$65,000 WORTH of new multi-polymer lane markers
are dressing up major Clinton thoroughfares. Prominent
among those new markings are these thermoplastic red,
white and blue shields being installed on Clinton’s two U.S.
highways and lone state highway. This I-40 shield is intended
to better inform drivers what lane to get in when they
SWOSU scores TD
with playoff games
Southwestern Oklahoma State University being the
choice for four Oklahoma high school football playoff games
in late November/early December resulted in nearly a $1
million impact on the area economy.
An estimated 12,000 fans attended the Class 2A and
Class C games in Weatherford on Nov. 23, Nov. 30 and Dec.
1, and business analysts at SWOSU’s Center for Economic
and Business Development believe those guests spent at
least $984,000 on food, souvenirs, fuel and lodging.
Doug Misak, director of the center, said statistics indicate
that the average visitor on a one-day trip to Weatherford
spends about $80. If that guest spent the night in one of
Weatherford’s 400 hotel rooms that figure goes up to $200.
The CEBD estimates that 200 total rooms were occupied
by sports fans such as grandparents and other relatives on
the three dates.
Participating teams were Tipton (twice), Sharon-Mutual,
City’s recycling plan
allowed to die quietly
By GERALD GREEN
Recycling, in the form proposed for Clinton,
died a silent death Tuesday. At least it’s
dead for the moment.
At Tuesday’s Clinton City Council meeting,
the idea of single-stream curbside recycling
was allowed to die without a vote after three
months of intense debate.
Council members could have chosen any of
three recycling proposals received two weeks
earlier. Instead, they chose none.
City Manager Steve Hewitt began the discussion
by stating that he could not endorse
either a plan he and his staff had prepared
under which the city itself would run the recycling
operation nor one submitted by a Hobart
company, Progressive Waste Solutions.
Both would have required garbage customers
to pay new monthly fees – $4.05 per household
in the case of the city’s plan and $6.45 in
the case of Progressive’s.
“Staff does not recommend a price increase,”
said Hewitt, explaining that the third
program – proposed by the city’s current
trash contractor, Republic Services – would
not require a cost increase but would involve
the company taking over all trash operations
here. That had been objected to by numerous
people during a series of public meetings held
primarily in October.
If the council did not want the Republic
plan, Hewitt indicated he might come back
with one that did not include curbside recycling.
He didn’t say what it would be, but
presumably it would be one in which patrons
would voluntarily take their recyclable goods
to a central collection point rather than having
them picked up at residences.
Mayor Allen Bryson, presiding over his
last meeting before relinquishing his position
Jan. 2, asked for comments from the council.
There were none.
He then asked for comments from the audience,
provided they hadn’t been expressed
previously at other public meetings. Two people
responded, one for the Republic proposal
and one against it.
“I’m in favor of it,” said Patch McComas.
“For those opposed asking you to ignore the
money the city makes down the road, I ask
you to consider what it would make now.”
That was a reference to money the city would
get by selling all its present garbage equipment,
which it would if Republic took over.
McComas also referred to a survey sent
out with utility bills last month. He said there
were 1,028 responses with 70.1 percent in
favor of curbside recycling, 3.5 percent undecided,
and the rest opposed.
“Is the council truly listening to its constituency,
or are you listening to those griping
the loudest?” asked McComas.
Former councilman Bob Smith gave the re-
sponse for the opponents.
“I’ve had about eight
different older couples
contact me,” he said.
“They’re not against
recycling, but they are
against giving up city
equipment.”
Smith also contended
there would be price increases
for trash collection
under the Republic
plan, even though its proposal
actually contained
a very slight decrease.
Bryson, still feisty despite
recovering from a horse
riding accident about
10 days earlier, said nobody
had ever said there
wouldn’t be increases –
that the present contract
calls for price hikes in
line with the Consumer
Price Index.
But he also said, “I
don’t want us to beat each
other up tonight,” and
added, “I’m of a mind we
need to vote on this.” He
then asked for a motion.
After a long silence, Phyllis
Smith – also attending
her last meeting as a
councilwoman – said she
would make a motion that
the city accept the plan
proposed by Republic.
When there was no
second, Bryson asked if
he legally could second it.
“No,” replied Assistant
City Attorney Ryan
Meacham.
After another brief
silence, Councilman and
former mayor Don Rodolph
advised Bryson the
motion would die for lack
of a second. The current
mayor declared it dead
and asked if there were
any other motions.
When none was forthcoming,
Bryson stated,
“At this point we have
no action. I think I just
closed it down.”
Frederick, Oklahoma Christian, Forgan, Laverne
and Pond Creek-Hunter.
“Whether the fans were wearing red, black, blue,
gold or purple, they actually meant one color to the
merchants of Weatherford — green,” Misak said.
One Weatherford restaurant owner said Dec. 1
was the largest-ever sales day for that restaurant.
SWOSU President Randy Beutler said public
events at university venues not only promote
SWOSU’s interests but also enrich the community,
county and state of Oklahoma.
But that is the story of Christmas. That is the
real reason for the season. The spirit of giving, of
investing in someone else, rose out of the life and
love of Jesus.
Its earthly beginning was in a manger in Bethlehem,
but it originated in the heart of Father God
from the foundation of the world.
He saw in us something worth saving. He saw
the possibilities in a rough fisherman named Simon.
He knew that he could become Peter, the rock.
He saw the selfish, indulgent traitor named Levi
and knew he could become the gospel writer we
know as Matthew.
He saw the man with the withered hand and
knowing it was a set-up by the Pharisees to see if
he would heal on the Sabbath, he took the risk and
made the man whole.
It began the trail leading to His crucifixion, but
he paid the price because he loved. He sees people
today, withered by the scars of sin, impoverished
of love, broken and seemingly with no purpose for
today or hope for tomorrow. He knows that a little
love applied in just the right places at the right time
can change a man or woman forever.
On a personal note he saw a young couple, broken
from the loss of their firstborn, and on a Christmas
day in 1967, through the mistake of a young
coed, gave them the gift of a beautiful blue-eyed
baby girl. This is the big picture; this is the real
meaning of Christmas.
But it did not end there. That was just the beginning.
“He who did not spare his own son, but gave
him up for us all — how will he not also, along with
him, graciously give us all things.”(Romans 8:32)
He does not just pardon our sins but he gives us
Himself. He wants to walk with us and talk with
us as good friends should and do.
But we see in the world the results of a society
that has at best marginalized God. We, in our independent
spirit have decided, like a two-year-old, “I
can do it myself.” We haven’t learned the lesson of
Paul that “His strength is made perfect in our weakness.”(2
Corinthians 12:9) We need to relearn the lesson
of the kings of the Orient — wise men still seek
Him. May you have the merriest of Christmases.
I must digress and share information about
a coming event for men. Society, and the arts in
particular, have promoted the softer side of men to
the point that what it means to be a man is played
down and at best obscured.
This event, “Men Stepping Up,” will be on Super
Bowl Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 2. Some of
the top teachers and leaders in men’s ministry will
be sharing, via video, in the areas of (1) defining
manhood, (2) living courageously, (3) building a life
of faith, and (4) stepping up to lead.
It will be held in the First Baptist Church Family
Life Center, Weatherford. This will be the most
significant men’s event of the year. Please share
this with men and youth from high school seniors
to senior citizens. Youth and college students come
free. For other men, the fee will be $10.
Prescribed burn
associations aid
for landowners
By SEAN HUBBARD
OSU communication
Started by Oklahoma
State University, burn
associations have been
around the state for
more than 10 years. As
ironic as it may be, these
associations have been
spreading like wildfire
since the idea came to
fruition within the Division
of Agricultural
Sciences and Natural
Resources at OSU.
“There are now 15
associations in the state
covering 30 counties with
more than 350 members,”
said John Weir, rangeland
ecology and management
research associate.
“In the last three years,
six of the most active associations
have conducted
125 burns on more than
60,000 acres. And that’s
done the right way and
done safely.”
The central idea of
the associations is for
landowners to pool their
equipment and help each
other burn safely.
“In areas where you
have small landownerships,
where the pastures
aren’t as big and you have
fragmented ownership,
people want to burn, but
they have concerns about
burning and not being
able to do it,” Weir said.
“It gives you added
equipment and labor to
make the burns safer.
One of the biggest benefits
members will see is
a reduction in liability.”
Some landowners may
be a bit apprehensive to
burn because of lack of
experience or the threat
of a fire moving to a
neighbor’s land. By joining
as burn associations,
these landowners can
manage these risks with
more experienced people.
“If the fire would happen
to escape and spread
to a neighboring area, it
may be another member
of the association who is
probably going to burn
anyway,” Weir said. “It is
neighbor helping neighbor,
sharing resources.”
Many of the associations
receive financial aid
through federal and local
grants and donations,
including some vehicles
from local fire departments
that support the
burn associations.
“It’s a win-win situation
for not only the
landowners, but also the
community in general,”
Weir said. “I’d love to see
every county in the state
have them.”
in joining a burn
association near their
property, or starting an
nearby, information can
Choose reputable tattoo parlor to lower risk
DEAR DOCTOR K:
My teenage son wants
to get a tattoo. What are
the risks?
DEAR READER:
These days it seems like
every other young person
has a tattoo, so it should
come as no surprise that
your teen wants one, too.
Tattoos can allow a teen
to be like his peers or
simply to make an artistic
statement.
Talk with your teen
about why he wants one.
Make sure he has thought
everything through carefully.
Yes, I know he’s a
teenager and thinking
things through may not
come easily. But make
sure he understands that
there are dangers to getting
a tattoo.
Teenagers, of course,
do lots of things that are
dangerous. Unless they
result in permanent inju-
DEAR ABBY: My
divorce from “Vince”
will be final in a few
weeks. We have two sons
together and we communicate
well. Since our
breakup, my parents
have continued their relationship
with
him. They say,
“You divorced
him, we didn’t.”
They have
confirmed that
he will be invited
to all
holiday events.
I am so upset
about it that I
now want nothing to do
with them. Vince has
his own family who have
unanimously removed
me from their lives.
I’m hurt by my parents’
actions. Am I wrong? And
are my feelings normal?
— LOST MY PARENTS
By Jeanne Phillips
ry, however, they’re temporary.
A person can look
back at driving at high
speeds and appreciate the
risk he was taking back
then. But it was a temporary
lapse in judgment.
In contrast, tattoos
can be permanent. If
later in life your son is
not happy with his decision
and wants a tattoo
removed, it can be difficult
(sometimes impossible)
and painful. These
days, laser treatments
are the most widely
used technique to remove
tattoos. They’re
not always successful,
and sometimes they
leave permanent scars.
There are possible
dangers to having any
procedure done to our
bodies. Your son needs to
understand all the risks.
These include:
— Pain during the
IN THE DIVORCE IN
CALIFORNIA
DEAR LOST: As the
father of your children,
Vince will always be
a part of your life, so
my advice is to accept
it graciously.
Because Vince
had a good relationship
with
your parents, I
can understand
why they would
extend an invitation
to the
father of their
grandchildren.
Whether he will choose
to accept is the question.
That said, your feelings
are your feelings.
Rather than say they are
“wrong,” I would point
out that they are unproductive
at this point. As
you move forward with
procedure.
— Painful skin infections
(and sometimes
blood infections), which
can occur if the tattoo
is not done under sterile
conditions, or if the site
is not properly cared for
afterward. Recently the
Journal of the American
Medical Association
reported cases of tattoorelated
severe infections
from mycobacteria,
related to the bacteria
that cause tuberculosis.
Either the needles or the
ink can be contaminated
with bacteria.
Even more dangerous
is the possibility of a
virus (such as hepatitis
B, hepatitis C or HIV)
being spread from a
dirty needle. That’s why
it is essential to choose
a tattoo parlor that uses
proper sterile technique
and sterile needles.
your emotional life, I predict
this will become less
of an issue.
DEAR ABBY: I am
a 50-year-old divorced
man. I use an online
dating service to meet
women my age, but I’m
extremely frustrated by
the lack of courtesy.
Why is it so hard for a
woman to simply write,
“Thanks, but I’m not
interested” after getting
a note of inquiry? My
photos are recent, I’m
polite and I send thoughtful
notes that show I
have read their profiles
carefully and think
there’s a chance we have
something in common. I
admit, I’m not the handsomest
man, but I hold a
master’s degree and I am
financially stable.
I have sent a dozen
— Allergic reaction.
Anyone may develop allergic
reactions to tattoo
dye.
Your son can decrease
these risks by
choosing a reputable
tattoo studio. Contact
your state Department
of Public Health to find
out if it licenses or certifies
tattoo parlors. He (if
you trust his judgment)
or you should check out
several studios before
selecting one.
It is also important
that your son follows “after
care” instructions to
best prevent infection. In
general, the site should
be kept clean and dry.
He should watch the site
carefully for any signs
of infection, including
redness, pus, tenderness
or fever. If any of these
signs develop, contact a
physician right away.
notes over the last few
months, and not one
thoughts? — DATELESS
DEAR DATELESS:
Please don’t let the lack
of response make you
quit putting yourself out
there, because eventually
you’re going to find someone
if you keep trying.
You are an intelligent
man, and I am sure you
have much to offer some
lucky woman.
However, I would
delicately point out to
you that by not responding
to your notes these
