia
or hospitalization.
Tips listed to give money gift in unique way
By SARA NOEL
Money can be a great gift: The giver knows the recipient
will use it. But giving the gift can be done more
thoughtfully and creatively than simply sticking it in a
card or stuffing it in a plain envelope. Jazz it up by wrapping
it in a more personalized and fun way.
Here are a few fun ideas.
Inside a Book or Calendar: Slip money into various
pages of a book. Use paper clips so it doesn’t fall
out. Or tape money inside of a magazine or onto each
month of a calendar.
In a Box or Tube: Use a cereal box, candy box (M&M
Minis tubes are great for holding quarters), juice box, deck
of cards, etc., as a fun way to wrap a monetary gift.
Place a box inside a box inside a box to disguise it,
or add shredded paper to a shoebox, roll dollar bills
and tie them, and put them in the box, hidden in the
shredded paper.
One reader, Paula from Kentucky, shares: “A couple
of years ago, I got $100 in fives, pulled all the tissues out
of a small, cubed tissue box, taped the fives end to end,
rolled them up, stuffed them in the tissue box and taped a
tissue to the end of the money roll. I made sure the tissue
hung out slightly from the box. I found one of those plain
white labels and wrote: ‘It SNOT your regular tissue.’
Imagine my son’s confusion when he opened his beautifully
wrapped gift and found a box of tissues! I said,
‘I’m sure you could just cry, go ahead and grab a tissue.’
Now, imagine his surprise when he grabs the tissue and
out comes money! Last year, I bought a 100 count box
of security envelopes, put a $100 bill in one, then put it
back into the box with the other envelopes.”
Wrapped in Clothing: Tuck money into items such
as gloves, socks, a hat, shoes or slippers.
Fold It Up: There are many money origami direc-
4-, 6- or 12-Pack Beverages: Tape money onto
bottles of drinks that come in pack carriers. It’s hidden
from plain sight, but can be seen when lifted from
the packaging.
Empty bottles such as Starbucks frappuccino bottles
and their cardboard carriers can be decorated and filled
with candies and small gifts, including money.

DOT issues sign warning
In recent years, political candidates have been
cooperative with obeying state law by not placing
campaign signs on public rights of way.
With this year’s large primaries, the Oklahoma
Department of Transportation has issued a reminder
to candidates to continue complying with the state
law by not posting signs illegally.
State statute prohibits these signs on highway
rights of way or on overpasses.
Posting signs next to traffic may be tempting, but
the volunteers who place them — and those who clean
them up — could be put in harm’s way, according to
ODOT.
Signs in rights of way also can be distracting to
drivers. Transportation officials said by educating
volunteers, candidates can promote safety.
THOSE
WERE
THE DAYS
420 W. 6th (Cordell)
Large Lot, Great Investment or
Rental Property..............$18,000
By Tony Ashcraft
It was time for the football dance following our
sophomore year, and what a time it was.
I rode to the dance with Mike Martin and his
date, Laura Winchester, in his blue 1969 Camaro
with a six-banger engine.
Songs like “One Man Band” and “Pieces of April”
by Three Dog Night were playing on the radio. They
were the hot band of the times.
When I arrived at Ranette’s house, her father,
Randal, escorted me. Ranette looked lovely in her
dark blue, short skirt with white collar and black
hose and black shoes. She had her hair done up
with more curls than normal.
I felt a little nervous, because most of my dates
were a little less refined than Ranette — which is
not to take anything away from those other girls.
I was just getting to go out with a better date than
normal.
We were already on the dance floor when the
seniors came into the dance, one at a time, with
their dates and joined the movement on the dance
floor.
Mike Osborn came in grooving to the tunes with
Marilyn Moore, E.N. Simon with Lynn Stringer,
Barry Leonard with Linda Martin, and so on.
They made the party, as they were having such
a great time, and it made us sophomores feel like
we were really cool being able to be there in the
celebrations.
The most fun was watching E.N. trying to dance
like the brothers on the team, Ronnie Williams,
Andrew Williams and Lawrence Chatman. He gave
it his best shot and wasn’t half bad, but we all knew
we couldn’t dance like our black teammates.
The time of 11:30 p.m. came all too soon, and
Randal said to have Ranette home by midnight, so
it was time to go.
Mike took us to her house first, and the garage
door was open, so I got out and walked her to the
shadow of the garage overhang, and she turned
back to me, and we stood there in our embarrassment
wondering what was to come next — to kiss
her or not. Yes or no? Should I go for it?
I didn’t do it! One of the most beautiful girls in
the class (still is!) and I choked under the pressure!
What a dummy! Next, we took Laura home, and
Mike kissed her goodnight while I sat in the car
licking my wounds.
At least Ranette and I stayed friends after the
date, but she too thought I was a dummy.
Anyway, it was a great ending to a first semester,
knowing even more and better things were coming
second semester.
Test group rips protein drinks
By the Editors
of Consumer Reports
The promises are enticing.
Whether one is looking
to shed pounds, get a quick
energy jolt, build muscles or
fight aging, some supplement
makers are boosting
protein drinks as a scientifically
proven way to quickly
achieve those goals.
But Consumer Reports’
investigation, including
tests at an outside lab of
15 protein drinks, a review
of government documents
and interviews with
health and fitness experts
and consumers, found most
people already get enough
protein, and there are far
better and cheaper ways to
add more if it’s needed.
Some protein drinks
can even pose health risks
over time, especially at a
consumption level of three
or more servings a day, due
to the potential to consume
harmful heavy metals and
excessive protein.
All drinks in CR’s tests
had at least one sample containing
one or more of the
following contaminants:
arsenic, cadmium, lead and
mercury. Those metals can
have toxic effects on several
organs in the body.
For most drinks CR
tested, levels of those contaminants
were in the low
to moderate range, when
they could be detected at
all.
But with three of the
products, consumers who
have three servings daily
could be exposed to levels
that exceed the maximum
limits for one or two of those
contaminants in dietary
the U.S. Pharmacopeia
voluntary standards for
health products.
Nutritionists and trainers
say they commonly see
people who consume three
servings a day.
The amount of lead in a
single daily serving of eight
of the protein supplements
CR tested would require
that the products carry a
warning in California.
State legislation known
as Proposition 65 mandates
that manufacturers notify
consumers when products
contain toxic substances
at levels the state says
pose even a low cancer or
reproductive risk.
But federal regulations
do not generally require
that protein drinks and
other dietary supplements
be tested before they are
sold to ensure that they
are safe, effective and free
of contaminants, as the
rules require of prescription
drugs.
CR purchased 15 protein
powders and drinks
mainly in the New York
metro area or online and
tested multiple samples of
each for arsenic, cadmium,
lead and mercury. The results
showed a considerable
range, but levels in three
products were of particular
concern:
• Three daily servings
outings against Arkansas
an All-College Classic
“This would be an ambitious
non-conference
schedule for us in any
year,” said Capel, who is
entering his fifth season
at OU. “The fact we have
eight new players makes
DEAR ABBY: When I
was a young teen, my mother
gave me a copy of your
booklet "What Every Teen
Should Know." She left it on
my bed for me to read at my
own pace, and let me know
that I could come to her if
I had any questions, when I
was ready to ask them.
For years that booklet
served as a reference guide
for me. I also lent it to many
of my friends whose parents
were not so forthcoming
with this important information.
Being informed and not
believing urban myths made
a big difference in our decisions
— and we're all doing
well now.
A decade later, I often
work with teens who have
received no comprehensive
education about sex, drugs,
or the impact of decisions
they make during adolescence.
Your booklet remains
an important tool in these
you for your
I am pleased that you
continue to find it useful.
Today many young people
engage in adult activities
at a much earlier age than
the teenagers of previous
generations. That's why it
is so important for parents
to take the initiative and
discuss alcohol, drugs,
sex and FAMILY VAL-
My teen booklet also
contains information on
contraception and sexually
transmitted diseases and
how to recognize them.
It has been distributed in
doctors' offices and used
to promote discussion by
educators and religious
leaders, and is often used
by parents who find it difficult
to discuss sex with
DEAR ABBY: My niece
is being married — again.
This will be No. 5. What
kind of gift would you suggest?
I am out of ideas, as
I'm thinking she already has
everything. The wedding is
DEAR STUMPED: After
because you have already
what you should send her is
your good wishes for a long
Elderly couple debating use
of reverse home mortgage
By BRUCE
WILLIAMS
Dear Bruce: We are
an elderly couple in our
late 60s. My husband is a
diabetic, and our insurance
does not cover much of his
medication, which is very
costly.
In order to afford his
medicine, he wants to take
out a reverse mortgage. He
is telling me that if he dies,
I would be able to stay in
our home until I die or
want to sell.
The home would require
upkeep that I am not able
to do. I do not think this
is the right thing for us.
— Ann, via e-mail
Dear Ann: Are you not
eligible under Medicare
for the prescription help?
It would seem to me that
you should investigate.
Reverse mortgages have
a very definite place. Your
husband is correct when he
says that, even after you’ve
exhausted the money that
the reverse mortgage gives
you, you are allowed to stay,
or, if you wish, to sell.
If the time comes to
sell the house, the balance
borrowed on the reverse
mortgage would have to
be satisfied, whatever remains
would come directly
to you.
Whether this is for you
is another matter. You are
still at the low end in terms
of age, where reverse mortgages
yield a great deal.
Obviously, the older
the person, the more the
amount that the companies
would lend, but as
long as you pay the taxes
and insurance, you are
able to stay in that home
without ever repaying a
nickel. Whether this is
a step that you guys are
comfortable with is a personal
decision.
Dear Bruce: How do I
find out if my father’s name
is on a property deed on the
west side of Chicago?
My sister, late brother
and I were named the
beneficiaries. He had joint
custody of the building
with his live-in girlfriend.
— C.C., via e-mail
Dear C.C.: Go to the
county clerk’s office with
the name and address of
the property, and the legal
description and the owners’
names will appear in their
records.
Weed-free hay program set
State hay growers
have not been able to sell
hay or mulch to contractors
working on federal
construction projects because
Oklahoma had no
program to certify their
products “weed free,” as
required by law.
That will change next
week as a new certification
process goes into
effect.
Created by HB 1583
by State Sen. Ron Justice
and State Rep. Eddie
Fields, the Oklahoma
Weed Free Certification
Program will allow
growers to have their hay
meadows inspected up to
