Weatherford dodges fire disaster
Fire destroyed at least
one mobile home and a car
and did heavy damage to
other possessions Monday
at Weatherford, but firefighters
say it still could
have been much worse.
“With the winds and
weather conditions like
they were, it could have
been a whole lot worse,”
said Assistant Fire
Chief Mike Karlin. “We
were very fortunate to
get it stopped. It was a
good save.”
No one was injured,
and Karlin said that’s
“always a plus.”
was driving; it sustained heavy damage in both the front and rear but Summerford was not
5 vehicles crash on Gary
A five-vehicle pileup on
Gary Boulevard? It happened
Monday afternoon
in the 500 block, just east
of the Clinton fire station.
Capt. Justin Parker of
the Clinton Police Department
said it was a fairly
simple collision. All five
vehicles were in the outside
lane going west and the
lead one slowed for traffic;
the others followed suit, all
except the last one.
Apparently due to driver
inattention, it rammed the
rear of the auto in front of
it, knocking it forward into
the next one, and so on until
all five were involved.
Only one person was
transported from the
scene by ambulance,
and Parker said he was
complaining primarily of
chest pains. That was 68year-old
Forrest Flyingout
of Weatherford, who was
driving the second vehicle
from the lead.
The accident happened at
4:34 p.m. Some Clinton firemen,
including Deputy Chief
Randy Carpenter, had just
returned from helping battle
a large blaze at Weatherford
and immediately began assisting
with traffic control
while Clinton police officers
Gary Kennedy and
Ricardo Hernandez investigated
the mishap.
town not far from West
Elementary School and
the Weatherford Public
Schools bus barn.
Besides the mobile
home and car that were
destroyed, Karlin said another
mobile home, three
other cars and a motorcycle
sustained heavy damage,
and 400 to 600 feet of
wood privacy fences and
an estimated 51⁄2 acres of
grass burned. Two threestory
apartment buildings
were evacuated, as
were an estimated 20
private residences along
N. Fourth Street.
The fire started about
1:30 p.m. at one of the
mobile homes located in
a mobile home park at
Flyingout was transported
by Sinor Emergency
Medical Service.
Parker said the five
drivers, as well as four
passengers divided among
three of the vehicles, all
had seatbelts on. A fifth
passenger, 21 months old,
was properly buckled in a
child car seat.
Efrain Vargas, 19, of
Clinton, was driving the
last vehicle which started
the series of collisions.
He was in a 2000 Accura
and had two passengers,
including the 21-monthold,
Isaiah Vargas. His
other passenger was Marissa
Reeves, 17, also of
Clinton.
The Accura hit the rear
of a small 2007 Chevrolet
passenger car driven by
Duncan Summerford, 62,
of Clinton. It was knocked
into the rear of a 2008
Ford sport utility vehicle
driven by Vaudie Ringo,
71, also of Clinton.
Next in line was a
2006 Ford Ranger pickup
driven by Flyingout, and
the lead vehicle was a
2002 Ford Ranger pickup
driven by Patricia Harris,
60, of Hydro. It was
owned by O’Reilly Auto
Parts and ironically had
large black and yellow
safety markings across
800 W. Davis Ave., east
of Greenwood Cemetery.
Karlin said the ignition
source was discarded
smoking materials left on
a wood porch.
Kurt and Angela Frans
lived in that house, and it
was the one destroyed.
Another next door where
Southwestern Oklahoma
State University students
Cody Tarbet and Trevor
Lowry lived may have to
be totaled as well.
Most of the destroyed
and damaged autos were
at the large Legends
apartment complex,
formerly known as Collegiate
Station.
The wind was out of
the northwest and was
the back tailgate.
Ms. Harris said her
pickup was still moving
when it was struck from
behind.
The two passenger cars
at the rear of the pack appeared
to suffer the heaviest
damage.
Besides the two passengers
in Vargas’ car,
Flyingout had two in
his pickup and Ringo one
in his SUV. They were
Jasper Flyingout, 37,
and William Flyingout,
20, both of Weatherford,
and Emma Ringo, 70, of
Clinton.
Parker said Vargas
stated that he was not
paying attention when
the vehicles ahead of him
began to slow.
A young Elk City man
riding a small 1997-model
motorcycle with bald tires
that was being held together
be duct tape and electrical
night after leading an
Oklahoma Highway Patrol
trooper on a 16-mile chase
at speeds allegedly reaching
140 miles per hour.
The suspect is Jack
Tracy Hammond III, 20.
“Gary was running 140
blowing right towards
the heart of downtown
at a sustained 20 to 25
miles per hour with gusts
exceeding that, said Karlin.
The humidity was
down in the mid-teens,
and for firefighters the
lower the humidity, the
higher the danger.
“West Elementary
School was at the southern
edge of the area we were
concerned about,” said
Karlin. “But we felt the
students were safer there
than they would be trying
to move them. There was a
plan in place, though, if we
did need to move them.”
Karlin said there was
trying to catch him,” said
Lt. Rick Weedon, speaking
of Trooper Gary
Smith of Clinton.
The pursuit started
near the Stafford Road
exit off Interstate 40 east
of Foss and went west into
Elk City, then back out and
east along the south service
road of I-40 until reaching
a railroad overpass west
of Canute. Weedon said
Hammond would have had
tween the mobile home
park and the elementary
school, and that’s where
the 51⁄2 acres burned.
At the trailer park,
besides the house where
Tarbet and Lowry lived,
he said the one west of
the Frans house was also
threatened and there
were six or eight others
at the south end of the
park that likewise were
of great concern.
“The bus barn was in
the immediate path of the
fire,” he continued. “Several
maintenance workers
were moving buses
away from the fence,
getting them into gravel
areas, doing everything
they could to help.”
Private citizens
pitched in too.
“Several residents on
the south end of the area
were out with garden
hoses and shovels, trying
to slow the fire while we
were moving equipment,”
said Karlin. “The Street
Department came in with
a front-end loader. There’s
a ravine behind the bus
barn that a lot of old debris
had been dumped in,
and it caught fire.”
Karlin credited city employee
Kendall Huckaby
with using the front-end
loader to cover up the debris
and lessen the threat
at that location.
Fourth Street was evacuated
all the way south to
Huber Street.
Besides the visiting
firemen and citizens,
Karlin said the WFD also
received help from the
Weatherford Police Department,
Custer County
Sheriff’s Office and Oklahoma
Highway Patrol, all
of whom assisted with the
the south bar ditch, laid his
motorcycle down on its side,
and gave up.
He allegedly told Smith
he was “being stupid and
making bad decisions.”
Two or three Elk City
police officers had also
joined the chase by then as
had Agent Scott Goodman,
The Panhandle report
director.
“I am extremely proud
of the water board staff
for their meticulous work
in developing this totally
farmer, irrigator, and
intelligent and informed
decisions concerning our
most precious natural
resource.”
Strong encourages
those planning to attend
the April 19 meeting
and future meetings
to review beforehand
the draft report and
associated documents
which present 50-year
projections of water
use in the state’s planning
regions, options to
meet forecasted deficits
in supply or related
problems, and dozens of
water policy recommendations
developed by
both Oklahoma citizens
and stakeholders that
will be submitted to the
state legislature upon
the plan’s conclusion in
February 2012.
The meeting in Beaver
will be the first of
13 regional feedback
and implementation
meetings scheduled
Regional Food Bank is
thankful for volunteers
This week is National
Volunteer Week, and the
Regional Food Bank of
Oklahoma issued a
statement to thank the
thousands of Oklahomans
who dedicate their
time to fighting hunger
in the state.
“Volunteers are the
lifeblood of this organization,”
said Rodney
Bivens, executive director
of the Regional Food
Bank. “Because of the
work that volunteers do,
the Regional Food Bank
is able to provide enough
food to feed more than
77,000 Oklahomans
each week throughout
53 central and western
Oklahoma counties.”
Last year, thousands
of volunteers donated
more than 64,000
hours of service, saving
the Regional Food Bank
$1 million in labor. This
year, the nonprofit estimates
that those numbers
will climb to 80,000
volunteer hours.
Volunteers help the
Regional Food Bank
fulfill its mission of
helping the charitable
community through
working in product recovery,
assembly food
K&S TIRES
boxes, at special events
and more.
“Without volunteers,
we can’t get food to those
who need it,” said Bivens.
“Donating a few hours of
your time makes a huge
difference in the life of a
that has proven to be
more difficult than you
thought.
TAURUS (April 20-
May 20) — That hoped-for
opening to present a plan of
yours to someone who could
help make things happen
is likely to occur. Jump on
changes to implement
an important project of his
CANCER (June 21-July
22) — Don’t be reluctant
to stand firm on an issue
about which you have
more knowledge than your
associates. Once things are
explained to them, they
will become enlightened
supporters.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)
— Material situations look
exceptionally good for you,
and there is a better than
average chance that you
will experience some kind
of personal gain. Keep your
eyes and ears open.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov.
THOSE
WERE
THE DAYS
By Tony Ashcraft
A few years before when Kenny Meget and
Phil Dewberry got their pictures in the football
program, I thought to myself that as small as
they were if they could make it so could I.
Phil was the younger of another University
of Oklahoma starter from Clinton, center Glen
“Jeep” Dewberry, but Phil was very small, and
they moved from Clinton before his senior
year.
Meget hung in there and was a real inspiration
to me as a sophomore because I watched
how hard he worked in practice. Even though he
wasn’t as fast as the other ends, he ran precise
pass routes and worked hard at looking the ball
into his hands well.
He was quiet, but did the work without complaining,
and even though he was a backup receiver
to Lawrence Chatman, he still pushed the
starters to make them better.
Finally, middle of his senior season, the coaches
put him into some games, namely against our
huge rivals, Altus, were he caught a long flag
pattern (long down and out pattern) at a very
crucial time in our 9-7 victory.
He had his moment of glory and the utmost
respect of his teammates and coaches. He gave
all he had and I learned from that and that is
how I approached the season.
that most patients are unaware of the dangers of triglycerides.
Triglycerides are a type of fat (lipids) in the bloodstream that
are much like the good cholesterol (HDL) and the bad
cholesterol (LDL).
A normal triglyceride level is under 150. Higher triglyceride
levels have been linked to heart disease, kidney disease and even
pancreatitis. In fact, the risk of coronary artery disease doubles when triglyceride levels are
above 200. High triglycerides are considered a more signiÞ cant risk to women, because higher
levels double a woman s risk of heart disease over men. For diabetics, elevated triglycerides are
common and also increase their already high risk for heart disease.
The Moving Beyond Cholesterol Survey from the National Lipid Association reported that only
13% of patients knew the healthy levels of triglycerides. A majority of physicians surveyed
felt their patients did not understand triglycerides or recognize the difference between them
and cholesterol. Cholesterol particles that also are rich in triglycerides are signiÞ cantly more
dangerous than cholesterol particles with normal triglyceride levels.
Lowering triglyceride levels is similar to lowering your cholesterol; lose weight, eat
fewer calories especially sugar calories, and exercise. There are medications to help lower
triglycerides.
It is very important to know your triglyceride level and, if it is elevated, to make the lifestyle
changes needed to bring it down for your heart s sake.
Red Tornadoes win own tourney
Home course advantage wound up working well
for the Clinton High School boys’ golf team Tuesday
at the Riverside Golf Course.
The Red Tornadoes won the Clinton Tournament
with a 307. Class 5A Bishop McGuinness was the
runner-up with a 313 and fellow 4A competitor Elk
City placed third with a 319.
“I was happy with the way we performed because
I didn’t think we played well, but still found a way to
score,” said coach Mike Lee. “McGuinness is a good
team and so is Altus in 5A. Elk City is obviously a
good team, so to find a way to score against a good
field like that is a good job.”
Garrison Mendoza was the individual runner-up
with a 72 on the day.
Garrett Browning followed with a 75 to place fifth
in the tournament.
Logan Oliver was next with a 79 and Addison Dupree
turned in an 81. Trey Lau shot an 88 to complete
the starting five.
“Garrison and Garrett didn’t strike the ball very
well, but I’m happy with the way they found a way to
score,” Lee said. “Our three and four golfers hit the
ball well. Logan had a really nice round and Addison
was capable of coming in with a 75. He had a couple
of holes that cost him some strokes.
“I like the way they competed. In the middle of
the round they had some bad holes, but found a way
to score.
“Our greens are really slick here, especially on
the front nine and when the wind is blowing. All of
the greens we have been playing on have been aerated,
so it’s different here. Some teams were really
struggling with their putts, but we probably had an
advantage here.”
There were also Clinton JV golfers entered in the
event. Blake Clanton led the way with an 88. Grant
Lee shot a 97 and the two “Zachs” – Garner and Caler
– both came in with a 98. Ethan Garner shot 100,
Clint Adams shot 106 and Brandon Bone rounded
out the list with a 110.
“They’re all working hard and they have some good
days and bad days,” coach Lee said. “They all have to
work to get proficient in their short game and it’s good
for them to play in a tournament to feel those nerves
and see how they handle it once things start going.”
