Enrollment
totals 2,270
for first day
Enrollment numbers for the Clinton Public Schools
were still a little hazy as of Friday, but Supt. Kevin Hime
said he was entertaining somewhere around 2,270 students
for the start of the 2012-2013 school year.
That compares to 2,230 for the start of the 2011-2012
school year.
Hime’s problem is that about 100 students that were
pre-enrolled hadn’t checked in by the start of school Friday.
He isn’t sure how many of those students will show
up Monday and how many have moved on.
The student counts for Southwest and Nance Elementary
Schools along with Clinton High School
are all over 500 with 375 students on campus at
Washington Elementary School and 350 at Clinton
Middle School.
These are all rough numbers. Hime was expecting
to have a clearer picture of enrollment early this
coming week.
He thinks he’s okay in every grade except possibly for
A $5,000 U-Haul trailer
designed to carry autos
has been reported stolen
from the Creative Colors
parking lot at 405 N. Sixth
St. in Clinton.
Although the report
wasn’t turned in until
Thursday, employee Marsha
Moore told police the
trailer was discovered
missing Tuesday.
Police also have received
a report of another
tire slashing in town, hiking
the total to 17 in less
than a week. The latest
belonged to Bill Cummins
and occurred in the 300
block of S. 24th Street.
It was reported to police
Wednesday.
A night earlier, all four
tires on each of two cars
parked just a block away in
the 400 block of 24th were
punctured.
Cummins estimated
it would cost $270 to replace
his tire, which was
on a blue Ford Expedition
van. Detective Lt. Ron
McLemore said the tire
was the rear one on the
driver’s side and had two
small cuts in it.
Detective Capt. Mike
Murley on Wednesday said
police had three suspects
in the outbreak of tire
Three of four revenue categories up for state
Oklahoma kicked off
fiscal 2013 with positive
revenue growth in July,
as three of the four major
revenue sources showed
substantial gains, state
Finance Secretary Preston
L. Doerflinger said.
“Weakness in energy
prices, plus rebates, led
to a reduction in the
rate of growth in total
collections, but we made
up for that in other areas
as consumer confidence
remained high,”
Doerflinger said. “That
helped total receipts to
beat the official estimate
by more than 5 percent.”
(Contintued from P. 1)
but he said that “space
is not an issue” for prekindergarten,
Sister Rosario Martinez
is coming here from
Oklahoma City. She is
in her seventh year as
a nun and is a former
director of Hispanic ministries
for the Oklahoma
City Archdiocese.
In fact, the main ministry
of the three sisters will
be local Hispanic families
and adults.
For the first two or
three months, the nuns
will be learning more
about the local community.
They may eventually
branch out into other communities
and ministries.
Father Arnold provided
further information about
the sisters and their order.
“The sisters have consecrated
their lives to the
service of God. They own
nothing personally but
share all material things
in common.
“They will not marry, as
they have given themselves
as brides of Christ to serve
his church. They make a
promise of obedience to
their superior and to the
teaching authority of the
church to ‘go into all nations’
and serve wherever
they are asked.
“Their first job is to
pray. As they pray morning,
midday, evening and
night prayer each day, they
will intercede for the needs
of the church, the world,
our local community, the
sick, poor and dying.
“Secondly, they will
educate. Since all three
sisters are bilingual,
they will minister to
both Spanish and English
speaking cultures.
They will teach religious
education, sacramental
preparation, scripture
studies, retreats and
help with local community
events.
“They will benefit the
community of Clinton
and surrounding areas
by helping the Hispanic
community to integrate,
participate and contribute
more fully into society.
“Hispanics have a
strong love of family and
hard work ethic — ideals
that we as Catholics consider
to be very American.”
Escorting the three
nuns to Clinton were
Maria Isabelle Torrez,
senior provincial superior;
and Neomi Lara,
administrator. Both are
from Houston.
The nuns all agreed
that the growing church
here, which recently underwent
a major expansion,
and the large Hispanic
congregation played
roles in the assignment of
the sisters to Clinton.
The sisters’ official habit
is brown in color, but
they may also wear white.
THREE SISTERS FROM THE MISSIONARY CARMELITES
OF SAINT TERESA have arrived in Clinton to serve in ministry
at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, accompanied by two other nuns from
their order. The nuns were greeted by the local parishioners at a meal
Wednesday. They are, seated from left, Maria Gabriela Torres, Maria
Tovar and Rosario Martinez. Flanking church priest Father Rex Arnold
P. 4, Clinton (Okla.), Daily News, Saturday, August 18, 2012
Opinion
For years we have been proud of the recognition Clinton receives for
having one of the premier football programs in the country. Now in addition
to that, people are also looking at our Clinton Public Schools as
a true leader in technology and education.
The latest academic advancement is the use of the iPad as a mainstream
teaching tool. This year every fifth and sixth grade student
at Washington Elementary School will have one of these cutting edge
computers for their own use.
And that is just the start. The goal is by the time those students reach
high school, every pupil in the Clinton school system will have an iPad
for their own use.
It is easy to forget that many school systems only offer mainstream
classes in a one-size-fits-all approach to learning − but not in Clinton.
Clinton schools have long been innovative leaders in education. Things
like advanced placement and gifted and talented classes have been a part
of the curriculum for decades. Now you can even take college courses
while attending Clinton High School.
And the programs offered here are not just for the straight “A” students.
There is just as strong a commitment to help the special needs
and “B,” “C,” and “D” students gain knowledge.
“Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we
practice to deceive!” — Sir Walter Scott
It’s one of my all-time favorite quotes. To me,
it has so many layers of meaning that one could
contemplate it for a long time and not divine all of
its richness. It came to mind when I first thought
of this topic.
I’m a big defender of the English language, perhaps
not on a par with many grammar teachers
I’ve known over
It’s a
thought
By Steve Belcher
the years, but I
still like to do
my bit occasionally
(really, it’s
sad it even needs
defending). And
I came up with
a stunner of a
reason for not just studying English and its use
but embracing it as if it was essential, because it
is, especially now.
I’ve become acquainted in the last few days, actually
over the past many years, with all of the myriad
ways we deceive each other. And we don’t do it just
as a means of lying to our fellow man. Many folks
do it as a part of their workaday jobs. It’s how they
make a living, and it’s perfectly legal.
And I tend to suspect one of the best ways we
have of defending ourselves against this deluge of
verbal gray areas is to know English inside and out
and its accompanying skills of vocabulary, reading
and oratory.
The other day I bought a microwave oven as a
replacement for one that went caput. There were
several colorful boxes that greeted me on the store
shelves. I had only a few minutes to buy said appliance
on my lunch hour from work. In the case of
this particular item, the box it came in was covered
with so many foreign languages that I had a hard
time finding something I could read.
When I finally did, it informed me the appliance
was stainless steel. I really didn’t have that as a
priority among my harried considerations. Really,
I should have given its power rating more consideration,
if anything. I just wanted a small, inexpensive
microwave that would do the job of cooking fast.
But I bought the “stainless steel” appliance anyway.
Imagine my amusement when I got the item home
and unpacked it that evening, only to find that the
stainless steel consisted of two strips less than two
inches wide across the top and bottom of the front.
The rest of the appliance was painted black. To me,
calling the appliance stainless steel was a verbal
gray area, but I’m sure it probably sold a few units.
Rocking along further with this, I’m often rewarded
when I laboriously read down into the
myriad paperwork that comes with just about
everything these days. Reading is an exercise in
patience. People tend to bury the really important,
nitty-gritty stuff down deep in their prize literature.
Sure enough, toward the back of a car manual I
unearthed some surprising information having to
do with the computers autos are festooned with
these days and how not only car dealers but also
law enforcement can extract all kinds of information
off of those computers about everything the owner
does from how fast he goes and how judiciously he
uses the brakes to even what choices he makes on
his radio and his seating adjustments — talk about
“Big Brother” watching everything we do.
We’re in a political season right now, and if a
person wants to see verbal obtuseness in action on
an Olympic level, this is certainly the time. Folks
need to listen hard and read even harder. Casting
those votes is a privilege and a responsibility. Part
of that responsibility is not just being informed,
but being able to see around all of the intentional
obscurity and hyperbole. With apologies to Oklahoma’s
favorite son, Will Rogers, let me just say
I never met a poll I really trusted, and I for sure
never saw one I was willing to take at face value.
Clinton Daily News Editorial
Clinton schools lead the way
People tend to bury
important things
Letters to
the editor
Dear Editor,
I happened to be out of the state during the
week of the forum for the mayoral candidates.
One of the things that I gleaned from your coverage
was that of city-supplied health insurance
for members of the city council and mayor. I applaud
Jason Hulin and Don Rodolph for removing
themselves from that insurance as of January
2013. I applaud the council for also removing
the mayor from that insurance beginning at the
same time.
My question is why should we continue to provide
insurance to the other two council members?
If they are Medicare eligible, why should we, as
taxpayers (and also a growing elderly population
of taxpayers) of Clinton provide this “benefit.”
Most of us elderly people pay for Medicare
Supplement and Medicare Part D (prescription
coverage) out of “our” pockets, making a considerable
dent in our income. Why would it be
different for a council member?
I call on Phyllis Smith and Bob Marcy to voluntarily
remove themselves and save the city the
cost of the premiums. The last time I inquired
about the cost was when Grayson Bottom was
city manager. If my memory serves me right,
it was between $4,200 and $6,000 per council
member per year.
Sincerely,
Bobby Hoffman
We should all be pleased that we have a board of education, administrators
and teachers in our school system that are willing to
look for, and then take on the challenge of, implementing new ways
to better educate students.
And you, the people, also deserve a lot of credit. Because you were
recently willing to approve the largest school bond issue in the history
of the school, we not only got the bricks and mortar, we also got facilities
that are ready to bring the latest technology into the classroom.
Clinton Schools are truly pioneers in introducing this new iPad
technology. We are proud our school board and administration have
the courage to be on the cutting edges of learning even though it
would have been much easier to sit on the sideline and watch others
move ahead while our students watched.
In Clinton we are showing the rest of the world that we can have
both a great athletic program and a first-class education so no student
in Clinton is sidelined.
When you have the support of the community, quality administrators,
and some of the best teachers anywhere along with a board of education
made up of visionaries that all want our children to have the best
education available anywhere, the future looks very bright for Clinton.
Harry Reid taking
politics to a new low
By Donald Lambro
Presidential campaigns can get down-and-dirty
at times, but Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is
pushing this year’s contest to an even dirtier level.
That’s saying a lot, because the Nevada Democrat
has a reputation for being one of the dirtiest politicians
in the sleaze-slinging business.
In an interview with The Huffington Post, Reid
charged that an unnamed investor at Bain Capital,
the business investment company Mitt Romney
founded, told him that Romney hadn’t paid any federal
taxes for at least a decade.
“He didn’t pay taxes for 10 years,” Reid stated
flatly. “Now, do I know that’s true? Well, I’m not
certain.”
The incendiary charge, without an iota of proof
to back it up, was bad enough, but he repeated it on
the Senate floor, where lawmakers can make all the
false accusations they want and are constitutionally
protected from libel law.
Reid, apparently, believes he can make any claim
he wants about Romney and get away with it. In this
case, he was doing the dirty work in the midst of a
hard-fought campaign in which President Obama
is in a dead heat with his well-funded Republican
rival and could end up on the ash heap of failed,
one-term presidents.
Reid didn’t just toss the charge out there and
leave it at that. No, he rubbed it in as if it were
gospel truth. He had it on good authority, he said,
though he isn’t saying who that person is − if, in
fact, anyone really told him this.
“I mean, you do pretty well if you don’t pay taxes
for 10 years when you’re making millions and millions
of dollars,” Reid said in the interview.
Later, he felt the need to elaborate further on
what The Washington Post described as “Mr. Reid’s
unseemly drive-by” attack, saying that “a number
of people tell me that.”
This is the worst kind of smear politics possible,
making unsubstantiated accusations against the political
leader of the opposing party, charging that he
was a tax dodger.
Reid has shamelessly produced no evidence to
support his charges. He knows the way the game is
played. All you have to do is hurl an outrageous accusation
against Obama’s opponent, knowing that there
are people out there who will believe it.
“If the senator has any proof, he owes it to Mr.
Romney, the presumptive Republican presidential
nominee, to put it on the record, now,” the Post said
in a blistering editorial Wednesday.
“Otherwise, Mr. Reid ought to pause and reflect on
the record of another senator who once claimed to have
a list of communists and spies at the State Department
− and could not substantiate it. Mr. Reid’s smear
tactics are not unlike those of Joseph McCarthy and
deserve equal condemnation,” the Post said.
Reid’s charges come on the heels of the Obama campaign’s
repeated attacks on Romney’s decision not to
release any further tax records beyond the 2010 and
2011 figures he has thus far made public.
Obama’s attack squad suggests that Romney must
be hiding something in his previous tax filings, even
though he replied this week, “I have paid taxes every
year, and a lot of taxes, so Harry is wrong.”
Much, if not most, of the taxes Romney has paid
since he left his former firm have been on capital gains
income from investments. Those gains are taxed at
a 15-percent rate, as provided for in the federal tax
code, because Congress in its infinite wisdom wants
to encourage further investment in the U.S. economy.
That rate also helps ordinary older Americans
who live off their capital gains and dividends in their
retirement years.
Romney knows the only reason Obama and the
Democrats want him to disclose all of his tax returns
over the past 10 years is that they can use that information
to play their class-warfare game, which they’re
very good at, and thus hope to distract voters from
the issues that matter: four years of weak economic
growth, 42 straight months of high unemployment, and
an unbroken line of trillion dollar-plus budget deficits
that have plunged our country into unprecedented debt.

Sunday, Aug. 19, 2012
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)
— You’re likely to come up
with an idea for devising
a spin-off from one of your
greatest sources of earning.
It may require an imaginative
twist, but it’s well
within your scope.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept.
22) — You’ll be at your best
in a situation where you
have to juggle two endeavors
simultaneously. You’ll
understand how these projects
are interrelated, which
will give you the advantage.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct.
23) — If you’re smart, you
won’t discuss with others
your plans to further a
personal ambition. This includes
even people you hope
will eventually participate.
SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov.
22) — Your pals will have a
stronger than usual influence
on your outlook and
attitude. Take cues from
friends who are upbeat.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov.
of personal satisfaction
will be gained from a challenge
to overcome.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-
Jan. 19) — Usually, it’s not
a good idea to offer advice
to just anyone. However,
dire need of some helpful
suggestions, speak up.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-
Feb. 19) — When in a partnership
arrangement, you
should let your cohort do
choose. Don’t be indecisive
— instead be conclusive.
ARIES (March 21-April
instead of merely talking.
No one is going to follow
your ideas or suggestions
unless you first demonstrate
how well they work.
TAURUS (April 20-May
20) — Make it a point to set
some time aside for a little
fun. A well-deserved break
will serve as a marvelous
release from any tensions.
GEMINI (May 21-June
20) — Prioritize your goals
and complete the most important
one first. Only by
carefully delegating your
time and effort can you
hope to get anything done.
CANCER (June 21-July
22) — Being extremely
observant at present, there
isn’t much that is likely
to escape your attention.
You’ll not only grasp the
essence of ideas quickly, but
you’ll be equally as eager to
impart what you learn.
Drought cost-share funds available
Oklahoma farmers and
ranchers looking for help
to cope with drought conditions
now have additional
options available to them
thanks to the announcement
this past week by
Gov. Mary Fallin that $1.4
million will be made available
through the statewide
Conservation Cost-Share
Program administered by
the Oklahoma Conservation
Commission.
Joe Parker, president of
the Oklahoma Association
of Conservation Districts
(OACD), lauded the timing
of the announcement.
“The conservation districts
of Oklahoma are glad
to see these funds available
to help producers throughout
the state,” Parker said.
“The weight of this drought
continues to press down
on Oklahoma Agriculture.
Any help we can provide in
this time of need should be
priority one.”
On Monday, Aug. 13,
the commission took action
to make monies available
for additional conservation
work through the statewide
cost-share program.
This move by the commission
makes these funds
available to agriculture producers
attempting to cope
with the record drought by
installing various conservation
practices including
pond construction, well
drilling, connection of pasture
tap hydrants to water
systems and grass plantings
in pastures damaged
by the drought.
These funds can also be
utilized to control invasive
species like the Eastern
Red Cedar, a move that can
also help reduce fuel loads
for wildfires.
According to OACD executive
director Clay Pope,
producers should contact
their local conservation
district to check on the
availability of funding in
their area.
“Our local district
boards will be prioritizing
the use of these funds
and working to make
dollars available to producers
as quickly as pos-
West Nile worsening
Gov. Mary Fallin is joining with state and local public
health officials to raise awareness of West Nile virus and
the steps Oklahomans should take to protect themselves
from the mosquito-borne illness.
“West Nile virus is a serious disease that can be
life-altering or even fatal,” said Fallin. “Many of our
fellow Oklahomans are now hospitalized with West
Nile virus. Even though we are early into the season,
at least 61 cases and three deaths have been reported
in Oklahoma. The best way to prevent West Nile virus
is to avoid mosquito bites.”
Fallin urged Oklahomans to “fight the bite” by taking
personal precautions to reduce the risk of mosquito bites,
including using insect repellent when going outdoors, installing
or repairing screens on windows and doors, and
emptying standing water from items outside the home
like buckets, cans, flower pots, and tires so mosquitoes
have no place to breed.
Bird baths and outdoor pet water bowls should be
emptied and refilled daily and leaves and debris should
be cleaned from gutters to ensure they are not clogged.
“This disease has hit Oklahomans hard this year and
unfortunately, those who seem to be most at risk are older
citizens. If you know persons who might be at particular
risk, such as parents or grandparents over age 50, please
check with them to make certain they are taking precautions,”
Fallin said.
“In addition, anyone spending significant time outdoors
must also make certain to use insect repellent
and carry it with them for reapplication if necessary.
Oklahomans are or will soon be gearing up for night-time
outdoor activities like high school football games, athletic
practices, lakeside camping, gardening and evening jogs.
Farmers and those who work outside are particularly susceptible
to the disease. Everyone in these circumstances
must be sure to take proper precautions.”
Fallin urged those who believe they have contracted
West Nile to seek immediate medical attention.
“Symptoms appear within three to 15 days after
exposure and generally appear flu-like, with headaches,
muscle weakness, fever and nausea all being common.
Anyone who suspects they have West Nile virus should
immediately contact a doctor.”
West Nile virus is a seasonal epidemic that begins in
late summer and continues into the fall. Case activity
spikes every three to four years depending on conditions
that encourage a higher number of infected mosquitoes.
Healthy, active adults who are 50 and older have the
highest risk of illness, including neuroinvasive disease,
which causes inflammation of the brain and spinal cord.
The age range of cases reported among Oklahomans
this year is from 12 to 90 years old. The Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention reports 32 states have
West Nile cases.
For more information on West Nile virus, visit the
Oklahoma State Department of Health’s website at www.
sible,” Pope said.
“We would encourage
anyone interested in these
funds to visit with their
local conservation district
4x14.5
office and their local board
members. We are glad
these resources are available,
and we want to do all
we can to help.”
Lady Reds romp for first victory
By SEAN STEPHENS
Clinton’s softball team managed to break into the win column in grand fashion
Thursday with an 11-0 win over Geary in the first round of the I-40 Classic held
at the CHS Ballpark.
The Lady Reds (1-5) fell 10-0 to Tecumseh later in the day, but had a little
time to savor the first victory of the season.
“We came out and got after them,” said coach Kelly Gaunt about the win over
Geary. “Almost everybody
got a chance to play and
it was good for us to get
a win.”
Devyn Cobb picked up
the win in the pitcher’s
circle for the Lady Reds.
In four innings of work
she struck out four batters,
gave up only two
hits, issued no walks and
had a pair of 1-2-3 innings.
“She threw strikes and
that’s a big key for us,”
Gaunt said. “We can’t afford
to give up walks and
extra bases. We can’t beat
anybody if we do too much
of that.”
The Lady Reds started
the game as the visiting
team and put up five runs
in the first inning and
would score another six
in the second before doing
some mass substitution in
the third and fourth.
“We had a chance to
play a lot of people and
that’s always good for a
young team,” Gaunt said.
Offensively Clinton
collected several hits on
the afternoon.
Miranda Cardenas
drove in three runs with
an RBI-double and a tworun
single.
Ashlynn Smith also
knocked in three runs
with an RBI-single and a
two-run single.
Side effects of beta blockers can be controlled
DEAR DOCTOR K: My
doctor wants me to take a
beta blocker for my high
blood pressure. Can you
tell me about these drugs?
DEAR READER: Beta
blockers are one of the
most important classes
of drugs invented in the
past half-century. In fact,
they are so important that
their inventor, Sir James
Black, was honored with
the Nobel Prize. They have
saved many lives -- but that
doesn’t mean they are for
everyone, or without possible
side effects.
Beta blockers are primarily
used to control high
blood pressure (hypertension)
and abnormal heart
rhythms. They are also
used to prevent further
heart problems in patients
who have had heart attacks
or who have heart failure.
It’s not uncommon for a
person to have hyperten-
Girl hears night noises from parents room
DEAR ABBY: One
night I woke up to my
cat scratching at my bedroom
door to be let in.
When I got up
and opened the
door, I heard my
parents making
love. They were
so loud it grossed
me out, because
my little sister is
10 and we share
a room right next
to theirs. She still
doesn’t know about
this kind of stuff.
I want to tell them they
don’t need to be doing
that, because what if she
got scared and woke up
and tried to go in there?
What should I do — tell
them to go to a motel?
— GROSSED OUT IN
sion and abnormal heart
rhythms along with heart
attacks or heart failure in
the past. So some people
get multiple simultaneous
benefits from beta blockers.
Beta blockers lower
blood pressure primarily
by slowing the rate
and the force with which
the heart pumps. They
do this by blocking the
hormones norepinephrine
and epinephrine. Both
hormones can accelerate
your heart rate. After being
used for a long time,
beta blockers also tend to
relax blood vessels.
There are three types
of beta blockers. Some are
longer-acting; some enter
the brain more easily; and
some are called cardioselective
and affect primarily
the heart, not the lungs.
The type of beta blocker
your doctor prescribes will
depend on your particular
parents to go to a motel.
If the cat hadn’t wakened
you and you hadn’t opened
your bedroom door, you
wouldn’t have
heard a thing.
Be glad that you
have parents who
love each other
and that you
didn’t overhear
them fighting.
If your sister
ever wakes up
and gets scared,
she should know
she can wake you up.
P.S. At age 10, your
sister shouldn’t be completely
in the dark about
the facts of life. And the
person who should be
talking to her about them
is her mother.
DEAR ABBY: I have
an aunt (by marriage)
who I think may be suffering
from mental is-
medical needs. (I have a list
of the different types of beta
blockers on my website.)
Since you’re new to
beta blockers, let your doctor
know if you think you
may be having any side
effects. Some people taking
beta blockers complain of
fatigue. Lightheadedness
from a drop in blood pressure
is also a risk. Erectile
dysfunction is another possible
side effect.
Beta blockers can sometimes
cause wheezing, particularly
in people with
asthma. In people with
diabetes on blood sugarlowering
medicines, being
on a beta blocker can sometimes
mask the symptoms
of low blood sugar.
These side effects often
can go away with adjustments
to the dose of the
beta blocker or switching to
another type. For example,
if you have wheezing, you
sues. All of a sudden,
she is calling members
of our family and telling
them that “so-and-so” (it
varies) is talking about
them behind their backs.
Of course, none of it is
true, but it has caused a
huge rift in our family.
Family members have
had big arguments over
these calls.
The aunt is in her
mid-50s and has always
been quiet and sweet to
everyone, so of course
when someone gets a call,
the person tends to believe
her. This is tearing
our family to pieces, and
no one knows for sure if
she’s having problems or
if she is telling the truth.
HELP! My cousins are
no longer speaking to one
another or me. I’m not
close to her, but I have
fallen prey to her phone
calls to others. What
can be switched to a beta
blocker that affects mainly
the heart but not the lungs.
We have more information
on drugs that lower
high blood pressure in our
Special Health Report,
“Hypertension.” (Learn
more about this report at
AskDoctorK.com, or call
877-649-9457 toll-free to
order it.)
Even if you experience
side effects, do not
stop taking beta blockers
without first checking
with your doctor. Suddenly
stopping them might cause
an unsafe rise in blood
pressure or a worsening
of angina.
Beta blockers were
first introduced at about
the time I started my
medical practice. I’m glad
I have had these medicines
available to help my
patients throughout my
whole career.
should I do? — SLAN-
DERED IN INDIANA
DEAR SLANDERED:
A sudden change in personality
can indeed be
a sign of mental illness
or a physical problem.
Those family members
who ARE still speaking
to one another should approach
the uncle to whom
the woman is married
and express the family’s
concerns. She may need
a physical and neurological
fences.) How sad.
Transportation Tiger III
Grant funding for improvements
to the Farmrail
railroad line through
that area to haul crude
oil, the Sayre Record reported
Wednesday.
The grant, which had
$511 million available with
Putnam meal
to be Sunday
Putnam Senior Center
will be hosting its
Third Sunday Dinner
this Sunday. The serving
line will open at
11:30 a.m.
The suggested donation
is $6 and includes a
drink and dessert. The
north edge of Putnam,
848 project applications
from 48 states. Sayre
was the only community in
Oklahoma to win a grant.
The total Sayre project
cost is set at $8,456,580.
It will upgrade 49 miles
of state-owned rail line
in the Anadarko Basin to
more efficiently and safely
transport oil and gas.
There are few viable
options for transporting
the oil and gas from this region,
Shepherd fete set
The 26th Shepherd
Family Reunion is
scheduled for noon Saturday,
Aug. 26, at the
Arapaho-Butler School
Cafeteria.
Doors will open
around 10 a.m.
This will be a catered
meal, and in order to get
a headcount, those planning
to attend are asked
to call Sandy Shepherd
at (580) 323-0563.
the current rail line cannot
keep up with demand.
The project will rehabilitate
the track to FRA
Class 2 standards, which
allow for speeds up to
25 miles per hour with
fewer restrictions on the
number of cars per train.
The project addresses
national and regional
needs by reducing the
transportation costs of
domestically-produced
crude oil and providing
safe and efficient shipment
to refineries.
U.S. Congressman
Frank Lucas was in
Sayre Monday to visit
with Sayre officials about
the grant.
“The Tiger III grant
was approved in December.
Congressman
Lucas was very helpful
in making this happen.
Construction will start
in about 30 days. We’re
excited. The last time
crude oil was moved out
by rail here was in 1932.
Now, we’re shipping it
every day,” said Farmrail
