Now you may share the view that commoditization is a<br />

positive factor. But, I believe that if you want your<br />

products to find profitable world markets, you must be<br />

sensitive to the profit concerns commoditization is<br />

causing your world computer and communications<br />

customers.<br />

I expect that someday we will see the products of<br />

computer and communications companies counted among<br />

what is today called the consumer electronics' industry.<br />

What, then, does the computer and communications vendor,<br />

accustomed to serving industrial markets, do to survive<br />

and prosper in consumer markets?<br />

I hope you won't be offended by my simple, low-tech, even<br />

mundane appraisal.<br />

But my appraisal includes the following: The key<br />

differentiating attributes that winning vendors will build<br />

into their products in the future will spring from a new<br />

alliance between end users of your products and your<br />

engineers. This alliance must be real, enduring, and<br />

intimate. It must be blessed and nurtured from the Chief<br />
