Structure and Management<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Australian</strong> Research Council <strong>Nanotechnology</strong> <strong>Network</strong> is managed by a Management<br />

Committee which met 5 times during <strong>2007</strong>. <strong>The</strong> first Board meeting for <strong>2007</strong> was held at the<br />

Centre for Nanostructured Electromaterials, Intelligent Polymer Research Institute at the<br />

University of Wollongong on the 22nd of February <strong>2007</strong>. Other meetings held during <strong>2007</strong> were<br />

in May at the Research School of Physical Sciences and Engineering, <strong>Australian</strong> National<br />

University, in July at the Melbourne Convention Centre, in September at the ARC Centre for<br />

Functional Nanomaterials, the University of Queensland, and at the <strong>Australian</strong> National<br />

University in December.<br />

This management board represents the wider membership and is chaired by an independent<br />

chair. <strong>The</strong> committee determines the priorities for each activity and allocates the budget for the<br />

network. A <strong>Network</strong> Manager manages the day to day administrative tasks under the Guidance<br />

of the <strong>Network</strong> Convenor.<br />

Management Committee Chair<br />

<strong>The</strong> duties of the Chair are to chair Management committee meetings, provide advice to the<br />

<strong>Network</strong>, confirm meeting minutes for circulation to Management committee members,<br />

represent the network at important meetings and provide general guidance to the network<br />

management.<br />

Convenor<br />

<strong>The</strong> convenor has overall responsibility for the <strong>Network</strong> operations and for meeting ARC<br />

requirements and guidelines. Represent the network at key <strong>Nanotechnology</strong> meetings in<br />

Australia and key International network meetings. Supervise <strong>Network</strong> staff and provide overall<br />

direction to the network activities.<br />

Management Committee Members<br />

<strong>The</strong> management committee members participate in committee meetings. <strong>The</strong>y serve on the<br />

Working Group sub committees, represent the <strong>Network</strong> and publicise network activities,<br />

organise and actively participate in the management of network activities, act as ambassadors for<br />

the <strong>Network</strong> and provide advice to the network members about network programs.<br />

Working Groups<br />

Committee members form into working groups that assess funding applications and other issues<br />

prior to the matter going to the full Management committee for voting.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are four working groups and their areas comprise<br />

Events Working Group – evaluates all applications for sponsorship funding for Conferences,<br />

Workshops, Summer and Winter Schools and Short Courses.<br />

Visits Working Group – evaluates all applications for Short and Long Term Visits and Overseas<br />

Travel Fellowships.<br />

Outreach Working Group – evaluates outreach proposals such as Public Lectures,<br />

Distinguished Lecturers visits, outreach and Webpage.<br />

Education Working Group – evaluates applications for student, ECR and Entrepreneur Forums<br />

and educational activities.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Convenor fills in if a working group member is unavailable or is one of the applicants (when<br />

there is a conflict of interest).<br />
