Clinton has two Merit semifinalists
Officials with the National
Merit Scholarship
Corporation (NMSC) announced
the names of approximately
16,000 semifinalists
in the 58th annual
National Merit Scholarship
Program this week, and
two of those honorees come
from Clinton — William
Davis and Jake Resendez.
Davis is the son of David
and Carol Davis while
Resendez is the son of
Rhonda Resendez.
Davis said he plans to
attend Oklahoma State
University to study toward
a degree in computer
engineering with a
minor in music.
Resendez is bound for
either the University of
Oklahoma or Texas A&M
University to study toward
a degree in education.
Both are seniors who will
graduate in 2013.
In addition to his academic
honors, Davis is a
two-time All-State honoree
in band.
While Clinton has had
a few single Merit honorees
over the years, this is
the first time the school
has had two.
No other school Clinton’s
size had more than
one honoree in this latest
list of semifinalists, and
no other school in the
Clinton Daily News coverage
area made the Merit
list for this year.
These academically
talented high school seniors
have an opportunity
to continue in the competition
for some 8,300
National Merit Scholarships
worth more than
$32 million that will be
offered next spring.
To be considered for a
Merit Scholarship award,
semifinalists must fulfill
several requirements to
advance to the finalist
level of the competition.
About 90 percent of the
semifinalists are expected
to attain finalist standing,
and more than half
of the finalists will win a
National Merit Scholarship,
earning the Merit
Scholar title.
Supt. Kevin Hime said
Merit honorees can expect
generous five-figure
scholarships from just
about any institution they
decide to attend.
NMSC, a not-for-profit
organization that operates
without government
assistance, was established
in 1955 specifically
to conduct the annual
National Merit Scholarship
program.
Scholarships are underwritten
by NMSC with
its own funds and by approximately
440 business
organizations and higher
education institutions
that share NMSC’s goals
of honoring the nation’s
Young talents shine in ‘Willy Wonka’
By STEVE BELCHER
Veteran musical director
Kathy Kelley pulls out
all the stops when she puts
on a musical. She did it
with “Oklahoma!” and she
has definitely done it with
the latest musical celebration
to grace the venerable
Southwest Playhouse stage
— “Willy Wonka.”
“Wonka” opens at 7:30
THINGS GET GUMMED UP for Elly Martin of Clinton, center, in
the role of Violet Beauregarde in the Southwest Playhouse musical “Willy
Wonka.” In this scene are her stage mother, played by Julie Barnett of
show opens at 7:30 p.m. today. (CDN photo by Steve Belcher)
In turn, OBI will make
a monetary donation of
similar value to Children’s
Hospital Foundation.
It’s a chance to “doubly
give” to children battling
critical health conditions
through the life-saving gift
of blood and support for pediatric
medical research,
community outreach and
treatment initiatives.
“Someone needs blood
every two seconds,” said
be a hot commodity. The
last major musical on the
local stage “Oliver!” was
pretty much a sellout.
This reporter is a mere
blip on the canvas stage
for this production, so he
was able to sit and watch
the majority of the dress
rehearsal Wednesday night
for the sake of this review.
Kelley confided to me
that there are a lot of other
firsts for the local stage
in this production. I could
get specific, but that would
spoil the decided surprise
factor of this show.
Let me just say a couple
of things. First off, special
effects are a large part of
the bread and butter of this
production. There’s some
tough physical humor in
this show and even some
bravery on the part of the
performers, but the audience
will see what I mean.
Secondly, the audience
won’t be fooled by much
of this (maybe one or two
things) but they need to cut
the production some slack,
since this was a first attempt,
and it’s pretty good
with a bit of innovation and
hard work thrown in.
“Wonka” has proved to
be a challenging production,
but the special effects
crew for this show has
been up to the task.
In this reviewer’s opinion,
though, it’s the young
John Armitage, M.D.,
president and CEO of OBI.
“That is why we are asking
everyone to show community
support through
blood donation along with
their school spirit during
football season.”
Because there is no
substitute for blood, the
supply must constantly
be renewed.
Although all blood types
are needed, those with O-
(See BLOOD, P. 2)
people who make this production
what it is.
Being a longtime teacher,
Kelley knows how to
get the most out of her
young charges of every
age, and this show is populated
with an incredibly
talented young troupe
— many of them already
solo caliber performers
dedicated to their craft.
It almost goes without
saying these days that
Parker Williams has a
performing gift. He’s at
it again in the major role
of Charlie Bucket in this
show. He performs several
solo and duet numbers with
the growing confidence of a
stage veteran, which he is
rapidly turning into.
Some of the stuff he
does, along with Truett
Guthrie as his Grandpa
Joe, involves very challenging
circumstances.
There just aren’t enough
column inches to get in all
of the accolades for these
performers, unfortunately,
in such a huge cast.
Yet another stage stunner
is Haley Norris as
Veruca Salt (don’t call her
Veronica). She has her own
tough little special effects
bit along with a hard-driving
vocal number that she
seems tailor made for.
Her elaborate movements
on stage compliment
Special effects, music, colorful set make ‘Wonka’
the song perfectly.
Playing her on-stage
dad well is Bryan Johnston,
the perfect father
with a big and always
ready checkbook. He even
participates in the special
effects bit with Norris.
Then there’s Derek
Norris as Mike Teavee.
He has tackled a really
fast, tongue-twisting
song along with his stage
mom, played by Melissa
McSpadden, and they
both play off of each other
exceptionally well. It’s a
comic masterpiece.
Norris also is good at
interacting with Dean Mc-
Spadden in the title role as
Wonka, especially in their
special effects TV scene.
Not to be outdone is
Elly Martin as the gumpopping
Violet Beauregarde.
Her song, “Chew It,”
involves its own first-time
special effect for the local
stage. Wow, can she hit the
high notes toward the end.
She interacts well with
her stage mom, played by
veteran director and performer
Julie Barnett. It’s
fun to watch the pair as
Yet another young
man who can really sing
in this show is Tanner
Fisher as the candy man.
He can really belt out the
show’s signature song. He
has some tender scenes
with Parker Williams
as Charlie Bucket to go
along with the singing,
clunky candy cart well.
Connor Williams, especially
young for such a major
than okay for his first
time in the spotlight.
This younger Williams
also has a special effects
bit that will have the audience
laughing.
He’s another one
BLOOD
(Continued from P. 1)
negative type blood are
especially encouraged
to donate.
According to the
American Association of
Blood Banks (AABB),
those with O-negative
blood type make up only
nine percent of the national
population.
However, O-negative
blood can be used in any
emergency situation when
a patient’s blood type has
not yet been identified.
OBI exclusively provides
every drop of blood
needed by patients in
all hospitals in the metro-Oklahoma
City area.
Some 140 other medical
facilities across the state
rely solely on OBI donors
to provide life-saving
blood for their patients.
Anyone, 16 years or
older can typically donate
blood. Those who are
16 must weigh at least
125 pounds and provide
signed parental permission.
Those who are 17
must weigh at least 125
pounds. Donors, ages 18
and up, must weigh at
least 110 pounds.
Blood can be given
every 56 days. To find
out more or make an appointment
to donate, call
Marsha Moore at (580)
Pruitt as Sophie and Amy
Freeman as Dani. They
even get in quite a bit
of singing, all done very
well, on such songs as
“The Candy Man.”
Oh, did I forget there
was a smattering of
adults in this show?
Dean McSpadden has
some tough songs to sing
as Wonka, but he’s up to
the challenge. Perhaps
he’s at his best, though,
when he verbally jousts
with the various children
with wit and charm.
Truett Guthrie is an
impressive stage performer.
His role as Grandpa
Joe is tailor made for him,
and he’s perfectly paired
with Parker Williams.
Some of his, dare I call it,
stunt work in this show
could have been reserved
for someone younger — if
it’s politically okay to say
that — but he carries it
off along with his stage
grandson.
One of the best numbers
WHITE MALE
MINIATURE
SCHNAUZER
in this show is reserved for
Sean and Julie Williams
as Mr. and Mrs. Bucket —
joined at times by Guthrie.
Their soaring number is
“Cheer Up Charlie.” It has
been applauded every time
they have performed it in
rehearsal, and it never
gets old.
Likewise, Sean Williams
and Parker have
their own time on stage in
“Think Positive,” which is
highly enjoyable.
There’s a bed bunch
in this show that is a
laugh riot. Guthrie joins
them at times, and I’ve
already given McCain a
brief salute. The others
are James Rainwater as
Grandpa George and Eithel
Simpson as Grandma
Josephine. Theirs is an
ongoing gag that has to
be seen to be appreciated.
Just a couple more cast
members to round out this
show have to be mentioned.
dons a squirrel costume
for part of this show,
along with set master
Rick McCain. They even
get to tossing around nuts
to good effect and are
hilarious in the role, especially
when they interact
with the spoiled brats.
Appearing a few times
in various modes in this
show are a troupe of cooks
and chorus members,
including myself and
Emma Brown, Tracye
Kelley, Josh McSpadden,
Ray Simmons, Jeri Zitterkob
and T.J. Williams.
This troupe sings and
gets in a few dance moves
(at least some of the others
do — I’m not too sure
about me).
There’s so much more
to say about this show, but
this review has run way
too long as it is. The set
is an inspired, intricate
color riot that is nothing
short of eye-popping. Fact
is, that almost describes
the whole show.
Horoscope
Sat., Sept. 15,2012
Some positive transformations
in your social
life could be in
the offing in the year
ahead. Old relationships
could be revised or new
friends acquired, creating
numerous additional
close, emotional bonds.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-
Sept. 22) — You’ll sparkle
if you’re involved in
some kind of creative
endeavor. This will be
especially true if you
have an imaginative
partner who is as bright
as you are.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct.
23) — Rather than leave
important matters up
to the capriciousness
of fate, take charge of
events yourself. You are
the final arbiter of your
own affairs.
SCORPIO (Oct. 24-
Nov. 22) — Be a good
listener, especially if
you’re with a group of
friends who are discussing
some new topics.
There’s a chance that
what you learn can be
used to your advantage.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov.
23-Dec. 21) — Conditions
in general should
be quite favorable for
you over the next couple
of days, especially where
your material interests
are concerned. Do something
meaningful.
CAPRICORN (Dec.
22-Jan. 19) — Knowledge
gained from personal
experience is one
of our greatest assets.
If you’re stymied with
something you’re doing
or with someone you
know, look into the past
for answers.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-
Feb. 19) — Your commercial
affairs are best
conducted in a secretive
atmosphere, with
only the people involved
present. Outsiders or
kibitzers will only cause
confusion and complications.
P I S C E S ( F e b .
20-March 20) — If there
is something pleasant
you’d like to do, contact
your closest friends first
to see if any of them
are interested in joining
you. Hard feelings
would result if you don’t.
ARIES (March
21-April 19) — Cozy
up to a friend or family
member who can help
you advance a career
objective. The ladder
to success will be much
steadier with this person’s
cooperation.
TAURUS (April 20-
May 20) — Because
you’re an exceptional
organizer, take it upon
yourself to help an associate
who is fumbling
with a situation that
you’re familiar with.
Share your knowledge,
and everyone comes out
ahead.
GEMINI (May 21-
June 20) — You’re the
catalyst who can unite
the family to take on a
common mission. The
changes your clan will
be able to effect will
bring greater harmony
to the entire household.
CANCER (June 21-
July 22) — It’s an excellent
day to discuss
a critical matter with
your mate. Reaching
a collective conclusion
will be far better than
any answer arrived at
individually.
LEO (July 23-Aug.
22) — You should now
be able to feel the effects
of some influences that
could be having a stabilizing
Clinton Laundry Chamber
August Business of Month
Clinton Laundry & Cleaners was chosen to be the Business of the Month for
August 2012 by the Clinton Chamber of Commerce. The company has been providing
excellent janitorial service, uniform service and clothing service to the city of
Clinton since 1907. It does not just help the local community through its payroll for
85 employees but also provides services all over western Oklahoma. It is preferred
from as far east as El Reno to as far south as Lawton. Clinton Laundry & Cleaners
also has pick-up locations in Elk City and Weatherford. Dave Felch has owned
this thriving, family-owned business since 1980. His three children have their
roles as well — Liz Johnson, office manager; Debbie Lehman, local dry cleaning
and delivery, and Brian Felch, head of the Janitorial Department. Johnson said,
“To be in business for over 100 years we’ve had to continuously change and grow
and look forward to continuing that tradition. It’s our pleasure to serve Western
Oklahoma and to be able to operate in our hometown of Clinton.” (Courtesy photo)
P. 6, Clinton (Okla.), Daily News, Friday, September 14, 2012
Glory and dismay came the Clinton Middle School
football teams’ way Tuesday at the Tornado Bowl.
The Whirlwinds played host to Lawton Central
and split the double-header.
The Clinton seventh graders (3-0) picked up a 32-6
victory and the eighth graders (2-1) suffered their first
ever loss in a 38-6 defeat.
Seventh Graders
Bryler Atchley scored on a 1-yard touchdown run
in the first quarter and a 3-yard touchdown run in
the second quarter to give the younger Whirlwinds
a 12-0 lead.
Lawton Central would come back to score a touchdown,
but Greyson Weedon rumbled for a 55-yard
touchdown to push the lead to 18-6 at the half.
Weedon scored again from five yards out in the
third quarter and Conor Wyer hit Zachary Hester
on a pass for the two-point conversion to make it a
26-6 lead.
Football picks made for week three
Week two fared much
better for ye olde sports
editor and his weekly
pigskin picks. The week
before I could have well
called them “weakly”
picks.
Let’s do a quick recap
of the picks so far:
Week one – 5-of-10
Week two – 7-of-10
Overall that is 12-for-
20 or 60 percent correct.
This week will serve
as a way to make that
percentage factor go up
for sure.
With progress clearly
being made and confidence
growing, things
are bound to continue
improving.
Here are the brave
picks for week three:
1. Clinton at Southeast
– Clinton
It’s the second leg of
a three-game road tour
and the Spartans are
still smarting from last
week’s loss to Star Spencer.
If Clinton jumps on
top of them early it will
be over. My biggest hope
is that this is a week
where the starters can
get a break and the reserves
can come in and
carry the load.
2. Cordell at Mangum
– Mangum
The Blue Devils have
stubbed their toe twice
so far and Mangum is
willing to oblige to make
it a third time. Cordell
has been outscored 61-14
so far this season.
3. Burns Flat-Dill
City at Mooreland –
Mooreland
Early indications are
Mooreland is back on
Riding
The Pine
By Sean Stephens
track and that could
well mean bad news for
the Eagles.
4. Corn Bible Academy
at Grandfield – Corn
Bible Academy
Have missed this slot
each week so far, but
this time feel good about
picking the Crusaders.
Tougher games will be
down the road for CBA.
5. Thomas vs. Carnegie
– Thomas
Carnegie has been
down, down, down this
season. The Terriers
will take this one with
relative ease.
6. Weatherford vs.
Bishop McGuinness –
McGuinness
I do not, I repeat, do
not like making this
pick. My heart leans
one way and my head
another. The Eagles
finish a tough non-district
slate before getting
ready to host the
“Custer County Conflict”
next week. Chuck
Edwards really should
be paid royalties for
coming up with that
particular moniker.
7. Broken Bow at
Metro Christian – Broken
Bow
ICE AGE:
That’s one mean bus
trip for the Savages.
Broken Bow and Metro
have had some good
games in the past and
this should be no different.
8. Broken Arrow at
Union – Union
Itching to pick Broken
Arrow in an upset,
but just can’t do it. The
dominance of Jenks and
Union will have to come
THE FIRST BANK & TRUST CO. T-ball team this summer consisted of, front row, from
left, Andres Williams, Hannah George, Daniel George, Haddan George, Joseph Hammans,
Adam Flores; back row, coach Kenneth Cross, Taylar Baggett, Bryonna Brewster, Kyler Cross,
Montiel Crane and coach Ray Hammans. (Photo courtesy of Keri Staggs Photography)
Whirlwinds split with Central
Michael Clelland broke free for a 33-yard touchdown
run to complete the scoring at 32-6 for the
Whirlwinds.
Eighth Graders
The elder Whirlwinds ran into a little bit of trouble
against Lawton Central.
“They were pretty talented, but we did not play
well either,” said assistant coach Greg McKee. “They
would home run us here and there and we would make
some drives but just come up short.”
Deonte Barker scored on a 3-yard run in the fourth
quarter to help his team avoid being shut out.
to an end sometime and
maybe the state’s largest
school can get the job
done.
9. Davis vs. Heritage
Hall – Davis
It will be at Davis
and the Chargers’ best
player was injured in
the Clinton game. The
Wolves will run, run and
run some more out of
the wishbone. You know
what you are getting
with them every time.
10. Jenks at Owasso
– Jenks
When was the last
time Jenks went 0-3?
Not this time. Should
be a tough game on the
road, but Jenks will prevail
one more time.
Carbon monoxide monitor can save your life and home
DEAR DOCTOR K:
What is carbon monoxide?
And why do I need
carbon monoxide monitors
in my house?
DEAR READER: Carbon
monoxide is a tasteless,
colorless, odorless
gas. It sounds harmless,
but breathing it in can
cause carbon monoxide
poisoning, which can be
fatal. Because you can’t
see, smell or taste carbon
monoxide, it can kill you
without warning — that
is, unless you have carbon
monoxide monitors to
warn you of the danger.
You might be surprised
how many sources in your
house can release carbon
monoxide. These include
cars, small gasoline engines
(such as lawnmowers),
stoves, furnaces, gas
ranges, water heaters and
clothes dryers. The risk
of poisoning is especially
Grandma is slow to cheer an overdue wedding
DEAR ABBY: My
daughter is annoyed
with me because I’m not
jumping up and down
with joy over my grandson’s
forthcoming wedding.
Yes, I am
happy they’re
getting married,
but how
excited can I
get? The two
have been sexually
involved
since they met
in high school
four years ago.
She was 16; he
was 17.
For the past two years,
he and his girlfriend have
shared an apartment and
lived as man and wife.
The bride-to-be’s parents
are not exactly thrilled
either at the expense of
a white gown and a few
hundred chicken dinners,
hall and band. However,
By Jeanne Phillips
high in enclosed spaces
with poor ventilation.
When you take in a
breath, you pull lots of
oxygen into your lungs.
The oxygen passes from
your lungs into the blood.
There, it attaches to a protein
inside your red blood
cells, called hemoglobin,
and takes a ride as your
blood circulates throughout
your body. That’s how
oxygen reaches every cell
in the body — and every
cell needs oxygen.
Normally, there’s virtually
no carbon monoxide in
the air you breathe. However,
if one of the sources
I’ve listed above is releasing
carbon monoxide in the
air, it also passes from your
lungs into the blood and attaches
to hemoglobin. In
fact, it attaches much more
readily and sticks more
tightly to hemoglobin than
does oxygen. As a result,
my daughter insists on it
and wants everybody to
get excited.
OK — so I’m excited.
Whoopee. — GRANNY
MAE
DEAR GRAN-
NY MAE: You are
focusing on the
wrong thing. Your
grandson and
his fiancee care
enough about each
other to commit,
in a public ceremony,
to spending
their lives together.
That’s a positive
step that deserves to be
celebrated.
Whether you or I approve
of couples living
together is beside the
point. They are adults
and it was their choice. Be
happy that they are now
tying the knot to bind
themselves together in a
the blood can’t carry oxygen
throughout your body.
Without enough oxygen,
cells suffocate.
If you’re exposed to just
low levels of carbon monoxide,
you may feel tired and
achy and have impaired
memory and concentration,
shortness of breath,
dizziness or fatigue. If you
breathe in high levels of
carbon monoxide and don’t
get immediate treatment,
you could lose consciousness
DEAR ABBY: My
daughters attend a high
school where a “Sadie
Hawkins” dance has
been planned for the students.
The problem is,
the guys at their school
think it’s “cool” to wait
until the day before the
dance to answer the
girls’ invitations. These
are otherwise polite
young men, but they see
no problem in making
the girl wait until the
last minute to know if
she even has a date for
the event.
I think this is extremely
rude and inconsiderate.
What is your opinion?
And what do you suggest
the girls say to the
young men who leave
them hanging? -- MOM
WHO CARES IN ARI-
ZONA
— Never use charcoal
grills or hibachis indoors.
— Have fuel-burning
appliances professionally
installed.
— Have your heating
system, flues and chimneys
professionally inspected
before turning on
your heater for winter.
— Never operate gaspowered
tools or engines
inside.
— Never leave your
car running inside an attached
garage.
Several years ago, the
carbon monoxide detector
in our home sounded
an alarm. I was upstairs,
and came downstairs to
smell gas in the kitchen.
It turned out there was a
leak in the line to the gas
range. So the carbon monoxide
detector had alerted
us to a fire danger as well.
Fortunately, everything
worked out well.
DEAR MOM WHO
CARES: The courteous
way to respond when
invited out is to accept
or say no PROMPTLY.
I agree that it’s rude to
keep someone hanging. If
your daughters don’t get
a response within a reasonable
amount of time --
say, 24 to 48 hours -- they
should invite someone
else. And when the original
boy finally comes up
with his acceptance, he
should be told, “Sorry,
when I didn’t hear back
from you, I asked someone
else.”
TWELVE CLINTON FIREFIGHTERS showed up Tuesday for the groundbreaking of the city’s new fire station. Posing with City Manager
Steve Hewitt, at the far left, are Interim Assistant Chief Barry DeHart, Battalion Chiefs Billy Challis and Rick Challis, Interim Chief Randy
Carpenter, retired chief Wade Anders, volunteer Troy Calvert, Lts. Jerry Littke and Scott Haggard, firefighter John Denney, and volunteers
Brian Sperle, Brad Lambeth, Shane Fawver and Toby Anders. Weatherford firemen stood by at the old station so Clinton firefighters who were
on duty could attend the groundbreaking. It’s hoped that the six-bay, 17,000-square-foot new station, to be located at 200 S. Fourth St., will be
ready for occupancy by next spring. The old one, built as a WPA project, was dedicated in 1936. (CDN photo by Gerald Green)
God has worked to preserve Bible
In 1844, Count Tischendorf,
an Indiana Jones
type of explorer, was
visiting in the monastery
near Mt. Sinai. While
in the library, he saw a
trash bin filled with pages
of an old manuscript
about to be used as kindling.
As he examined
these 129 pages he found
that they were part of the
oldest manuscript of the
Bible he had ever seen.
The monks allowed
him to take 43 pages
with him. After several
more visits, finally in
1859 he was able to have
and pull together the
remaining pages.
What he had found
was one of the largest,
earliest and best preserved
copies of the Bible
in existence. This is just
one example of the providence
of God in allowing
the Bible to survive.
The question often
arises as to the reliability
of the New Testament.
How did it come
into its present form? We
know that several letters
or books circulated in
the period of the early
church are not found
in the present-day New
Testament. Who decided
which books were
divinely inspired and included,
and which were
to be excluded?
Space does not allow
us to go into much detail
but perhaps a few
thoughts will help.
During the time of
the early church it was
necessary to establish
a written record of the
teachings of Jesus. Several
heretical groups
were claiming certain
teachings that were
not consistent with the
teachings of the apostles.
Many scholars feel
that the Gospel of Mark
was the first book of the
New Testament to be
written. He was a close
associate of Peter and
recorded the teachings
and sermons of Peter
which comprise the gospel
as we have it today.
One of the criteria
used to determine the
reliability of a particular
book was, was it written
by one of the apostles or a
close associate. Another
factor was the internal
evidence. Was the material
included consistent
with the teachings of the
other books accepted as
divinely inspired?
For example, some
of the books contained
men and a widow) were
I would hope that this
short introduction would
whet readers’ appetites
for a more thorough
and providential
