leiandrae varietate habita sed ab ea foholis simul magis numerosis<br />

(foUorum majorum 12-20, nee 6-11-jugis) oblongis (nee ovato-elli<strong>pt</strong>i-<br />

cis) et minoribus (majoribus plerumque 2.7-4.5 x 0.9-1.3, nee<br />

5_7 X 1.4-2.5 cm), legumine tereti (nee corrugato) necnon ecologia<br />

(nostra silvis non-inundabilibus incola) certe specifice separanda.—<br />

Holotypus infra sub var. cowanii indicatur.<br />

Potenrially tall forest trees attaining 40 m with basally dilated trunk up to 3 dm<br />

diam at breast-height, flowering first when smaller, the annorinous branchlets<br />

glabrate hvid or fuscous, bluntly angulate by blackish ribs descending from each<br />

If-scar, the hornorinous branchlets together with If-stalks, dorsal face of lfts and<br />

aU axes of inflorescence densely pUosulous with either crisply incurved or<br />

straighter ascending, commonly lutescent hairs up to 0.1-0.3(-0.5) mm, the ex­<br />

panding lvs at first yeUow-tomentulose, red in flush, at maturity bicolored, the<br />

blades (dry) above brownish-olivaceous duU or moderately lustrous, finely thinly<br />

puberulent, beneath paler dull, the racemes ascending singly or paired from nodular<br />

spurs on annotinous or older branches, always weU below current fohage.<br />

Stipules caducous from the expanding If (consequently httle known), subulate<br />

or triangular-subulate 0.5-2 mm, absent from adult foUage.<br />

Adult lvs (ll-)14-27(-<strong>35</strong>) cm; petiole including livid pulvinus 10-27(-32) mm;<br />

rachis (9-)10-22(-29) cm, openly sulcate ventraUy, the sulcus interru<strong>pt</strong>ed at each<br />

pair of lfts, the longer interfoholar segments 9-14(-16) mm; pulvinules 1-1.7 mm;<br />

lfts 12-20 pairs, strongly decrescent at base of rachis, less so or not at aU so<br />

distally, the Ift-blades in outline oblong obtuse or emarginate, at inequilateral<br />

base broadly rounded to truncate or subcordate, the larger ones 2.7-<br />

4.5(-5.4) X 0.9-1.3(-1.4) cm, the margin revolute, the midrib depressed on upper<br />

and cariniform on lower face, the 11-15 pairs of rather crowded and widely diver­<br />

gent cam<strong>pt</strong>odrome secondary veins becoming prominulous on both faces, a fine<br />

tertiary and irregular but close reticular venulation becoming sharply raised at<br />

least on the ventral face, sometimes on both.<br />

Racemes subsessile 20-50-fld, the subglobose fl-buds densely racemose above<br />

the several simultaneously expanded fls, the axis including short or obscure peduncle<br />

becoming 8-16(-20) cm; bracts deltate-ovate or broadly lanceolate 2-4<br />

mm, densely pUosulous both within and without, together with the similar but<br />

shghtly smaller bracteoles deciduous either as the pedicel begins to lengthen or<br />

not later than full anthesis of the subtended fl; pedicels (8-) 10-16 mm, greatly<br />

thickened and woody in fruit; hypanthium ±1 mm, narrowly turbinate; sepals<br />

firm, densely pilosulous on both faces, obovate, obovate-suborbicular or broadly<br />

oblance-obovate, the inner onces 5.5-10 mm, aU early reflexed; petals usuaUy<br />

golden-yeUow, rarely (in Guyana) orange-red, subhomomorphic, aU obovate or<br />

ellipric-obovate beyond the short claw, enrire or minutely angulate-toothed at<br />

base of blade; filaments of 3 long abaxial stamens 10-22 mm, of 2 abaxial antepetalous<br />

ones erect 2.5-9 mm, of 3 other antepetalous ones fleshy-dilated<br />

2-6 X 0.7-1.2(-1.8) mm, of 2 sterile alternate with the last 1.3-2 mm; anthers<br />

glabrous or thinly pilosulous on back, of 3 long stamens erect 1.1-2.1 x 1-1.6<br />

mm, of the rest resupinate, those of 2 abaxial antepetalous ones 1.8-3 mm, of 3<br />

similar adaxial ones 1.4-2.3 mm, of 2 sterUe adaxial 0.4-0.7 mm diam; ovary<br />

densely short-pilosulous; style very short, the minute stigmaric cavity looking upand<br />

inward; ovules 56-80.<br />
