Acknowledgements
I wish to offer sincere thanks to Dr Hamish Bremner for his guidance, counsel,
and humour in the content and structure of this thesis. I also thank Professor
Simon Milne for his supervision of the work.
My gratitude goes to all those who participated in the research. To the
accommodation hosts – I thank all for their time, and for giving me tremendous
insights into their daily lives and the challenges they face as small business
owners. To the older travellers – I must thank them particularly for reminding
me of the joy in spontaneous travel.
Most of all, my biggest thanks goes to Douglas Walker for his constant support,
unfailing belief in my abilities, and those early morning cups of coffee.
I acknowledge the support of the AUT Ethics Committee in approving
application number 07/144 on 05 October 2007.
