Description – <strong>Delphi</strong>’s Multec medium duty<br />

<strong>diesel</strong> <strong>com</strong>mon <strong>rail</strong> (MDCR) <strong>is</strong> a modular <strong>diesel</strong> fuel<br />

<strong>in</strong>jection system, with models capable of 1800 bar<br />

system pressure. It uses a solenoid <strong>in</strong>jector design<br />

to optimize fuel rate, spray shape, <strong>an</strong>d accuracy. The<br />

highly <strong>in</strong>novative Multec <strong>com</strong>mon <strong>rail</strong> system<br />

provides small <strong>in</strong>jection qu<strong>an</strong>tities <strong>in</strong> a small <strong>in</strong>jector<br />

package, <strong>an</strong>d along with closed-loop strategies,<br />

delivers prec<strong>is</strong>e fuel qu<strong>an</strong>tities over the life of the<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>e. That helps result <strong>in</strong> cost-effective, robust<br />

The <strong>Delphi</strong> Multec MDCR actually helps customers<br />

Diesel Common Rail<br />

In the Multec MDCR system, the pressure level of<br />

the <strong>rail</strong> <strong>is</strong> electronically regulated by a <strong>com</strong>b<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

of <strong>in</strong>let meter<strong>in</strong>g to the high-pressure pump <strong>an</strong>d fuel<br />

d<strong>is</strong>charge by bleed<strong>in</strong>g the pressure off quickly via the<br />

<strong>in</strong>jector solenoid return. Also, as <strong>an</strong> option, <strong>Delphi</strong><br />

offers a <strong>rail</strong>-mounted actuator for d<strong>is</strong>charge of highpressure<br />

fuel. The <strong>rail</strong> pressure operates <strong>in</strong>dependently<br />

of eng<strong>in</strong>e speed or load, so that high <strong>in</strong>jection pressure<br />

c<strong>an</strong> be produced at low speeds if required. A series<br />

of <strong>in</strong>jectors <strong>is</strong> connected to the <strong>rail</strong>, <strong>an</strong>d each <strong>is</strong><br />

opened <strong>an</strong>d closed by a solenoid driven by the electronic<br />

control unit (ECU). <strong>Delphi</strong> has further enh<strong>an</strong>ced<br />

the multi-<strong>in</strong>jection capability of its previous system<br />

by <strong>in</strong>troduc<strong>in</strong>g a hydraulically optimized <strong>rail</strong>, which <strong>in</strong><br />

Product Design – The <strong>Delphi</strong> Multec MDCR <strong>is</strong><br />

Typical Applications – The Multec MDCR<br />

system has been developed to meet the dem<strong>an</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g<br />

requirements for medium-duty truck <strong>an</strong>d off-highway<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>e applications. Because of the <strong>com</strong>pact,<br />

modular design of the MDCR system, it c<strong>an</strong> be<br />

applied to a wide r<strong>an</strong>ge of eng<strong>in</strong>e applications from<br />

three to eight cyl<strong>in</strong>ders.<br />

Perform<strong>an</strong>ce Adv<strong>an</strong>tages – The <strong>Delphi</strong><br />

Multec MDCR offers signific<strong>an</strong>t simplification of<br />

fuel <strong>an</strong>d control systems. The <strong>in</strong>jectors operate at a<br />

battery voltage (12 V) with low energy requirements,<br />

allow<strong>in</strong>g a less <strong>com</strong>plex, more cost-effective electronics<br />

design. In addition, the <strong>in</strong>jectors perform the pressure<br />

relief function <strong>in</strong> conjunction with the <strong>in</strong>let meter<strong>in</strong>g<br />

system. As <strong>an</strong> option, <strong>Delphi</strong> offers a <strong>rail</strong>-mounted<br />

actuator for d<strong>is</strong>charge of high-pressure fuel.<br />

The enh<strong>an</strong>ced perform<strong>an</strong>ce of the <strong>Delphi</strong> Multec<br />

MDCR <strong>is</strong> a result of:<br />

■ 12 V pressure-bal<strong>an</strong>ced solenoid valve: With th<strong>is</strong><br />

pressure-bal<strong>an</strong>ced valve, the force required to<br />

move the solenoid rema<strong>in</strong>s const<strong>an</strong>t regardless<br />

of the prevail<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>jection pressure. Th<strong>is</strong> helps<br />

elim<strong>in</strong>ate the space <strong>an</strong>d cost of larger solenoid<br />

valves or retention spr<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

■ Accelerometer pilot control (APC): In order to<br />

help keep the no<strong>is</strong>e <strong>an</strong>d em<strong>is</strong>sions with<strong>in</strong> small<br />

toler<strong>an</strong>ces dur<strong>in</strong>g eng<strong>in</strong>e life, the APC technique<br />

<strong>is</strong> used on all Multec MDCR systems. In th<strong>is</strong><br />

closed-loop system, <strong>an</strong> accelerometer attached<br />

to the eng<strong>in</strong>e block “l<strong>is</strong>tens” to the <strong>com</strong>bustion,<br />

allow<strong>in</strong>g the eng<strong>in</strong>e m<strong>an</strong>agement system to<br />

automatically optimize its calibrations as conditions<br />

ch<strong>an</strong>ge. The result helps enable a cons<strong>is</strong>tently<br />

cle<strong>an</strong>, quiet, <strong>an</strong>d smooth-runn<strong>in</strong>g eng<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

■ Individual <strong>in</strong>jector characterization: Th<strong>is</strong> system<br />

records prec<strong>is</strong>e <strong>in</strong>dividual <strong>in</strong>jector character<strong>is</strong>tics<br />

on the <strong>in</strong>jector body us<strong>in</strong>g a bar code label.<br />

When the eng<strong>in</strong>e <strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong>stalled, th<strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>is</strong><br />

read optically <strong>an</strong>d programmed <strong>in</strong> the ECU to<br />

optimize perform<strong>an</strong>ce. Th<strong>is</strong> feature provides<br />

superb accuracy for each <strong>in</strong>jector while simult<strong>an</strong>eously<br />

help<strong>in</strong>g reduce m<strong>an</strong>ufactur<strong>in</strong>g costs <strong>an</strong>d<br />

improv<strong>in</strong>g quality s<strong>in</strong>ce the <strong>in</strong>jectors do not need<br />

to be repaired or adjusted to achieve the desired<br />

accuracy.<br />

■ Compact design: The <strong>com</strong>pact design of the<br />

<strong>in</strong>jector outl<strong>in</strong>e enables the Multec MDCR<br />

system to be used on two or four valves-percyl<strong>in</strong>der<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>es.<br />

■ Modular system: With one electronically driven<br />

<strong>in</strong>jector per eng<strong>in</strong>e cyl<strong>in</strong>der, the system <strong>is</strong><br />

modular <strong>an</strong>d c<strong>an</strong> be used on three- to eightcyl<strong>in</strong>der<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>es.<br />

■ Low drive torque: Low peak drive torques help<br />

enable the design of simplified <strong>an</strong>d flexible drive<br />

arr<strong>an</strong>gements.<br />

■ Independent <strong>in</strong>jection pressure: The <strong>in</strong>jection<br />

pressure <strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong>dependent of the eng<strong>in</strong>e speed<br />

<strong>an</strong>d load, enabl<strong>in</strong>g high pressures at low speed<br />

if required.<br />

■ Multiple <strong>in</strong>jections per fir<strong>in</strong>g cycle: Injection<br />

sequences that <strong>in</strong>clude pre, ma<strong>in</strong>, <strong>an</strong>d post<br />

<strong>in</strong>jections c<strong>an</strong> be utilized to help reduce<br />

em<strong>is</strong>sions, enabl<strong>in</strong>g the system to help meet<br />

the str<strong>in</strong>gent em<strong>is</strong>sion levels required by Euro IV<br />

<strong>an</strong>d US04 leg<strong>is</strong>lation <strong>an</strong>d beyond. The <strong>in</strong>clusion<br />

of pilot <strong>in</strong>jection also results <strong>in</strong> signific<strong>an</strong>t<br />

reduction <strong>in</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>e no<strong>is</strong>e.<br />

■ Full electronic control: Multec MDCR offers all<br />

the benefits of full electronic control fuel meter<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>an</strong>d tim<strong>in</strong>g, as well as the option to <strong>in</strong>terface<br />

with other vehicle functions. The ECU has the<br />

ability to convert 24 V to 12 V to drive the <strong>Delphi</strong><br />

fuel <strong>in</strong>jection system.<br />
